But the supply is very limitted.  The initial shipment will be 3,000 units, which once spread across more than 800 stores means there’ll be only 5 Apple TVs available at each store for the MSRP of $299.So get ready for a mad dash and long lines.Read Full Story

Chris Evans leads splashy Apple TV series, Defending Jacob – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

From the outside, the Barbers seem like a blessed family.

Dad Andy is a successful prosecutor, mum Laurie works with traumatised kids and son Jacob, 14, attends the local middle school in an upper-middle class Boston community where we’re told every second parent is a lawyer.

The have a tastefully furnished colonial house with a red door and a large kitchen island and the parents drive an Audi and a Range Rover – which seems a little out of the price range of a prosecutor and a charity worker, but maybe there’s family money somewhere in there.

In that time-honoured TV tradition, this all-American family’s lives are unexpectedly up-ended when a tragedy strikes. One of Jacob’s classmates is found stabbed to death in the nearby woods, and Jacob becomes the prime suspect.

As far as TV dramas go, the story is pretty standard, which means Defending Jacob, a splashy new miniseries from Apple TV+, has to bring something else to the table.

That X factor is its stars: Chris Evans and Michelle Dockery, internationally famous for their most iconic roles as Captain America and Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary Crawley. They play the impossibly beautiful suburban parents of Jacob, portrayed by Jaeden Martell, Evans’ co-star from Knives Out.

to family in turmoilSource:AP

There are also some great supporting cast with the likes of Cherry Jones, Pablo Schreiber (Orange is the New Black), Betty Gabriel (Get Out), Sakina Jaffrey (House of Cards), Leighton Meester, J.K. Simmons and Australian actor Daniel Henshall (Bloom).

Then you throw in Morten Tyldum, the Oscar-nominated director of The Imitation Game, to helm all eight episodes with a moody style, creating a suspenseful and repressive atmosphere, and you start to get something resembling prestige TV.

And it mostly works – the swirl of those shiny ingredients elevates an otherwise humdrum story.

Adapted by Mark Bomback (Outlaw King, The Wolverine) from a best-selling novel by William Landay, Defending Jacob benefits from its source material’s author, whose own experience as a prosecutor in the same Massachusetts county lends the series a level of detail of the machinery of investigation.

It’s an interesting insight into how someone so embedded within that system will be forced to use their knowledge to protect someone in their family.

The story may be propelled by the mystery of the crime, but the heart of it is the deterioration and mental anguish of this family who appeared to have it all, but as with all suburban facades, scratch beneath the surface and there’s always something else lurking.

‘Hedy Lamarr’: Gal Gadot-Led Limited Series to Premiere on Apple TV+ – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

After being in development at Showtime for more than two years, the Gal Gadot-led “Hedy Lamarr” has instead moved to Apple TV+, with the tech giant giving the project an eight episode limited series order.

The show will be executive produced by Gadot (“Wonder Woman”) who will also star, and Sarah Treem (“House of Cards”). A release date has not been determined.

Here’s the series’ synopsis, per Apple: Hailed as “the most beautiful woman in the world,” Hedy Lamarr was first exalted and iconized, then destroyed and eventually forgotten by American audiences, all the while keeping her brilliant mind active through a series of inventions, one of which became the basis for the spread spectrum technology we use today. The series will follow the incredible life-story of Hollywood glamour girl, spanning 30 years from Hedy’s daring escape from pre-war Vienna; to her meteoric rise in the Golden Age of Hollywood; to her fall and eventual disgrace at the dawn of the Cold War. An epic tale of an immigrant woman both ahead of her time and very much victim to it.

“Hedy Lamarr” had been in the works at Showtime since August 2018 but never received a series order, allowing Apple to swoop in. The series will also be executive produced by Warren Littlefield (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Katie Robbins (“The Affair”). It will also be co-produced by Lamarr veterans Adam Haggiag and Alexandra Dean, part of the team behind the 2017 “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story” documentary. Lamarr’s children, Anthony Loder and Denise Deluca, will consult on the series.

Apple is continuing to bulk up its slate of limited series for its growing streaming service, which launched last November. Apple TV+ is also gearing up to release a limited series adaption of Stephen King’s “Lisey’s Story” horror novel and “The Shrink Next Door,” based on the podcast by Wondery.

As for Gadot, she’s set to appear in DC superhero film “Wonder Woman 1984,” which is slated to hit theaters on August 14. She will also have roles in upcoming films such as “Death on the Nile” and “Red Notice,” the latter of which will also star Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds.

The New Apple TV Invigorates the Set-Top Box – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Tech Fix

The revamped Apple TV, with a redesigned remote control.Credit…Apple

  • Oct. 28, 2015

I NEVER imagined I would get hooked on reading comic books on a TV screen. That changed last week after I picked up a new Apple TV.

The new device, which is similar to a set-top box and brings video and music from the Internet to a television, now has an app store. So I downloaded Madefire, one of the first apps available for the new device. Madefire adds a twist to digital comics with sound effects, music and motion, bringing the panels to life on the big screen. Within minutes, I was bingeing on a series about Superman turning into a corrupt dictator.

Playing with apps is just one new feature of the revamped Apple TV, which will ship this week. It’s that plethora of innovations and apps that leads me to conclude that the upgraded $149 box is now the best TV streaming device you can get for your money.

You can trust me because after testing hundreds of new devices for nearly a decade in this line of work, I’m usually blasé about products. My editor was concerned that body snatchers had taken me when I said I was positive about Apple TV. But I reserve excitement for products that I think will make a difference, this being one of them.

For Apple, this type of reaction to Apple TV is important. The box, which made its debut in 2007, was long labeled a “hobby” by the company, and it accounts for a single-digit percentage of its revenue. With the new device, Apple is aiming to push hard into consumers’ living rooms, where it faces competition from players including the Microsoft Xbox and Amazon’s Fire TV device.

“This is the foundation of the future of TV,” Timothy D. Cook, Apple’s chief executive, said recently at a conference about Apple TV. “What has to happen in the TV land, it has to be brought up and modernized.”

All the extra features have now put Apple TV in a position to become a powerful apps and games console, not just a box for streaming movies and TV shows.

Even for those more basic elements, the device is better at streaming video content than less expensive products from Amazon, Roku and Google, all of which I tested over the last month. While the new Apple box has flaws, it also has a cleaner interface for finding things to watch and a niftier remote control — not to mention more compelling apps and games.

Redesigned Remote

One of the biggest changes is a redesigned remote control, which has a touch pad and a few physical buttons. It is also thicker, which is actually an improvement because the previous version was so thin that it had a tendency to vanish between couch cushions. More important, the remote includes a microphone and a button to summon Siri, Apple’s voice assistant,…

The best cord-cutting options in N.J.: Did Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus change the streaming game? – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Can you imagine a life without cable television?

For most tube junkies, this would have been a preposterous thought 10 or even five years ago. But with cable prices continuing to climb, many viewers are finding ways to watch their favorite shows and content without having to fork over hundreds of dollars to their cable provider.

The phenomenon is called cord-cutting.

Whether it’s as simple as a Netflix account or more extreme like getting an Amazon Fire Stick or Apple TV, the non-cable options run the gamut.

Are you ready to cut the cord, or should you stay connected to cable? What service is right for you, and what’s the best hardware? And how do the newest streaming services, Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus, change the equation? Here’s everything you need to know about cord-cutting and how to do it in New Jersey.

In 2008, less than 1 million American households were completely reliant on the internet for television viewing, according to Parks Associates. By 2017, that number leaped to 22.2 million.

Convergence Research Group’s “Battle for the American Couch Potato” report stated that OTT (over-the-top, aka cord-cutting services) access revenue grew by 41 percent to $11.9 billion in 2017 and that number is projected to more than double by 2020. Meanwhile, cable, satellite and Teleco TV access (not including OTT) revenue grew just one percent in 2017 to $107.6.

Now in 2019, 14,000 Americans a day are cutting the cord. Bottom line? Cord-cutting services are rapidly expanding, while cable subscriptions have more or less become stagnant.

After extensive research and experimentation with these services and devices, it’s clear that in many cases cutting the cord is worth it. It isn’t always easy or convenient and may take an adjustment period, but almost all content that you would get with a cable subscription is now available with a streaming service that will cost less. And as streaming services get bigger and better, it becomes easier to cut the cord. It just comes down to finding the right service and device for your tastes.

Best overall device: Amazon Fire TV Stick

Likely the most versatile streaming device on the market, and you get tremendous bang for your buck with a price that ranges from $30 to $50. The Fire Stick acts as a vehicle for countless apps that will allow you to stream everything from Netflix to HBO to live television (not to mention the Amazon Prime library), with an intuitive, easy-to-use interface that doesn’t take long to learn. It’s super easy to install as well: it simply plugs into an HDMI port (upgraded versions with additional features are also available). If you’re not a tech-savvy viewer, this is a fine option. After a period where it looked like Disney Plus would not be available on Amazon devices, it was announced that it would indeed be supported — only further establishing its status as the best overall device.

Best overall streaming…

UX rant: The nightmare horrorshow that is the Apple TV remote – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Disclaimer: This is a rant. It is one man’s cri de cœur. It is not a review. If you want to read the Ars Technica review of the Apple TV, it’s right here.

I’ve been an Apple guy since the beginning. My first laptop was a Powerbook 100 with a built-in plastic trackball. But unlike the vast majority of Apple products, which are marvels of engineering and design, the remote on the fourth and fifth generation Apple TVs still leaves me in shock at what a nightmare horror-show the thing is.

I wanted to love the Apple TV remote. It was sleek and futuristic. Plus, it had an accelerometer and its own little trackpad. Besides which, I didn’t think I’d really need the remote, anyway, since I could simply tell the TV what I wanted to watch. What wasn’t to love? Turns out, pretty much everything.

Thankfully, though, this interaction travesty provides some good insight into what makes or breaks the user experience.

The “all things to all people” problem

The AppleTV remote doubles as a game controller. I didn’t think I’d game much with the Apple TV (though my kid does between Minecraft sessions), but this functionality seemed cool and futuristic, at least. This leads me to point no. 1: tech hardware products shouldn’t try to be all things to all people (though of course, the iPhone manages to do pretty much everything). TV remotes shouldn’t generally be game controllers—and vice versa.

Especially given the quality of the games on offer. As Killian Bell at Cult of Mac writes, “If you’re gaming on a big TV, I feel like you’re missing out if you choose to do it on what is essentially old mobile hardware. You’re basically getting a giant iPad game that you have to play with a tiny remote.”

The “good looks over utility” problem

Nobody would quibble with the claim that the Apple TV remote looks totally cool. But it seems like real-world usage of the thing was merely an afterthought.

For whatever reason, Apple has a history of making remotes that are too small and too thin. Everything Apple makes is flat and tiny, and the Apple TV remote is no exception. But the lesson here is: just because you can make something tiny doesn’t necessarily mean you should

Full disclosure—I’m a short man with Trump-sized hands. And let me tell you, size does matter when it comes to TV remotes. A TV remote only does one thing: be held, stationary, in one hand. A human hand, not a raccoon hand. When you hold a remote control in your hand, you want to know you’re holding a remote control in your hand. So, it should be shaped like something that would fit in a hand!

Now, come on. You Apple guys know what shape that is. You make computer mice, for crying out loud. A remote control should have depth and roundness. Or how about this: just make it the same shape as the iPhone. Nobody’s complaining about the shape of the iPhones.

But…
