Who can get a free subscription?

You are eligible for a free one-year subscription to Apple TV+ if you purchased a new Apple device since September 10, 2019. These include a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac. Your purchase must have occurred through Apple or an Apple authorized reseller, and you must claim your offer within three months of first setting up your new device. For purchases made prior to the launch of Apple TV+, the start date for this three month window is November 1, 2019.

Activating your subscription

To activate your Apple TV+ subscription:

1. Turn on your eligible device, including iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, or Mac.
2. Sign in with your Apple ID.
3. Open the TV app on your eligible device.

4. Tap Enjoy 1 Year Free on the main page of an Apple TV+ show.

6. If applicable, enter your Apple ID password.

7. Confirm your billing information. You will not be charged during the one-year free trial.

Note: Your eligible device must be using the latest software update for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, or macOS, respectively.

The fine print

By claiming your free subscription, you’re also committing to a monthly subscription plan that automatically renews until canceled.

Apple explains:

You can cancel at any time in Settings at least a day before each renewal date. If you cancel during your free year, you and your family members will immediately lose access to Apple TV+ and the remainder of your 1-year free trial. You can’t reactivate this trial.

What about Family Sharing?

Once your Apple TV+ subscription is activated, anyone attached to your Apple ID with Family Sharing can also use the service. The person in the Family Sharing group with the qualified device has to initiate the 1-year free period before anyone else can access it.

Apple is extending the free trials of its Apple TV+ streaming service for users whose plans were set to expire in the next three months.

The iPhone maker gave out 12-month passes to its then-new streaming service to individuals who purchased Apple products last fall when it put out its new iPhones, iPads and Macs. But those users whose trials were going to run out between Nov. 1 and Jan. 31 will now see their service continue uninterrupted through February.

The tech giant made the decision because many Americans are still facing coronavirus-related restrictions as winter approaches, Apple told TechCrunch.

The extension will apply automatically, and users who were already paying for Apple TV+ will see a $4.99 credit show up on their account for the next three months, the report said.

Apple’s $5-a-month subscription has Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carrell’s “The Morning Show,” as well as the critically-acclaimed documentary “Boys State.”

Utiliser Freebox AirMedia

Vous avez la possibilité de lancer des contenus audiovisuels (photos, vidéos, musiques) depuis votre périphérique mobile iPhone, iPad, iPod ou Mac compatible sur votre Freebox Server ou Freebox Player (donc votre téléviseur), au choix, le tout sans fil.

Prenons l’exemple d’un iPhone/iPod.

• Vous devez êtes connecté à votre réseau WiFi Freebox depuis votre iPhone/iPod (ici dans Réglages > Wi-Fi) :

• Lancez au choix une application Musique, Vidéo, Photos ou n’importe quelle application capables de lire un média, puis assurez-vous que votre TV ainsi que le Freebox Player sont allumés.
• Sélectionnez le média de votre choix afin de le lancer (dans notre exemple, nous souhaitons lire une chanson depuis l’application Musique). Faites ensuite apparaître le Centre de contrôle en glissant votre doigt du bas de l’écran vers le haut.
  Appuyez sur l’icône 

 

• Choisissez le boîtier Freebox sur lequel vous souhaitez lire votre fichier.
  Ici, nous voulons lire le morceau sur le téléviseur, nous sélectionnons donc Freebox Player :

  

Votre téléviseur (ou matériel HiFi si relié au Freebox Player) diffuse automatiquement le fichier que vous avez choisi.
Une notification est affichée sur votre écran TV, vous indiquant le morceau en cours de lecture. Le son se joue alors en remplacement du son initial (dans le cas où vous étiez en train de visionner une chaîne télévisée, par exemple) :

  

S’il s’agit d’une photo ou d’une vidéo, elle s’affiche en plein écran.
Vous pouvez librement naviguer depuis votre périphérique, votre téléviseur suivra automatiquement (vidéos y compris).

Vous pouvez choisir la fonction Recopie vidéo afin de visionner sur votre téléviseur l’écran tel que vous le voyez sur votre périphérique compatible AirMedia.

Si vous choisissez la sortie Freebox Server, le morceau (musique uniquement) sélectionné sera joué sur l’enceinte intégrée au boîtier Server. Si vous y avez relié un périphérique audio (via la prise femelle jack verte située au dos), alors c’est lui qui prendra le relais et émettra le son. 

    L’écran en façade du Server vous indique les informations sur le morceau joué.

Dans le cadre d’un MultiTV, vous avez la possibilité de choisir sur quel Player vous souhaitez jouer votre morceau.

Afin de différencier vos boîtiers Player (si vous disposez de l’option MultiTV), vous avez la possibilité de modifier l’appellation de chacun d’entre eux (par exemple “Salon” et “Chambre”) depuis le menu Freebox TV > Réglages > Système > Réglages réseau > Nom réseau du Player :

          

Vous pouvez choisir de désactiver AirMedia sur votre Player ou d’ajouter un mot de passe pour son utilisation (depuis le menu principal Freebox TV > Réglages > Application > AirMedia Video > Activer AirMedia et Mot de passe). Ce dernier vous sera alors demandé lorsque vous lancerez la lecture d’un morceau depuis votre périphérique portable.

One of the new Apple TV’s biggest upsides is its game playing ability. Indeed, Apple’s next generation Apple TV will focus heavily on gaming, and even comes equipped with a Wii-inspired motion remote/controller with a touchpad.

Certain developers are already licking their chops at the possibilities of the Apple TV as a gaming hub. In fact, one such developer has already used the now-available Apple TV simulator to run an emulator. This emulator allows for old-school games, like the Sega classic Golden Axe, to be played.

One such example is with an emulator named Provenance. Developed by James Addyman, Provenance is a multi-emulator capable of emulating games from a variety of legacy hardware. Provenance is already running on the Apple TV simulator found inside the latest version of Xcode.

As you can see from his tweet, it only took Addyman 3 hours to get Provenance working on the Apple TV simulator.

Whether or not emulators and other non-approved App Store games will be allowed to be side loaded on the Apple TV 4th generation is still anyone’s guess at this point, but it does make our minds race while considering the possibilities.

Provenance, for example, will allow users to emulate games from the following classic hardware platforms:

• Sega Genesis
• Game Gear/Master System
• Sega CD
• SNES
• NES
• GB/GBC
• GBA

The app is open source, and can be viewed on GitHub.

The fact that Xcode 7 now allows users to side load apps on iOS devices, may make it possible to do the same on the Apple TV and tvOS, but nothing is guaranteed at this point.

Recent Movie and TV Show Announcements

Bride

“Bride,” a new movie from Apple and film studio A24, is coming to ‌Apple TV‌+. The plot follows a “brilliant entrepreneur” who creates a woman to be the ideal wife. She rejects her creator and is “forced to flee her confined existence, confronting a world that sees her as a monster.” While on the run, she finds her true identity and the strength to remake herself.

Notable names: Scarlet Johansson will star.

The Velvet Underground

Apple purchased the rights to “The Velvet Underground” a documentary that follows the 1960’s band of the same name. “The Velvet Underground” was headlined by Lou Reed and was once managed by Andy Warhol, and it was known as the “house band” at the Factory, which was Warhol’s studio that served as a hangout for artists and a venue for legendary parties.

“The Velvet Underground” documentary will feature never before seen performances and recordings, Warhol films, experimental art, and in-depth interviews with key players of that time.

Earthsound

“Earthsound” is a natural history documentary series that tells stories from the natural world using the latest in audio technology. It will take advantage of cinematic 360-degree sound to “reveal the unexpected, unfamiliar, and untold natural stories on every continent of the planet.”

Apple has ordered 12 half-hour episodes of the series.

The Snoopy Show (Coming February 5)

Apple in February 2021 will launch a new series called “The Snoopy Show,” which will feature new Snoopy and Peanuts adventures. There are also several standalone Peanuts specials that are coming to ‌Apple TV‌+.

Untitled Musical Comedy

Apple has inked a deal for a star-studded musical comedy featuring several well-known “Saturday Night Live” alums. Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Armisen, Kristin Chenoweth, and Cecily Strong will have roles in the show.

The musical comedy series will follow a couple on a backpacking trip that’s meant to reinvigorate their relationship. While on their journey, the couple find the magical town of Schmigadoon, where everyone acts as if they’re in a studio musical from the 1940s.

Cecily Strong will star as Melissa, one half of the couple on the trip, while Key will play Josh, her long term partner. Armisen will play Reverend Layton, the mild-mannered religious leader of the town, and Chenoweth will play Mildred Layton,…

We were under the impression that a new Apple TV box was coming this year, but leaks have indicated that  a new revision of Apple’s streaming box might not happen until 2021. 

The tvOS update is already live and we had though that they’ll be a new Apple TV box to go with it. Despite Apple’s October event looming launch, it’s unlikely that we’ll be seeing a refresh at the event. In all likelihood it looks the next streaming player will slip into 2021.

Here’s what we know about the next Apple TV box.

When will the new Apple TV box be released?

The Apple TV HD went on sale October 2015. The most recent Apple TV box launched in 2017, and brought with it 4K and HDR support. A new box did not arrive in 2019, however.

Jon Prosser tweeted that a new Apple TV 4K with the codename Neptune T1125 is ready to ship all the way back in May.

Turned out that was incorrect as Bloomberg cited that “people familiar with the development” believe the device won’t ship until next year. That means the new Apple TV box will go on sale probably some time in early 2021.

How much will the new Apple TV 6 cost?

The 32GB version of Apple TV 4K  sells for £179, and £199 for the 64GB version. The fourth generation Apple TV HD is still available for £149.

With a 64GB and 128GB version of the Apple TV 6 said to be in the works, it’s likely this would replace the existing 32GB/64GB versions.

Our thoughts is that the price will remain the same at £179 and £199 if Apple wants to remain even slightly competitive with the likes of Amazon, Google and Roku.

What does the new Apple TV 2021 look like?

One thing that has been consistent about the new Apple TV box is that its the physical design will remain the same.

That’s not to say it couldn’t use an update. The current box has a single HDMI 2.0 output and a move to HDMI 2.1 would enable eARC for Atmos audio.

According to 9to5mac, a new remote is in the works. The current Siri voice remote is not much loved and not ideal for gaming, especially as this latest streaming player is being positioned as a gaming device.

What features will the new Apple TV box have?

The current box packs a powerful A10X chipset, but info uncovered in iOS 13.4 suggests the new streamer will bump that up to A12 or A13 for better gaming performance.

An A12X would turn the Apple TV into a more powerful gaming platform. 9to5mac has reported that Apple is producing 64GB and 128GB versions to ensure there’s enough space to store games too.
