Apple has revealed how to get a free year of streaming and access to exclusive shows on its new streaming service Apple TV Plus.

Apple’s yearly iPhone keynote is taking place right now and Tim Cook took a moment out of the exciting product announcements to reveal an exclusive offer for Apple customers.

From today, whenever you buy a product from the Apple Store, you’ll also get access to Apple TV Plus for free for a whole year. 

This means that if you buy an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple TV or Mac right now, you’ll also get access to exclusive Apple TV Plus content. This includes ‘The Morning Show’, ‘Dickinson’, ‘For All Mankind’, ‘The Elephant Queen’ and ‘See’, starring Jason Momoa.

You’ll be able to watch these Apple originals for free on the Apple TV app for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod Touch, Mac and other platforms – both online and offline – as well as at tv.apple.com. The service will also be available on select Samsung smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, LG, Roku, Sony and VIZIO in the near future.

Apple TV Plus will launch on November 1 in over 100 countries with new content added every month. Once your free year is up, the streaming service will set you back just £4.99 a month and can be shared by up to six family members.

Apple is dropping the paywall for some of its Apple TV Plus original TV shows and movies and there’s even a little something on offer for the kids.

The iPhone maker has joined other content providers in opening up the vaults to on-demand content, which usually costs £4.99 a month to access.

In terms of TV series’, Apple is offering Little America, Servant, For All Mankind and Dickinson within the Free For Everyone section of the app. The feature-length film The Elephant Queen is also there, while Snoopy in Space, Helpsters and Ghostwriter are available for younger viewers.

Not everything is available graits though. Apple is keeping the choice nuggs for paying customers. For example, the award-winning The Morning Show (starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon) and Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet (Rob McElhenney) and See (Jason Momoa) remain behind the paywall.

The content is available freely anywhere where the Apple TV app is available. You can get it on iOS, tvOS and macOS devices, as well as smart TVs from Samsung and LG. Amazon Fire TV and Roku streaming devices also offer the app.

Apple’s decision comes as a number of content providers offer free access to video on demand amid the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns around the world. HBO unlocked 500 hours of premium content in the United States, while Roku has launched an ad-supported free channel in the UK with 10,000 films and episodes available on demand. Right now, there seems to be an awful lot of Gordon Ramsey, a few football documentaries, Skins and Homes Under The Hammer. Films include Les Mis, Get Carter and The Wicker Man.

Of course, there’s the brand new Disney Plus streaming service to enjoy, as well as a boosted BBC iPlayer library to settle down in front of during the long, long Easter weekend at home. And do stay home, won’t you?

  Initial Patchstick-based Installation Instructions (Classic Apple TV 2.2 to 3.x, Mac or Windows)

  1. Update your AppleTV to the current version (or the version your plan to use) before starting.  A later update may require redoing the Patchstick installation steps, as standard Apple TV updates may remove it.
  2. Unlock your AppleTV with the free Patchstick Maker application via your Mac or Windows PC.  You will need a USB drive such as a keychain drive (“jump drive”). Once it is unlocked, use your hardware Apple remote to go to the new LaunchMore menu item on your AppleTV, select Scripts, and select Install Rowmote. Connect to your AppleTV in Rowmote and put that old hardware remote away!
  3. If you have Rowmote Pro, you’ll be able to control the mouse and keyboard in apps like Boxee and Firefox.  Installation of those apps is up to you. You have several options:
  1.  You could go the free route and create a new patchstick with atvusb-creator, which will install Boxee and XBMC for you. This open source app, which also supports both Mac and Windows, generally works well, but there’s no technical support available.
  2. The full version of Patchstick provides an automated, menu-based solution for installing apps and comes with technical support.  It costs $40 per year.  You purchase the upgrade on your computer; you then enter your login information into the LaunchMore menu system you installed above, so no further patchsticking is needed. We are not associated with Patchstick; please contact them with any questions or concerns regarding their paid solution.
  3. The AwkwardTV Wiki has details and links to third party apps and plugins if you feel up to manual installations, though it’s a bit hard to navigate.

One of the new Apple TV’s biggest upsides is its game playing ability. Indeed, Apple’s next generation Apple TV will focus heavily on gaming, and even comes equipped with a Wii-inspired motion remote/controller with a touchpad.

Certain developers are already licking their chops at the possibilities of the Apple TV as a gaming hub. In fact, one such developer has already used the now-available Apple TV simulator to run an emulator. This emulator allows for old-school games, like the Sega classic Golden Axe, to be played.

One such example is with an emulator named Provenance. Developed by James Addyman, Provenance is a multi-emulator capable of emulating games from a variety of legacy hardware. Provenance is already running on the Apple TV simulator found inside the latest version of Xcode.

As you can see from his tweet, it only took Addyman 3 hours to get Provenance working on the Apple TV simulator.

Whether or not emulators and other non-approved App Store games will be allowed to be side loaded on the Apple TV 4th generation is still anyone’s guess at this point, but it does make our minds race while considering the possibilities.

Provenance, for example, will allow users to emulate games from the following classic hardware platforms:

• Sega Genesis
• Game Gear/Master System
• Sega CD
• SNES
• NES
• GB/GBC
• GBA

The app is open source, and can be viewed on GitHub.

The fact that Xcode 7 now allows users to side load apps on iOS devices, may make it possible to do the same on the Apple TV and tvOS, but nothing is guaranteed at this point.
