Josh walks you through cables, ports, and setup, and explains how to use gestures and spoken commands with the Siri Remote—yes, you can talk to your TV! He helps you navigate and customize the Home screen, plus describes getting-started settings such as inputting your Apple ID and enabling parental controls.
You’ll learn how to use the TV app (whether on the Apple TV box itself, on a Mac running Catalina, on an iPhone or iPad, or on a third-party smart TV), and how you can best view home movies and TV shows. The book also looks at using an Apple TV to listen to your music or Apple Music, download and play podcasts from Music or iTunes, and browse your photos.
In Take Control of Apple TV you’ll also read about:
Compatibility? This book covers the fourth-generation Apple TV (now called Apple TV HD) and the newer Apple TV 4K model. It does not cover earlier generations of Apple TV hardware.
What’s New in Version 3.0
This new version of Take Control of Apple TV has been completely overhauled to reflect the media landscape in 2020, including tvOS 13 and the availability of the Apple TV app outside of the Apple ecosystem. While much of the book is new, here are some highlights:
The streaming wars are upon us, and tech giant Apple has entered the fray. In contrast to Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, and countless other streaming services that have launched or are about to launch, Apple is entirely new to the realm of creating original storytelling content. They’re pouring a ton of money into their inaugural TV series, and Apple TV+ will be launching at something of a disadvantage—there is no backlog of library titles to keep you company on this streaming service. Only Apple TV+ originals.
But before we get to our list of everything that’s confirmed to be streaming on Apple TV+, a few details. First, the streaming service can be accessed using the Apple TV app on your smartphone or tablet, or via your own Apple TV. You will also be able to access Apple TV+ on Roku and Fire TV later this year, as well as smart TVs ranging fro Samsung to Sony to LG to Vizio.
The Apple TV+ price is $4.99 a month, which includes a one-week free trial, but if you purchase a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or Apple TV you’ll get a year of Apple TV+ for free. Your account can be shared with up to six family members, and you can download the content to watch it offline. The content is also available in 4K and Dolby Atmos.
And as of November 1st, Apple TV+ is now live. Here’s everything currently on it, and what you can look forward to seeing in the months and years to come.

The Altice One app is available on Apple TV today.

The nation’s sixth-largest cable TV provider announced Wednesday the addition of an Apple TV app to its streaming service beating Roku to the punch in the competitive streaming video market.
Altice USA provides broadband and pay television in 21 states to some 3.3 million subscribers through its Optimum and Suddenlink brands.
The deal with Apple comes as more and more Americans cut their cable TV cords in favor of streaming services.
Analysts predict the number of TV viewers ending their cable services will triple by 2023 to 76 million.
Like other longtime cable providers, Altice has pivoted toward streaming as subscribers of traditional pay TV have declined.
The Altice One app launched on Apple TV Wednesday. With the app comes live TV streaming, movies, shows On Demand and Cloud DVR Plus options.
New and existing Alice One customers can rent an Apple TV 4K as part of a monthly subscription plan.
Apple TV owners can get the Altice One app free for three months and pay $4.99 per month at the end of the free trial. Altice customers can get Apple TV+ free for one year.

In Walter Issacon’s biography of Steve Jobs, he shares a conversation with Jobs about his vision for the future of TV. Jobs told Issacon that he’d “like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use . . . it would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud.” No longer would users have to fiddle with complex remotes for DVD players and cable channels. “It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine,” Jobs said. “I finally cracked it.”
Jobs’ comments have led many to believe Apple was building an actual television. I personally never thought Apple was doing a TV, and instead was planning to improve its Apple TV set-top box instead.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal story, Apple was indeed working on a TV, but the project was killed over a year ago. My sources suggest any prototype TV Apple had was probably used more to explore design issues around a set-top box rather than as an effort towards a standalone Apple TV.
It would’ve been a mistake for Apple to create an actual TV. There’s cutthroat competition in the TV market, with rivals like Vizio, Samsung, LG and others all fighting for a piece of the pie. Apple would have had a tough time competing in this space, where the majority of TV’s sold are in the $500-$1250 range. The margins are thin, too. Jobs once told me one of his principles in governing Apple was that he would not create a product unless he could get at least 20 points in margin. The TV business is lucky if it can get 10 points.
There are still more reasons an Apple TV wouldn’t make sense. The average life cycle for a TV in the home is seven-10 years. The way technology advances, a TV with integrated smarts would be out of date in two to three years. Unless designed with modular components, most TVs would not be able to keep up with the technology and content distribution advancements that come into the market on a yearly basis now.
On top of that, a TV these days is just a screen for delivering content — but the definition of content is changing. It used to be that a TV only had to handle over-the-air broadcast signals. Now it has to deal with new user interfaces, web browsers, advanced intelligence and multiple forms of streaming media. My personal metaphor for understanding the future of TV is that the TV is a dumb monitor and my cable box, Apple TV, Roku or whatever is the personal computer that makes the monitor “smart.”
Apple is expected to give us an update on the Apple TV next week at the Worldwide Developers Conference. I fully expect it to be some type of advanced set-top box that sits next to any TV and delivers…

When Apple TV+ launched late last year, Apple made it clear that its goal was not to replace or directly compete with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, or any of the other top streaming services, but rather to complement them with a lineup of star-studded original shows and movies like The Morning Show and The Banker. At just $4.99 a month, the price of a subscription was much lower than any of its would-be rivals, and anyone who bought a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or Apple TV could get a free year of the streaming service.
Apple’s approach was certainly unique, but less than a year later, it appears that the company might be ready to level the playing field by expanding its library to include third-party content. According to Bloomberg, Apple is acquiring old movies and TV shows to give the likes of Netflix and Disney+ a run for their money.
Apple executives are said to have begun taking pitches from Hollywood studios about licensing content for Apple TV+. Sources claim that some shows and movies have already been bought. While Apple will reportedly continue to focus heavily on original content, the strategy shift is notable, as there were few signs at launch that Apple TV+ would ever attempt to stand toe to toe with the biggest names in the industry. That said, rumors about Apple acquiring film studio MGM were floating around the internet back in January, though nothing ever came of them.
Apple has yet to buy the rights to any major TV or film franchises, according to the report, but the move does seem to be an admission of sorts that a boutique streaming service with an exceedingly small library — even one with colossal stars both behind and in front of the camera — won’t excel in this industry. Driving that point home, Bloomberg notes that Netflix has thousands of shows and movies on offer, while Apple TV+ currently has fewer than 30.
Bloomberg also reveals that more than 10 million people had signed up for Apple TV+ as of February 2020, but only half of those subscribers “actively use the service.” Plus, a significant percentage of them have yet to pay a penny for TV+, as they are still in the middle of their free trial year. And while 10 million users might sound impressive, Disney+ had 10 million users on day one, and Netflix added 16 million users…
