Apple TV 4K (2017) review – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

TODAY’S BEST DEALS

UPDATE: After the latest Apple TV 4K? The Apple TV 4K 2021 is now on the market, updating the streamer’s problematic Siri remote, upgrading the processing, and adding high frame rate capability as well as color calibration functionality through compatible iPhones. For our review of the 2017 model, though, read on below…

The Apple TV 4K (2017) feels like a confident step forward for Apple’s little streaming box, even if it took a while to get here – and that’s especially true if you’ve recently invested in a slightly-too-fancy-but-go-on-it’s-a-treat 4K HDR TV. The Apple TV 4K is one of the best options you’ve got to place under that TV, with a few caveats.

The Apple TV 4K can handle all 4K resolution content, with HDR10 and Dolby Vision supported, so the main new standards are covered – and (depending on the TV you’ve connected it to) the pictures look fantastic. From the flyover screensavers to the menu interface, everything packs in more pixels and looks sharper for it.

Apple TV 4K is also the only video streaming device to support both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision formats. The announcement came during Apple’s WWDC 2018 keynote and came alongside the news that iTunes will now stock Dolby Atmos-enabled films and TV shows.

Since tvOS (the operating system that both the Apple TV 4K and standard Apple TV use) first appeared. it’s really improved. Universal search is getting better all the time, and if you subscribe to Apple Music it makes the Apple TV a competent jukebox as well as a top-tier movie streamer.

The speedy A10X processor means you should be able to navigate the interface and load apps a hair faster than before, and Dolby Vision is a real asset to the streaming device as it’s a format that few streaming devices support right now.

That said, it’s an increasingly competitive market when it comes to streaming content to your large-screen television: Roku, Amazon and Google are all vying for the top spot, so does the Apple TV 4K have enough to fight its way to pride of place beneath your set? Well, maybe, maybe not.

The answer largely depends how deeply tied you are into the Apple ecosystem, your TV’s limitations and just how much of that scrumptious 4K content you can wrangle up.

The Apple TV 4K isn’t a flawless system, but if you’re looking for a 4K streamer with a few future-facing technologies, a deep-rooted connection to all of your iDevices and a decent app selection, it might just be the perfect streamer for you.

Price and release date

  • 32GB Apple TV 4K priced at £179 / $179 / AU$249
  • 64GB option costs £199 / $199 / AU$279
  • Latest model released on September 22, 2017

In terms of price, the Apple TV 4K isn’t the cheapest streaming box on the market (an honor that currently belongs to Google’s Chromecast). But that premium price is largely to be expected with Apple products, mostly due to the polish and extras on offer.

The new box comes in two storage options: 32GB and 64GB, and unless you plan on going heavy on the apps, the 32GB should be fine for most folks.

That being said, it’s worth noting that Apple has recently raised the size limit for apps permitted on the box to 4GB, so if you’re thinking of having this as a micro-console then you might want to scale up to be on the safe side.

There’s not a lot of difference between the price of the new Apple TV 4K and the previous model from a couple of years ago, with Apple clearly keen to encourage consumers to go for the newer model.

The 32GB Apple TV 4K comes in at £179 / $179 / AU$249, and the 64GB option at £199 / $199 / AU$279. Compare that to the 2015 model, which is now £149 / $149 / AU$209, and it makes choosing between them a tough decision.

New 4K interface

  • Sleek interface looks great in 4K
  • Occasional lag while switching apps
  • Screen mirroring is great

The ‘new’ interface on the Apple TV 4K is basically a cleaned up version of the one that adorned the previous box – it’s been upgraded to pack in more pixels and look sleeker on a UHD TV.

It’s been designed with ease of use in mind, mirroring across devices from iPad to iPhone (using the new TV app, which is coming to parts of the world other than the US by the end of the year) for a consistent experience.

The other upgrade here is that coverage of live sports (in the US) has been enhanced to deliver tailored content: you can now see live scores and be notified of exciting moments in games that the Apple TV thinks you might like, making it easier to not miss a beat of the key stuff.

We couldn’t test this in the UK or Australia as the functionality isn’t available yet in these territories (Apple is yet to confirm its release plans outside of the US), but if your box can properly work out the things you like to watch it could really cause some arguments when you’re in the middle of an enthralling film, and have to turn casually to your partner and say “Honey, can I just…?”

The overall performance of the Apple TV 4K was a touch slow at times, with a spinning loading wheel appearing when transitioning between apps or calling up different shows. However, when we started to stream the interface was snappy, suggesting that the issue was not with our fiber optic internet connection.

This lag can be irritating when you’re navigating around the TV and moving from game to TV show, or trying to browse new titles, but it wasn’t a prevalent occurrence overall.

Of course, streaming videos isn’t the only thing the Apple TV 4K can do: It’s also a great center for your burgeoning smart home thanks the integration of HomeKit, Apple’s proprietary technology that brings the IoT to iOS.

Not only can it control your Homekit devices, which are starting to make their way into the home quietly in the form of speakers, smart plugs or Philips Hue bulbs, but the ease with which an iPhone or iPad syncs with the Apple TV is impressive.

Screen mirroring is instant, and makes it really easy to share content on the big screen. It’s not quite as useful as Chromecast if you want to use something like Google Photos – which is superior to the onboard Apple Photos app in terms of the sheer amount of stuff you can save – but it can show pretty much anything else instantly.

The only thing that’s locked is content from some streaming services – at least that’s the case in the UK. Sky Go couldn’t be mirrored onto the screen, so it’s not a catch-all solution to getting content onto the living room television.

Apple TV 4K (2021) review – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Two-minute review

It’s been four years since Apple last revamped its streaming box, and you’d be forgiven for initially being underwhelmed – the Apple TV 4K (2021) looks identical to its predecessor, the Apple TV 4K (2017) and the tweaks and improvements it offers over its the previous iteration are, on the face of it, minuscule. However, the interface is remarkably slick, and it finally brings more than just TV streaming to the table.

The Apple TV 4K (2021) is powered by the A12 Bionic processor, which is also found in the iPad and iPhone XS, rather than the A10X chip used in the previous iteration. This makes navigating the interface slightly speedier than before, and it also provides enough processing power to play high-frame-rate (60fps) HDR videos more smoothly than before. On top of that, there’s a handy color balance feature, which uses the light sensor in any iPhone that supports Face ID to check and tweak your TV’s color balance so it’s more accurate and in line with industry standards, without you having to manually adjust the TV’s settings.

Like its predecessor, the Apple TV 4K (2021) comes with either 32GB or 64GB of storage space – 32GB should be fine for most people unless you plan on downloading oodles of apps, games or movies and TV shows. As well as the streaming box itself, you’ll also get the revamped Siri remote.

The remote supplied with the Apple TV 4K (2017) was a bone of contention, but the new-look Siri remote included here is thinner, and ditches the touch-sensitive trackpad in favor of a circular clickpad, which makes scrolling through the interface far easier.

As well as allowing you to watch movies and shows from the major streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, and of course, Apple TV Plus, the Apple TV 4K (2021) also provides access to Apple’s services, from gaming platform Arcade to Apple Music and even Apple Fitness+. Apple’s voice-assistant, Siri, also comes built-in, and it’s an effective way to search for movies, TV shows and music, either by title or by genre, and you can use AirPlay to share everything from photos and video clips to presentations to your TV.

The Apple TV 4K (2021) isn’t just for streaming – it can double as a HomeKit Hub, so you can control your smart home devices, even when you’re not at home – and if you have a HomeKit-enabled video doorbell or home security camera, you’ll be able to see a live feed on your TV. It also has Thread smart home technology built in, which enables your smart home gadgets from different manufacturers to work together more seamlessly.

The Apple TV 4K (2021) doesn’t come cheap – in fact, it’s one of the priciest streamers on the market, costing around three times more than Roku’s 4K streaming stick+. For those that are deeply tied into the Apple Ecosystem, though, or who want to upgrade their streamer to provide the smoothest, sharpest 4K playback possible, it’s well worth investing in.

Apple TV 4K (2021) price and availability

  • List price: $179 / £169 / AU$249

As we’ve already mentioned, the Apple TV 4K (2021) comes in two variants – a 32GB model priced at $179 / £169 / AU$249, and a 64GB model that will set you back $199 / £189 / AU$279. It’s available to pre-order now, and should start shipping by the end of May – in the UK Apple Store it’s showing shipping within 1-2 weeks.

In the US and Australia, this is the same price as the current Apple TV 4K (2017) was when it launched; in the UK both versions are £10 cheaper.

The new Siri Remote is also available to purchase separately for use with the previous-generation Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, for $59 / £55 / AU$59.

Design

  • Sleek glossy black cube design
  • Re-vamped thinner, weightier Siri remote
  • Powered by A12 Bionic chip

The latest Apple TV 4K certainly isn’t the most compact TV streaming device on the market, but it’s not the bulkiest either – measuring 3.9 x 3.9 x 1.4 inches / 9.8 x 8.8 x 3.5cm (w x d x h) it can slot easily into your existing home cinema setup. It has a matt black top with a discreet Apple TV logo in the center, in the same glossy finish found on the sides. On the back are the power socket, a HDMI 2.1 port and an Ethernet socket, although it does also have Wi-Fi. However, unlike some of the best streaming devices, it doesn’t come bundled with a HDMI cable – you’ll need to provide this yourself.

As we’ve already mentioned, the revamped Siri remote is one of the big draws of the new Apple TV 4K. The new Siri remote is thinner, but slightly heavier than before, and powered by a rechargeable battery. The circular clickpad at the top of the remote control works in the same way as the touch-sensitive trackpad, allowing you to swipe up, down and left to right to scroll through apps and settings on the Apple TV 4K. Pressing the clickpad will open apps, or pause/restart playback when you’re streaming TV shows, movies or music, while the outer ring can be used to scroll forwards and backwards during playback, enabling you to select a specific scene in a movie or show.

For the first time, the Siri remote has a power button, so you can use it to switch the Apple TV 4K on or off, along with your TV too, and it also now features a back button and a mute button. The Siri button has now been moved to the right-hand edge of the remote.

As we’ve mentioned, the Apple TV 4K (2021) is powered by the A12 Bionic chip, and supports both high-frame-rate HDR and Dolby Vision 4K format, along with Dolby Atmos audio.

Performance

  • High-frame-rate HDR makes sports look smooth and clear
  • You can tweak color balance with your iPhone
  • Siri is fast and efficient

Like most Apple devices, the Apple TV 4K proved extremely easy to set up, and it was recognized by our iPhone as soon as we plugged it in. The iPhone took care of transferring our Apple ID and password to the Apple TV 4K automatically, and we were also impressed by the One Home Screen feature, which mirrors the apps and layout of any existing Apple TV devices in your home.

The overall performance of the Apple TV 4K (2021) was very slick, with no lag when loading or switching apps, and we found Siri was effective at searching for content, even when a query contained multiple parameters – when we asked for comedy movies for children, a number of suitable films, including Paddington 2 and Finding Dory, were displayed at the bottom of the screen within seconds.

When it comes to playing high-frame-rate HDR, there’s currently a limited amount of compatible content available, but we were able to see a clear difference when watching Red Bull TV on the Apple TV 4K (2021) compared to the Apple TV 4K (2017). On the newest Apple TV, Red Bull Straight Rhythm – a fast-paced motorbike supercross event – looked smooth and clear, while was slightly jittery and not as detailed when viewed on the previous iteration.

We found the color balance feature simple to use – after holding our iPhone close to our TV screen with the camera pointed towards it, with the on-screen image cycling through a range of colors, we were presented with a new color profile that was less vivid and slightly more subdued. It’s easy to switch between your original color settings and the new balanced look using the on-screen options.

We were impressed with the redesigned Siri remote: we found the clickpad to be far more accurate than the previous model when it came to scrolling through apps and shows, and were also impressed that the TV could be switched off at the same time as the Apple TV 4K (2021), which means fewer remotes cluttering up the coffee table. The extra weight –  2.25oz / 64g compared to 1.5oz / 45g – is welcome, giving the feel of a more premium build quality.

There are plenty of small but extremely handy features built into the Apple TV 4K (2021) too. For example, if you need to enter text on the Apple TV 4K (2021), such as a password, you can type it on your iPhone rather than messing about trying to select on-screen characters with the remote. You can connect two pairs of Apple AirPods at the same time for private listening, and there’s also multi-user support, so family members with their own AppleID can be added to the device and see their own personalized app, video and music collections.

These features are also available on the Apple TV 4K (2017), and it’s the close attention to detail that makes any iteration of Apple’s streaming box a real pleasure to use.

How to install apps on a Samsung Smart TV – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

In this article, we will explain how to install apps on a Samsung Smart TV with and without an official market. The cornerstone of the Smart TV experience is the display of television programs, films, and other content via the Internet streaming process; streaming content is accessible via the app. Almost all Smart TVs have a selection of preloaded apps, but most Smart TVs allow users to add more.

MUST READ- How to install an application on a Smart TV

The precise steps required to add more apps to a Smart TV may vary from brand to model or from model to model within a brand. There may also be slight changes in the appearance of the on-screen menu from year to year. Here are some examples of how to install apps on a Samsung Smart TV.

If you don’t see an app on your Samsung Smart TV home page (aka Smart Hub) that you want to access, it may be available via Samsung Apps Store.

To find out if the app is available and then add it, follow these steps:

Make sure you have set up a Samsung account. This can be done through the TV System Settings .

How to install apps on a Samsung Smart TV

  1. If you have a Samsung account, click Apps on the menu bar. This will take you to the My Apps screen which shows all the pre-loaded apps, as well as access to apps in other categories, such as News, Most Popular, Videos, Lifestyle, and Entertainment.
  2. If you see an app that is not in My apps but wants to add it, select the app icon. This will take you to the app installation page, which also provides information on what the app does, plus some example screenshots showing how the app works.
  3. If you don’t see the app you want in the official categories tabs, you can see if it’s available in the Samsung Apps store using the search function. To search for an app, select the magnifying glass located in the upper right corner of any app menu screen.
  4. Once you find the desired app, select Install.
  5. After installing the app, you will be asked to open it. If you don’t want to open the app, simply leave the menu and open it later from My apps.

Use the browser

If you can’t find the application in the official market, you can always download it from the web, using the browser you installed by default on your Smart TV, for example, “download chrome apk”, then download and install the app as a normal application.

Or through “sideloading”

Or you can upload all the Android apps on the new Smart TVs by reading this article!

That isn’t to say that Apple devices are cut out of the process. In fact, FaceTime relies on the new iOS 15 operating system — now available to download free — to look and work more like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. In addition to letting you video-chat with people outside Apple’s bubble, FaceTime updates include a new grid view, Portrait mode, the ability to schedule calls and a watch party feature called SharePlay.

Here’s how to join FaceTime calls with iOS 15 no matter what device you’re using.

How to start a FaceTime call with Android or Windows users

The key here isn’t that the FaceTime app is coming to Android and Windows. It’s that you’ll be able to jump on a FaceTime call using a link, so long as the person scheduling or starting the call has an Apple device and an Apple account. If you’re an Apple user and have downloaded iOS 15, here’s how to get a FaceTime call started with people on Android or Windows devices.

Create a FaceTime link on your iPhone to share with others on Android or Windows devices.

1. Open the FaceTime app on your phone.

2. Tap Create Link.

3. A screen will slide up from the bottom that says FaceTime Link. You can click Add Name to enter a name for your chat.

4. On the same screen, you’ll see options to share the link through text, email, Twitter, calendar or other apps you have on your phone. Or, you can copy and paste the link yourself.

5. To join the call yourself, tap the name of the chat you just created, and tap Join.

6. When the Android or Windows user clicks the link, it will take them to a waiting room where you can allow them to join the call by tapping a check next to their name.

How to Watch Live News on Apple TV (For Free) – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Breaking news is something you just have to watch as it happens. Fortunately, the Apple TV lets you get your news fix without a cable subscription. This guide will walk you through the best news apps for watching live news on your Apple TV.

[toc]

Reuters TV: Not your great-great-great grandfather’s news app

News on the Apple TV is only an app away.

A surprisingly strong effort comes from one of the oldest companies in the news business. Reuters got its start 166 years ago when journalists delivered breaking news reports by carrier pigeon. Now the venerable news agency has embraced 21st Century media.

The Reuters TV app launched a few years ago as a subscription service. The company dropped its paywall last year in favor of an ad-supported business model. Some of the advertising appears as company logos on sponsored sections, but most of the ads are traditional thirty or sixty second video spots. Reuters claims that the “premium” ads consume only 5% of viewing time compared to 25% on traditional TV. If even that is too much for you, an in-app subscription will give you an ad-free experience.

Reuters TV lets you choose how much news you have time for.

The app opens in the Reuters Now section. You choose whether you have time for a ten, fifteen, or thirty-minute news report. This is not a rehash of an earlier newscast. Reuters has more than 2,500 journalists around the world producing video reports every day. The ten minutes of Reuters Now you watch during lunch will not be the same ten minutes you watched in the morning. In effect, it is the same experience you get on a traditional newscast but without a news anchor introducing each video. Reuters promises that the app will evolve over time as its algorithms learn what kind of news you prefer watching.

News organized by category will run as a single stream – or you can select a report to watch.

The menu bar lets you navigate between the Reuters Now, Featured, Live, and Settings sections. Featured is home to Reuters’ on-demand reports. Within each topic you can select specific videos or watch the entire topic as a single stream. Some of the topics are sponsored. Microsoft, for example, sponsors the “Race to the Future” technology section.

You can find upcoming live coverage – and breaking news when it happens – on the Reuters TV Live screen.

Reuters does not produce a live stream with anchors introducing pre-produced reports or interviewing other journalists like you will see on other networks. The Live section instead hosts Reuters coverage of specific events. Most of these are press conferences or public addresses by world leaders. During breaking news events, such as the recent Finsbury Park attack in London, the Live section is where you will find live streams from Reuters journalists on the scene. A badge appears next to the Live bar menu item to notify you when a new stream is available

You too can contemplate the infinite possibilities of the Reuters TV Settings screen.

The Settings section lets you toggle between the US and International versions of the app. Reuters may have bigger plans, but right now this looks like a poor decision. The Live and Featured sections are the same in both versions. The only thing that does change is the content in the Reuters Now feed. It would have been much easier for the user if the app had separate menu bar items for Reuters Now US and Reuters Now World. But that is the only flaw in an otherwise solid app.

CBS News: The Tiffany Network goes over the top

Out of all the traditional networks, CBS provides the best news app.

The traditional TV networks, both cable and broadcast, are not cord cutter-friendly. Apps from the cable news channels require a cable subscriber code to activate. Fox’s app only streams a webcam from the studios of its talk radio network. ABC promotes the ability to watch four live streams simultaneously, but most of the streams are not related to news. NBC’s news app only provides on demand reports.

CBS is the only traditional network that gets things right. It was the last network to set up a 24×7 news operation, so CBSN went with a digital-first strategy that skipped cable entirely. CBSN is a pure over-the-top news network that is only available on the web, through CBS News mobile apps, and on home streaming devices like the Apple TV.

Of course, you cannot expect an old network like CBS to change completely. The CBS News app has more advertising than any of the others in this review. Two or three ads will run between programs and during programs’ regular commercial breaks.

The live stream includes programming from CBS New as well as original live reports from CBSN.

The app’s live stream autoplays at launch. Anchors introduce news reports, conduct in-studio interviews, and coordinate breaking news coverage just like any other news network. The news you see is not a rehash or what you get on TV. While some of the reports are rebroadcast from the parent network’s news shows, CBSN’s in-house journalists develop their own reports as well.

The main screen of the CBS News app lets you browse on-demand news reports.

Most of the navigation happens from the CBS News screen rather than the menu bar. Scrolling down you will see recent or popular stories that the network has run. You can also watch reports from CBS’s roster of scheduled news shows like 60 Minutes and Face the Nation.

Browse through the roster of CBS News’ scheduled programming.

The menu bar lets you switch between the CBS News, My Videos, and Search screens. My Videos displays any news reports that you have bookmarked. Just click and hold the remote while video is playing to add it to the list.

Bloomberg: News for the business-minded

If business is your business, then Bloomberg is a must-have app for your Apple TV.

Bloomberg makes its money selling information services to companies on Wall Street rather than from cable fees. But even the rest of us 99-percenters get round-the-clock reporting of the world’s business news.

The app does have an ad-based business model. Ads appear more often than in the Reuters TV app, but not as often as the CBS News app. You will see a brief ad when you launch the live stream and on-demand videos. Every once in a while an ad appears as an on-demand stream transitions from one video to another.

Bloomberg’s live broadcast appears on the Featured screen.

The app opens to the Featured section. This is where you can launch Bloomberg’s live stream. Columns to the right let you navigate through collections of on-demand videos. The collections are an odd jumble of categories, topics, and shows. Why, for example, list content from Hello World when the most recent episode is five months old? The “For You” column is visible even though customization is only available to Bloomberg’s subscribers.

The Shows screen organizes Bloomberg content by… shows.

The menu bar lets you switch between Featured, Shows, and Settings. Bloomberg subscribers can sign-in to their accounts from the Settings screen. If you are not a subscriber, you will never use the Settings screen. The Shows screen, as you would expect, organizes on-demand videos for each of Bloomberg’s scheduled news shows. There are some odd choices here as well. The Bloomberg app lists shows that no longer air on the network. All of you who missed The Spark’s May 2016 report on wastewater beer are in luck. For the rest of us, the stale content leaves a lot to be desired.

The execution may not be perfect. Bloomberg’s unique focus, however, makes this an essential app for anyone who needs to track the latest business news.

Sky News: A global perspective

The Sky News app provides the most news coverage from outside the United States

Apps from international news networks like Al Jazeera, NHK, CBC, DW, and RT will give you a different perspective on the world’s news – and on events in the US. Unfortunately, Apple does not make the apps easy to discover. You will have to use the App Store’s search function to track most of them down.

The Sky News app opens to thumbnails of live and on-demand news reports.

Sky News delivers the most comprehensive coverage out of all of the international apps. The 24-hour news network – Britain’s first – began as a satellite news channel in the 1980s. Only viewers in the United Kingdom see advertising. Sky News International runs video headlines during the commercial breaks, making the Sky News app subscription-free and ad-free.

Sky News broadcasts live through apps, cable, and satellite.

The app opens to the Sky News screen which lists recent news reports for on-demand viewing. A thumbnail in the carousel at the top of the screen includes an option for Sky News’ live stream. You can also find the live stream by navigating through the menu bar to Live, selecting the one live option, and then selecting play. Or you can go to the Categories section, select Live, and guess which one of three options will work. The other two are for the UK and some other unnamed region. That is not the best experience but it’s easy enough to avoid.

Sky News has its priorities. No business or sports but you can get on-demand video of the Queen.

The Categories section has a more useful function: letting you find on-demand news reports by topic. It has separate collections for US, UK, and World news reports as well as technology and entertainment collections. There is even a Royal Family category so you can keep up with those wacky Windsors.

Pluto TV: A dwarf planet’s worth of news

Pluto TV provides convenient access to multiple news streams, but it is not perfect.

Convenience is the Pluto TV app’s big selling point. It consolidates a dozen news channels (along with movies and sports) within one app. But that convenience comes at the cost of the experience.

Pluto TV was founded a few years ago to serve the cord cutter market with an over-the-top TV experience. Its editors originally curated YouTube videos, presenting them within a programming guide-like interface like you would see on a cable box. It now has content deals with major networks that expanded its offerings.

The Pluto TV interface is familiar, but basic controls are missing.

Live video streams from CBS News, Sky News, RT, NewsmaxTV, and Bloomberg deliver the news as it happens. The other news channels, however, are not live. The NBC/MSNBC and Newsy channels consist of curated collections of videos. The streams from Cheddar and CNBC are delayed by as much as five hours.

Pluto TV is an ad-supported rebroadcaster of other networks’ news which creates an uneven experience. You will see ads that CBS and the others run. Pluto TV also inserts its own advertising which can interrupt the program you are watching.

The quality of PlutoTV’s CBS News and other live streams are similar to the standalone apps.

Video quality is not consistent between the channels either. The CBS News channel, for example, is as sharp as what you see in the CBS News app. The feeds from NBC, however, are much softer.

The interface itself needs work as well. You cannot create a favorites list or enter the channel number directly. That means you have to scroll one by one through the entire list to change channels. Even though news channels are grouped together, it is an unnecessary annoyance.

Going Local: Free or convenient, but not both

Local news is the one weakness all of these apps share. The national and international networks are not set up to provide locally-tailored reports. You do have two options for getting local news streaming through your Apple TV.

Streaming local news apps to your Apple TV works, but not well.

The first option is to download your local station’s app on your phone and then stream to the Apple TV. Of course that option does not work for Android owners since AirPlay only works between the Apple TV and an iPhone or iPad. On top of that, the better local apps often require activation with a cable subscription. The remaining local apps make the experience so inconvenient that it may not be worth the hassle.

The second option has an upfront cost of a few hundred dollars: a SiliconDust HDHomeRun networked TV tuner paired with an over-the-air HDTV antenna. The combination will let you stream every local TV station to most devices on your network.

The HDHomeRun and Plex can send local channels to your Apple TV.

Except the Apple TV. SiliconDust has not developed a tvOS app, but third-party apps can bring the feed into your Apple TV. If you already use Plex to stream media across your network, you can integrate the HDHomeRun and stream broadcast TV stations to your Plex app on the Apple TV. But only if you subscribe to the premium Plex Pass service. That gets you a programming guide and access to the Plex DVR service.

Channels is another well-regarded option. It may seem pricey at $25, but that gets you access to the programming guide without a subscription.

Spending several hundred dollars may be excessive just to get local news, but the HDHomeRun option gives you access to sports and anything else broadcast over the air for free. Combined with your favorite news apps, you can turn your Apple TV into a fairly complete replacement for the cable box and bring the future one step closer to home.

Apple unveils the next generation of Apple TV 4K – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Cupertino, California Apple today announced the next generation of Apple TV 4K, delivering high frame rate HDR with Dolby Vision and connecting customers to their favorite content with the highest quality. At the heart of the new Apple TV 4K is the A12 Bionic chip that provides a significant boost in graphics performance, video decoding, and audio processing. And with an all-new design, the Siri Remote makes it even easier to watch shows and movies on Apple TV with intuitive navigation controls. Together with tvOS — the most powerful TV operating system — Apple TV 4K works seamlessly with Apple devices and services to magically transform the living room in ways that everyone in the family will love.

“Apple TV 4K is in a category of its own, leveraging a deep integration of Apple hardware, software, and services that delivers a massive upgrade to any TV for the very best cinematic experience,” said Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “With the A12 Bionic and the all-new Siri Remote, Apple TV 4K lets customers enjoy their favorite shows, movies, and more in the highest quality, with simple and intuitive controls. And of course, Apple TV 4K offers easy access to Apple services, along with thousands of apps on the App Store for even more entertainment options.”

Improved Video Experiences

With A12 Bionic, Apple TV 4K now supports high frame rate HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Dolby Vision video, enabling fast-moving action at 60 frames per second (fps) to play more smoothly and appear more lifelike than ever before.1 Apple is working with leading video providers around the world, including FOX Sports, NBCUniversal, Paramount+, Red Bull TV, and Canal+, as they begin to stream in high frame rate HDR. And with high frame rate support in AirPlay, videos can be displayed in full 60-fps Dolby Vision on the new Apple TV 4K.
