Parks Associates: Disney+ and Apple TV+ Both See Success During First Six Months in the Market – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

DALLAS, May 29, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Parks Associates today released research from a recently fielded consumer survey showing new OTT services Apple TV+ and Disney+ have captured significant market share in the streaming video space, rounding out the top five behind the “Big 3” Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu. The research firm’s Market Snapshot: Disney+ and Apple TV+ highlights the impact of the entry of Disney+ and Apple TV+ in OTT market, including insights into the factors driving their growth.

Parks Associates: Subscriptions to Major OTT Subscription Services

Disney+ has skyrocketed to 25% adoption among US broadband households after just six months in the market. Apple TV+, which launched around the same time, has reached nearly 10% adoption. Disney+ and Apple TV+ are fourth and fifth, respectively, among SVOD services adopted by consumers.

Data presented in this Market Snapshot were drawn primarily from an online survey of more than 10,000 consumers fielded between March 8th and April 3rd to heads of broadband households, after the COVID-19 crisis had begun in the United States. Additional data from the market snapshot:

  • Nearly three in ten broadband households report their use of online video services has increased because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
  • 81% of Disney+ subscribers subscribe to Netflix, as do 72% of Apple TV+ subscribers.
  • Nearly one-half of Disney+ subscribers canceled another OTT service over the last 12 months, as did roughly two-thirds of Apple TV+ subscribers.

“Disney took a broad-based content approach to its Disney+ service, including its Pixar, Stars Wars, Marvel, Nat Geo, and 20th Century Fox properties to make it broadly appealing, far beyond its traditional audience of families with young children,” said Steve Nason, Research Director, Parks Associates. “Very few Disney+ subscribers subscribe only to this service, so households are not picking up Disney in place of another service but adding to their home’s other OTT services. We will see, as household budgets tighten up, if Disney+ has done enough to become an ‘essential service’ for its subscribers.”

Disney+ also benefited from promotions such as the introduction of the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle and its partnership with Verizon where unlimited mobile subscribers and new internet subscribers get a free year of the service.

“Apple TV+ promoted a small stable of original programming and is now looking to supplement that with more third-party content,” Nason said. “Apple TV+’s growth is due largely to a free year of service for those who recently purchased an Apple device, which brings the firm’s brand loyalists into the service. Apple TV+ does have a higher percentage of exclusive non-Netflix subscribers, plus a higher number of households that recently cancelled another OTT service, so it appears Apple does have a core group of dedicated subscribers. Apple’s challenge is to expand beyond that group.”

Loren Bouchard’s Central Park Struggles to Hit the Right Notes for Apple TV: Review – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

The Pitch: Apple TV+ has been searching for a big show to serve as its first hit, since unveiling the streaming service last November. Could it be Central Park, a half-hour animated musical comedy from the creator of Bob’s Burgers and featuring a massive voice cast including Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Stanley Tucci, Daveed Diggs, and Leslie Odom, Jr.? The streaming service’s metaphorical fingers are tightly crossed.

Breaking Into Song: Any fan of the Fox animated sitcom Bob’s Burgers knows that the show isn’t shy about having its characters break into song, or about having music be an overall major part of its wacky hijinks in a seaside town where the eponymous restaurant resides. The Belcher family is very, very weird: there’s burger chef Bob, his gleeful wife Linda, his boy-obsessed teenage daughter Tina, his keyboard-obsessed son Gene, and his bunny-ear-wearing youngest daughter Louise. After nearly a decade on the air, Bob’s Burgers has established itself as one of the funniest, most underrated comedies on television. So, anything new from creator Loren Bouchard and writer Nora Smith should be a cause for celebration.

Central Park (Apple TV)

Central Park is the result of Bouchard and Smith coming together with what feels like a fairly free rein, with a perhaps unlikely co-creator in Gad, best known for providing the voice of the most chipper snowman in the world, Olaf from the Frozen movies. At first blush, it’s easy to see some of the parallels between Bob’s Burgers and Central Park. Both shows focus largely on a family unit, with a straight-man dad, exuberant mom, a boy-obsessed daughter, and an outrageous son. In both shows, there’s an oddball rich character voiced by one of the great actors of his generation. In Bob’s Burgers, it’s Kevin Kline. In Central Park, it’s Tucci in a gender-bending role as a grouchy socialite with the goal of gutting NYC’s Central Park, and the aforementioned Tillerman family trying to fight back with dad Owen, who serves as the park manager, leading the charge.

Pay Attention: That premise is, you may note, where the similarities end. Central Park, through the first four episodes (the first season is 13 episodes long, but just four installments were made available to critics at press time), is a somewhat serialized show where you need to pay attention to what’s going on, a slightly odd fit for Bouchard and Smith. That slightly odd fit extends to some of the characters, such as the street busker voiced by Gad. He serves as the show’s narrator, a role that is so unnecessary that half of the songs and dialogue featuring are dedicated to clarifying that his character definitely serves a purpose. The more time that Gad’s character tags along with members of the Tillerman family,…

Apple TV 3rd Generation Teardown – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Introduction

The latest revision of the Apple TV has hit our doorsteps. And what does iFixit do when a gadget comes a’knockin’ on our door? We investigate of course! Join us as we dismember the Apple TV 3rd Generation for all to see. Follow iFixit on twitter for the latest news.

  • Step 1 Apple TV 3rd Generation Teardown

    • Less than four inches square and an inch tall (the exact size of the 2nd generation Apple TV) the small but mighty Apple TV 3rd Generation adds the ability to play 1080p HD content.

    • The backside of the Apple TV 3rd Generation features the same exact ports as the previous iteration:

    • AC adapter port

    • HDMI output port

    • Micro-USB (for service and support)

    • Optical audio out port

    • 10/100 Base ethernet port

    Edit

    • With little effort from our part, we dive right into the Apple TV by removing the snap-on base.

    • Once inside, we notice an immediate difference from the Apple TV 2nd Generation, the lack of a thermal pad.

    • Perhaps the “new” A5 processor doesn’t get as hot?

    Edit

    • A quick turn of our screwdriver frees the metal heat sink.

    • Under the metal heat sink resides a small thermal plate, just like in the previous generation.

    Edit

    • The logic board is held in place by the power supply connector, but that’s no problem for our spudger. A quick flick and the logic board is free.

    • So far, this device has been significantly easier to crack open than last week’s iPad 3. We have a feeling the trend will continue with the Apple TV, since we just took out almost everything inside.

    Edit

    • Clearing this casing is fast and easy. The power supply is one…

Apple TV vs Roku: Which is the Better Streaming Device? – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

3D Insider is ad supported and earns money from clicks and other ways.

Apple TV and Roku are two of the best streaming media players designed to stream photo, video, and audio content from the Internet and locally stored files on computers, phones, and tablets. They both support 4K HDR video and Dolby Atmos Audio but have fundamental differences when it comes to design, format, connections, and pricing. Find out which device is the better choice for you.

    Apple TV

Apple TV is a streaming media player designed to play audio, video, games, and other types of apps. It usually comes with a simple three-button remote and connects to your home wireless network to let you watch streaming services from the Internet to your TV. It is also compatible with PCs and Macs, and even your personal media collection in the iTunes library. Overall, it is an excellent device to enhance your HDTV experience.

    APPLE TV 4K

    Retail Price: $179

The Apple TV 4K is a gorgeous and intuitive streaming device perfect if you have a house dominated by Apple products. It comes with a better processor and more RAM, making it faster than the previous Apple TVs. It also offers a better experience with its user-friendly interface and easy setup. Furthermore, it has extra support for Dolby Vision, which makes it a better choice for home theater fans.

The design of the Apple TV 4K is thick, but it carries a small footprint. It looks modern and beautiful with glossy, black plastic construction and has an HDMI output and an Ethernet port to access local media. It also comes with a sleek and stylish remote control that allows you to sweep through menus like you would your smartphone. Moreover, the interface is fast and smooth with the 64-bit A10X Fusion chip.

When it comes to features, the Apple TV 4K lives up to its price. It ties well into the Apple ecosystem, allowing you to access content from iTunes, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and the new Apple TV+. The included remote also comes with Siri voice control capabilities. Additionally, the streaming media player offers a few small touches like a pop-up keyboard and the ability to share live photo effects via AirPlay.

The Apple TV 4K can work as your HomeKit hub for your smart home devices. You can control your thermostat, locks, and lights. You can also use HomePod to turn on the TV and pause, skip, or fast-forward media. Lastly, you can easily connect Bluetooth headphones to it and listen privately.

Apple TV 4K has some strong points. The remote control may be challenging to use due to its size, but it is well-built and as responsive as the iPhone. The interface is also stunning, plus the consistency is impressive. Overall, the streaming media device comes with better features, voice control, and HDR formats.

Apple TV 4K review: Ambition, meet reality – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

With the Apple TV 4K, Apple is trying to do more than just provide you with a gadget that can stream Netflix or iTunes Store movies in 4K. This device seeks to solve a problem: the digital TV viewing experience is fragmented and bad, especially if you want to use the sorts of TV network apps that gate episodes or live broadcasts behind a cable provider.

The Apple TV 4K combines an app store, single sign-on authentication with cable providers, Siri-driven search, and a centralized TV app to unify your TV viewing experience whether you’re a cord cutter or just looking for an over-the-top (OTT) addition to your cable subscription.

The previous Apple TV had similar goals, but the new model adds a much faster CPU, long-overdue 4K and HDR support, and tvOS 11 (which is also available on the previous model). tvOS 11 aims to make your life easier with features like AirPod support and home-screen sync. And the Apple TV 4K plays games, too.

Using the Apple TV 4K, I can see and appreciate Apple’s vision for a better TV experience. However, the realities of the entertainment business have prevented that vision from being fully realized—the Apple TV 4K might still be a little too far ahead of its time.

Attempted renovation of the overall TV browsing and viewing experience aside, this device still aims to be the best, most advanced TV streaming device on the market. Generally, it succeeds, but its high cost and dependency on other Apple services make it fall just shy of an unqualified recommendation.

Apple TV Plus is a ‘major shot across the bow’ to Netflix and Disney. Here’s what Wall Street is saying about Apple’s streaming ambitions. – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

    Associated Press

Apple’s September keynote shed more light on the company’s plan to jump into the streaming wars.

While the event on Tuesday revealed a trio of new iPhones, a new iPad, and an updated Apple Watch, perhaps the most significant announcement was the pricing of its upcoming streaming service.

Apple TV Plus will cost $5 a month, undercutting competitors such as Netflix and Hulu and upcoming offerings from Disney, AT&T, and Comcast. Apple also said customers who purchase a new Mac, iPhone, or Apple TV would receive a free year of the service.

The news sent shares of Netflix, Disney, and Roku sliding, with Apple’s pricing seen as a clear challenge to the future of other streaming competitors.

Wall Street analysts have spent months speculating how Apple TV Plus would fit into the tech juggernaut’s larger hardware-driven business. With the highly anticipated reveal of its pricing and the announcement that new customers will get one year free with a device purchase, analysts are forming a more definitive picture of Apple’s content strategy.

Here’s what Wall Street’s top analysts are saying about Apple’s streaming ambitions, and what it could mean for the future of the company.

    Apple

“The key highlight from the Apple Event on 9/10 is more aggressive (lower) pricing on AppleTV+ than we previously expected,” Bernie McTernan, an analyst at Rosenblatt Securities, said in a note to clients on Wednesday.

He continued: “We believe Apple is positioning AppleTV+ as a tool in subscriber acquisition to its ecosystem as opposed to another source of high margin service revenue.”

Wedbush: “The pricing of Apple’s streaming TV service at $4.99 per month is a ‘show stopper.'”

    Apple

    Price target: $245

    Rating: Outperform

“The pricing of Apple’s streaming TV service at $4.99 per month is a ‘show stopper’ and a major shot across the bow at the likes of Netflix and Disney among others,” the Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said in a research note to clients on Wednesday.

Ives added: “In our opinion with an installed base of 900 million active iPhones worldwide we believe Cook & Co. have an opportunity to gain 100 million consumers on the streaming front in…
