Apple’s AirPlay technology offers several benefits to those with an Apple TV, as well as an iOS device or Mac. You can stream your favorite music, podcasts, movies, TV shows, and more to your Apple TV from your iOS device or Mac. You can also use AirPlay to mirror the screen of your device onto your Apple TV.

Sure, you can easily access iTunes and iCloud content directly on your Apple TV, but streaming through AirPlay can display any audio or video stored locally on your device—including anything you didn’t get from Apple.

You can also stream from third-party apps and services to your Apple TV, so screen mirroring can come in handy for playing games and using other apps from your mobile device on a larger screen.

To stream audio or video, your device must be on the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV. You must also be signed into the same iCloud account across the board. Here’s how to set up and use everything AirPlay has to offer.

Apple released an updated version of the technology in 2018 called AirPlay 2, which vastly improves its capabilities and introduces additional features. AirPlay 2 works with virtually any iPhone model, from the iPhone 5s and SE to the iPhone X and XS. It also supports all iPads starting with the iPad Air and the iPad mini 2, and it’s accessible on the latest iPod touch models.

On the receiving end, AirPlay 2 works with the 4th-generation Apple TV HD released in 2015 and the Apple TV 4K introduced in 2017, as well as a number of smart TVs. If you have the second- or third-generation Apple TV models you can still use the original version of AirPlay. No matter which you have access to, you can still use screen mirroring and stream media.

How to Set Up AirPlay on Apple TV

On your Apple TV, open Settings > AirPlay and make sure AirPlay is turned on. Next, you can set up security measures for accessing AirPlay. Choose the type of access you want to allow—Everyone, Anyone on the Same Network, or Only People Sharing This Home.

You can also choose to require a password in order to stream content through AirPlay, but as long as your Wi-Fi network is protected with a strong password, you should be fine. We also recommend setting AirPlay to allow access…
