Sling TV is a new over-the-top streaming service that provides live cable broadcasts over the internet. Here’s how to get it to the big screen via Apple TV.

Sling TV is the new over-the-top streaming service that brings you live cable broadcasts over the Internet. It works on several devices, and was rolled out to Xbox One just last week, but doesn’t have an Apple TV app.

If you’re in the Apple ecosystem, you can send it to the big screen with the magic of AirPlay. Here’s a look at how it’s done.

While Sling TV is available on several set-top boxes and mobile devices, including iOS (7.0 and above) with iPhone or iPad, there currently isn’t a Sling TV app for the Apple TV. But, thanks to Apple’s proprietary AirPlay technology, you can shoot it over to the big screen.

Of course, it requires an Apple TV, and the company just lowered the price of Apple TV from $99 to $69 — which will include the new HBO Now app exclusively for the first three months – just in time for Game of Thrones.

AirPlay Sling TV to Apple TV

I would imagine we’ll see an official Sling TV app for Apple TV at some point, but, that could change if the recent rumors of Apple starting its own cable streaming service come to fruition. In the meantime, you can use the following workaround.

First install the Sling TV app on your iPhone, iPad, or compatible iPod touch. Once you find something you want to watch, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and tap the AirPlay button. Then choose your Apple TV, scroll down a bit further and turn on Mirroring.

That’s all there is to it. Whatever you’re watching will start to play on the big screen.

Sling TV is currently $20/month for just shy of 20 channels including ESPN, TNT, Disney Channel, Adult Swim, CNN, AMC, and others.

To test beta versions of apps using TestFlight, you’ll need to accept an email or public link invitation from the developer and have a device that you can use to test.

Members of the developer’s team in App Store Connect can be added and will have access to all builds of the app.

All other invited testers will have access to builds that the developer makes available to them. A developer can invite you to test with an email or a public link invitation.

Required platforms.

• iOS apps: iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 8 or later. iMessage apps and sticker packs require iOS 10 or later.
• tvOS apps: Apple TV running tvOS 9 or later.
• watchOS apps: Apple Watch running watchOS 2 or later.

TestFlight is not available for Mac apps.

First, install the TestFlight app on the device you’ll use for testing. Then, accept your email or follow the public link invitation to install the beta app. You can install the beta app on up to 30 devices.

Installing a Beta iOS App from an Email or Public Link Invitation

1. Install TestFlight on the iOS device that you’ll use for testing.
2. Open your invitation email or tap on the public link on your iOS device.
3. Tap View in TestFlight or Start Testing; or tap Install or Update for the app you want to test.

Installing a Beta tvOS App from an Email Invitation

1. Install TestFlight on Apple TV.
2. Open your invitation email on a mobile device or computer.
3. Click or tap Start Testing. You will be taken to a webpage with a redemption code.
4. Open TestFlight on Apple TV.
5. Go to Redeem and enter the redemption code.

Installing a Beta tvOS App from a Public Link Invitation

1. Install TestFlight on an iOS device and Apple TV where you can sign in to the same App Store account.
2. Tap the public link on your iOS device.
3. Tap Accept for the app you want to test.
4. Open TestFlight on Apple TV. You must be signed in to the same App Store account you used on your iOS device.
5. Install the app you want to test.

Installing a Beta watchOS App from an Email or Public Link Invitation

1. Install TestFlight on the iOS device that you’ll use for testing.
2. Open your invitation email or tap on the public link on your iOS device.
3. Tap View in TestFlight or Start Testing.
4. If you are testing an app that’s for Apple Watch only, tap Install or Update from the Apps list.
5. If the app is an iOS app that includes an Apple Watch app, install the iOS app first, then from the App Details page under the Information section, you will see a Watch section. If the Apple Watch app is available and compatible with your watch, you’ll see a button to install it.

If you already have the App Store version of the app installed on your device, the beta version of the app will replace that version. When you’ve downloaded the beta app, you’ll see an orange dot next to its name that identifies it as a beta.

Setup

Set up your Apple TV Set up your Apple TV and install the apps you’d like to use (e.g., Netflix, Hulu+, Plex). Connect Harmony and Apple TV Once connected, you may use Harmony to control your Apple TV and trigger Activities in which Apple TV is included.

Add Apple TV to your Harmony setup

Mobile Desktop

1. Launch the Harmony app.
2. Select , then Harmony Setup > Add/Edit Devices & Activities.

3. Select DEVICES and then press the ADD DEVICE button at the bottom of the screen.
4. Select SCAN FOR WI-FI DEVICES and Harmony will search for Apple TVs on your home Wi‑Fi network.

5. Once added, Harmony will prompt you to create an Activity. Select Yes.
6. Continue through the series of questions to build your Watch Apple TV Activity.
7. Follow the on screen guide to select your proper Activity devices and inputs.
8. Once created, Harmony will be able to control your Apple TV.
9. You may also choose to enable text and voice entry.

Want to enable voice and text entry on Apple TV?

Harmony hub‑based products allow you to use the Harmony app for text entry.

Harmony hub will send text commands to Apple TV using Bluetooth. To enable this you must first pair the two devices:

1. Using the Harmony app
2. Select ENABLE TEXT ENTRY and select your Watch Apple TV Activity. Harmony hub is now in pairing mode.
3. Using your Apple TV remote, select Settings > General > Bluetooth. Apple TV is now in pairing mode.

Harmony and Apple TV should pair after several seconds. If you’re having problems pairing, try removing any existing keyboard pairings from Apple TV by selecting it, clicking OK, and selecting Forget this device.

1. Launch the Harmony app and sign into your account.
2. Select your Harmony remote, followed by DEVICES > ADD DEVICE.
3. Enter manufacturer Apple and model Apple TV.
4. Finally, select the sync icon in the upper right corner of the settings menu, followed by SYNC NOW.

Harmony hub‑based products may also use the Harmony app

• Keyboard allows you to easily enter text or use voice search. Use this mode when your Apple TV displays a keyboard on the television screen.

• allows you to control your Activity using simple swipe gestures over your phone screen. For example, swiping up/down will change your volume and left/right can rewind and fast forward.

Netflix

Direction Pad Navigation will navigate the Netflix app.

Media Keys such as Play, Pause, Stop, Fast-Forward and Rewind commands work.

During playback pressing the up arrow twice will bring up the item description. Holding OK will bring up the subtitles and AirPlay speaker options.

Text entry is possible using the Harmony app.
