To test beta versions of apps using TestFlight, you’ll need to accept an email or public link invitation from the developer and have a device that you can use to test.

Members of the developer’s team in App Store Connect can be added and will have access to all builds of the app.

All other invited testers will have access to builds that the developer makes available to them. A developer can invite you to test with an email or a public link invitation.

Required platforms.

What do you get for your money? That’s the question everyone looking to buy a piece of tech asks themselves. It also happens to be the question this recurring feature tries to answer. Is it worth spending extra on high-end gear, or do you get what you need with cheaper models? Every month, we’ll look at some of the cheapest and most expensive products in a given category, testing each to see what their limits are and help you figure out when you can cheap it out, and when to plunk down some extra cash to get what you need.

In this month’s high/low review, we compare two devices for casting your media from a mobile device to a HDTV, the $35 Google Chromecast and the $99 Apple TV.

We may be living in the era of near-omnipresent streaming media, but there is still something to be said for sitting down in front of the Tee Vee every now and then. It’s the biggest screen in your home, and the most comfortable place for watching. But if all of your media lives on a tablet or cell phone, how do you get your media easily onto the big screen? Simple: you plug one of these devices into your TV, and it wirelessly bridges the gap between the new world and the old.

Sure, both of these devices do more than just cast. They each have their own app ecosystems and their own content stores. And yes, there are many devices playing in this field—the Roku and Amazon Fire TV among them.

But many people just want to be able to cast, and we often get asked about those abilities specifically: which device is best for throwing a video, song, movie from a mobile screen to the big screen? Given the substantial cost difference, it seems people are curious if they can get away with a $35 Chromecast or if there’s some reason the Apple TV is worth their $99.

Let’s explore the two and see how they differ.

Google Chromecast

Google goes for a minimalist approach with the Chromecast, a small thumb drive-sized device that plugs into two ports on your television: the HDMI port, and a USB port, where it draws the electricity needed to power the device. If your HDTV doesn’t have a USB port, or if the port on your TV doesn’t supply enough juice to power the Chromecast, Google also throws in a USB power adapter. The internals of this dongle are simple: it is really little more than a Wi-Fi interface and a few chips that output a video image. Most of the heavy lifting is done by your mobile device: a phone, tablet, or PC using software from Google or one of its partners that supports Chromecast.

Apple hasn’t been entirely secretive about its ambitions to offer a subscription video service, but it also hasn’t revealed its master plan — until today. As the star attractions of the company’s It’s Show Time media event in Cupertino, Apple TV Channels and Apple TV+ were just announced to an audience of journalists, celebrities, and production partners.

As was widely rumored before today’s event, the new services represent a combination of Apple-developed original content and bundled third-party channels. All of the content will be accessible from a redesigned version of the Apple TV app found on Apple TV devices and iOS.

Apple TV Channels will include content from HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax, CBS All Access, Epix, MTV Hits, History Channel Vault, Tastemade, the Lifetime Movie Club, Shudder, and many other channels. The redesigned Apple TV app has a Netflix-style interface, but with an easier means of adding new content — two clicks to add a new channel — and purchase movies, without having the exit the TV app and move into the iTunes Store.

Apple will launch the new Apple TV Channels in May with a software update to the Apple TV 4K. Additionally, the Apple TV app will be coming to the Mac this fall for the first time.

Better yet, you won’t need an iPad, iPhone, or Mac to watch Apple’s streaming videos. In addition to the company’s own Apple TV devices, select Samsung Smart TVs will include the Apple TV app — a development largely revealed at this year’s CES. LG, Sony, and Vizio will follow after the spring, with Roku and Amazon Fire TV as well. The new Apple TV app will work in over 100 countries.

Apple also announced its own original content service called Apple TV+, with Steven Spielberg, Sofia Coppola, Reese Witherspoon, J.J. Abrams, Ron Howard, and M. Night Shyamalan among the luminaries providing a pre-recorded introduction to the creative partnership. Celebrities such as Chris Evans of Captain America fame were also in the audience during the official reveal.

Apple has invested upwards of $1 billion in developing TV shows and movies for the service, notably including partnerships with:

• Talk show host Oprah Winfrey for “original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world.”
• Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell for two seasons of a drama about an aging TV morning show anchor.

Apple TV+ is going all-in on Fraggle Rock. Weeks after debuting a handful of pandemic-produced shorts, Vulture hears the streamer has struck a deal with the Jim Henson Company to produce a formal reboot of the classic kids’ show, complete with full-length episodes. As part of the agreement, Apple has also acquired exclusive streaming rights to all 96 episodes of the original 1983–87 live-action HBO series (and some specials) and will make them available to subscribers in 100 countries on Wednesday, May 27. The deal marks the first time Apple TV+ will offer previously produced content as part of its offering, but that does not mean the platform is getting into the library business.

According to a source familiar with Apple’s thinking, the company remains uninterested in using Apple TV+ as a repository for old shows and movies from other suppliers, the way Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu have done for years. That’s because, per the source, with big studios such as Warner Bros., Disney, and Universal looking to keep their best and biggest titles for their own streaming platforms, there simply aren’t enough great titles around to make a library strategy work. In the case of Fraggle Rock, however, having the older episodes available to stream alongside the new content made more sense than not having them as part of the offering.

The Apple source says that had the company not acquired the library, consumers would’ve had to go to HBO (the former home for the show) for old episodes and TV+ for the new. By having both, Apple can now accurately market itself as the home to all things Fraggle. (Well, at least live-action: The animated spinoff of the show isn’t part of the agreement.) The source says Henson execs first pitched Apple on the idea of bundling the classic episodes in with the deal for the reboot. Initially, the company wasn’t interested but ultimately realized it didn’t make sense for the old episodes to be streaming elsewhere, in essence competing with the reboot.

A Bloomberg report earlier this month indicated Apple had been meeting with content suppliers about library content and done deals for older movies and TV shows, and that these deals represented a change in strategy. But the source close to Apple says that there has been no change in the basic strategy, even if the deal for Fraggle Rock does represent a modest evolution in thinking at the streamer. The only cases in which Apple might consider buying library titles is if it is also working on a new project related to the existing property.

So were Apple to end up doing a deal for the rights to the James Bond franchise (something which has been buzzed about since at least 2017), the company would also likely try to get the back library of Bond films so it could market itself as the home for all things 007.
