What is Apple TV Plus?

It’s Apple’s new video subscription streaming service. The Cupertino giant has previously created original content offerings, such as Planet Of The Apps and Carpool Karaoke, for its Apple Music streaming service, but this is a dedicated films and TV shows-only endeavour.

You could call it a Netflix or Amazon Prime Video of sorts, but unlike those rival streaming services TV Plus will be purely about original, ad-free content.

Which devices support Apple TV Plus?

The service will only be available through the latest version of the Apple TV app, which arrived on iPhones, iPads and Apple TV streamers (in over 100 countries) via a May software update. Macs will get the update in the autumn – we imagine before the service goes live.

Select 2018 and 2019 Samsung smart TVs received the Apple TV app in the spring of 2019, while Sony, LG and Vizio smart TVs, Roku streamers and Amazon Fire TV devices will also support the app ‘in the future’. We’d hope this means in time for the launch later this year, but Samsung seems to have secured a degree.

Apple has launched a promo channel on YouTube but it seems unlikely this will show anything more than trailers, so Apple TV Plus on YouTube won’t come any time soon.

Because Apple will hold the rights to every show and film on the service, you’ll be able to download TV shows and movies to watch offline as well as stream on demand. All the content will be exclusive to the platform.

What can you watch on Apple TV Plus?

Apple TV Plus is all about original, ad-free content. No re-runs, no licensed content, just originals created purely for the service.

Rumours are that the firm has invested over $1bn in these TV shows and films and, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook, Apple TV Plus will be “the destination for the highest-quality originals”.

The nation’s sixth-largest cable TV provider announced Wednesday the addition of an Apple TV app to its streaming service beating Roku to the punch in the competitive streaming video market.

Altice USA provides broadband and pay television in 21 states to some 3.3 million subscribers through its Optimum and Suddenlink brands.

The deal with Apple comes as more and more Americans cut their cable TV cords in favor of streaming services.

Analysts predict the number of TV viewers ending their cable services will triple by 2023 to 76 million.

Like other longtime cable providers, Altice has pivoted toward streaming as subscribers of traditional pay TV have declined.

The Altice One app launched on Apple TV Wednesday. With the app comes live TV streaming, movies, shows On Demand and Cloud DVR Plus options.

New and existing Alice One customers can rent an Apple TV 4K as part of a monthly subscription plan.

Apple TV owners can get the Altice One app free for three months and pay $4.99 per month at the end of the free trial. Altice customers can get Apple TV+ free for one year.

It was an inevitability. After the success of iTunes and the App Store, Apple has been slowly building out its services with things like iCloud, Apple Music, and the recently announced upgrade to Apple News.

However, Apple’s new venture into streaming video with some big updates to Apple TV might be its most lucrative endeavour yet. Or its biggest gamble.

Similar to Netflix, Apple’s goal for its new Apple TV+ service is to offer up a slate of original programming including new shows such as Amazing Stories and The Morning Show, while still hosting the sort of third-party content that’s already available on regular Apple TV.

However, where things get a bit interesting is that thanks to partnerships with companies including HBO, the new Apple TV Channels app also makes it possible access to premium content like episodes of Game of Thrones that were previously only available from a cable package or direct through HBO via HBO Now.

A new Apple TV app, how does it work?

In addition to all the shows and content already available on Apple TV, Apple is integrating services that might already be paying for, like DirecTV and Spectrum, into the base app, allowing you to watch all favourite your shows on Apple TV.

Meanwhile, for people who don’t have a cable plan, Apple is also adding support for over-the-top TV services like Hulu, PlayStation Vue, and others (but no YouTube TV) to Apple TV.

However, if you don’t need access to a full TV bundle or cable package, the new Apple TV Channels app will let you subscribe to specific networks like HBO, Showtime, and Starz, giving you access to their full content catalogues.

There will also be a built-in suggestion engine curated by editors and bolstered by insights from machine learning to help find and recommend your next favourite show. Shows will appear in separate categories based on your preferences, and the app will even include a dedicated mode for kids.

What devices will the new Apple TV app work on?

As expected, Apple TV will work on Apple TV boxes, and on iPhones and iPads, with all of the new features arriving via a software update in May. Additionally, Apple is also bringing Apple TV to macOS for the first time later this fall.

But the real news is that Apple is also bringing Apple TV to a range of devices outside Apple’s traditional ecosystem, from smart TVs made by major manufacturers including Samsung and LG, to third-party streaming boxes from Amazon and Roku. Though once again, Android TV streaming boxes like the Nvidia Shield and others won’t have access. The app will arrive on supported smart TVs and streaming devices later this spring.

Sling TV is a new over-the-top streaming service that provides live cable broadcasts over the internet. Here’s how to get it to the big screen via Apple TV.

Sling TV is the new over-the-top streaming service that brings you live cable broadcasts over the Internet. It works on several devices, and was rolled out to Xbox One just last week, but doesn’t have an Apple TV app.

If you’re in the Apple ecosystem, you can send it to the big screen with the magic of AirPlay. Here’s a look at how it’s done.

While Sling TV is available on several set-top boxes and mobile devices, including iOS (7.0 and above) with iPhone or iPad, there currently isn’t a Sling TV app for the Apple TV. But, thanks to Apple’s proprietary AirPlay technology, you can shoot it over to the big screen.

Of course, it requires an Apple TV, and the company just lowered the price of Apple TV from $99 to $69 — which will include the new HBO Now app exclusively for the first three months – just in time for Game of Thrones.

AirPlay Sling TV to Apple TV

I would imagine we’ll see an official Sling TV app for Apple TV at some point, but, that could change if the recent rumors of Apple starting its own cable streaming service come to fruition. In the meantime, you can use the following workaround.

First install the Sling TV app on your iPhone, iPad, or compatible iPod touch. Once you find something you want to watch, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and tap the AirPlay button. Then choose your Apple TV, scroll down a bit further and turn on Mirroring.

That’s all there is to it. Whatever you’re watching will start to play on the big screen.
