For almost over a year now Apple has had their latest version of their small media player on the market and while still useful the extendability of it isn’t as good as their previous model thanks in large part to the hacking community. The ability alone to install XBMC on the ATV2 is what led me to it initially but since the latest version has hit the market an Apple TV 3 Jailbreak has been non existent. Having since moved onto Google TV I decided to take one last look into the ATV3 and seen some interesting news.

For all intents and purposes the ATV3 is a capable device of streaming media online and through your “Airplay”, with 1080 support and the ability to watch whatever on whichever iOS device you own it’s a nice bonus. Still having been a big supporter of XBMC over the last decade I missed having that software (or any for that matter) capable of being on my ATV3 device. When I searched the other day I was surprised to see all the top page rankings being dominated about the news of an Apple TV 3 Jailbreak.

My initial shock was to see dozens of sites reporting on the upcoming release for a jailbreak mentioning it’s about to be released around the start of February. Having been fairly surprised solely on the fact that a lot of the “experts” had said they’re doubtful it will happen I decided to dig a little deeper. Fortunately I found what I was looking after going to some more credible sources, that being that all these news sites mentioning an ATV3 jailbreak are reporting false news or at least news with no real confirmation one way or another.

With that said for all those people still endlessly hoping I will tell you this now (as of February 17th, 2013), NO JAILBREAK EXISTS.

It sucks I know, the good news though is there are a handful of different alternatives already available that are better designed on the Android platform. Do yourself a favour and purchase a Pivos Xios, Raspberry Pi, or tackle my list here.

Will We Ever See A ATV3 Jailbreak?

Good question. Truth be told it appears no one really knows for sure. Without getting to technical the basis of the Jailbreak needs an exploit to utilize the remaining absinthe exploits out there. Most other iOS devices have this capability and have an injection vector that gets onto the device with root access. That being said there are a few problems facing the ATV3 which is preventing it from getting Jailbroken.

How to watch the free Apple TV+ shows

The TV app is the exclusive destination for Apple TV+, but the TV app is confusing because it blends together purchasable TV shows and movies from the iTunes Store, which you can buy or rent, the integration of content from other apps like Amazon Prime and BBC iPlayer, and Apple TV Channels.

The Watch Now screen does not really distinguish between content that you own and can watch, and just Apple’s general recommendations. Hopefully, the TV app interface will be revamped soon with better features and easier navigation.

But for the time being, the easiest way to get started with Apple TV+ is to open the TV app, go to the Watch Now tab, and then scroll down until you find the circular Apple TV+ channel icon. You may have to scroll down a lot, and the position of this icon on the page changes periodically.

However, once you locate it, tap that and you will be taken to the Apple TV+ channel page. This shows you all of the Apple TV+ shows and movies available to watch, separated by category like comedy, drama or family fun.

Note that tv.apple.com is very stripped down compared to the native TV app on devices, and it only shows Apple original content. Both the website and the Mac TV app lack key features like the ability to skip intro or automatic next episode suggestions when you finish an episode.

What Apple TV+ shows have been renewed for second seasons?

The first batch of Apple TV+ shows were released on November 1st. As Apple is trying to quickly grow its content library, many of these shows were renewed for second seasons before they even premiered.

How to jailbreak the Apple TV 2 (untethered) running iOS 5.3:

1. Download the latest version from the Seas0nPass website.
2. Connect your Apple TV 2 to your Mac using a USB micro cable. (NOTE: You should see a flashing white LED light on the front of the Apple TV.
3. Open the downloaded Seas0nPass.zip file and place it in the “Applications folder”.
4. Go to the Applications folder, right-click on Seas0nPass.app, and select open. If you’re promoted with another open dialogue, click open again.
5. After you have opened Seas0nPass, Select “Create IPSW” and the software will start downloading.
6. After a few minutes you need to press the “Menu+Play/Pause” buttons on your remote control simultaneously for seven seconds.
7. release the “Menu+Play/Pause” buttons, and then the jailbreak should be completed.
8. After the jailbreak is finished, select “Done” on Seas0nPass.
9. Connect your Apple TV 2 to your television using the HDMI port, and plug in the power cable.
10. Set up the Wi-Fi connection and then you should see the “FireCore” logo on the Settings app.

 

This jailbreak method only works for the second generation Apple TV. You can still jailbreak the first generation Apple TV, but the newest Apple TV 3rd generation can’t be unlocked at this time. Since the Apple TV 3 doesn’t have jailbreak capabilities, used Apple TV and Apple TV 2 prices are much more expensive than the Apple TV 3 because of the jailbreak feature. You can still find an Apple TV 2 used models on Amazon, eBay or even Craigslist.

Apple had released the 4K Apple TV with HDR support back in September 2017. It has been well over two years now and the company is yet to refresh the streaming box. There have been hints of Apple working on an Apple TV refresh with an A12 Bionic chip, but no confirmed launch timeframe has leaked as of yet. Now, as per leaker Jon Prosser, a new Apple TV 4K with an A12X Bionic is ready to ship.

Apple has been adding some incredible-looking visuals to the Apple TV with each new software update. Now, the company has added eleven new video wallpapers with the tvOS 13.3.1 update.

Gizmite Design is selling a breakout cable for the Apple TV 4K that makes it easy to access the internal USB port of the streaming device and boot it into DFU mode. The cable will also allow you to jailbreak the Apple TV 4K.

Following on the heels of Apple releasing the latest update to macOS, the company is also releasing a minor software update for the fourth- and fifth-generation Apple TV.

Earlier this year, during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, the company’s unveiled tvOS 12 and outlined the new features coming to the company’s latest set-top boxes.

Apple TV Plus launched on Friday with four original shows. One of them is “See,” a post-apocalyptic fantasy series starring Jason Momoa. It takes place hundreds of years in a future where the remaining humans are blind.

Francis Lawrence, who executive produced the series and directed the first three episodes, talked to Business Insider about the show’s budget and the intricacies involved in its creation.

“We had a think tank with blind consultants and an evolutionary biologist and a survivalist and all these different people come in to brainstorm ideas,” Lawrence said. “How long after civilization had vanished does the story take place and what would things look like and what would remain?”

The Hollywood Reporter reported last month that “See” will cost $240 million for two seasons. Lawrence told Business Insider that the series is expensive but that the budget “got blown out of proportion.”

Before “See,” Lawrence directed three out of four of the “Hunger Games” movies: “Catching Fire,” “Mockingjay — Part 1,” and “Mockingjay — Part 2.” The studio Lionsgate announced in June that it was developing a prequel movie based on series author Suzanne Collins’ upcoming book, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” Lawrence’s three “Hunger Games” movies grossed $2.2 billion worldwide combined.

Lawrence said he would “definitely” return to work on the prequel in development.

Francis Lawrence: I don’t know if I can give you a percentage, but we shot, for the most part, on location for the first five episodes, and episodes seven and eight, as well. We didn’t step on stage until episode six. So we were always in real environments, which would sometimes get augmented with visual effects. Sometimes we would have to make a village a little bigger than we could afford to build, or when we’re shooting inside Queen Kane’s dam, we were inside a huge abandoned paper mill on Vancouver Island. It was so vast we couldn’t age it all appropriately for the time period.

For the most part, everything is real. We’re not doing crowd duplications and things like that, but sometimes we’d have to augment real environments. That and the eye effects. Those were not contacts, those were effects that were done in post.

Apple is giving away one year free of the Apple TV Plus streaming service to customers who buy one of its devices starting in November — but the company insists the offer won’t have a “material impact” on earnings, contrary to a prediction from a prominent Wall Street analyst.

“We do not expect the introduction of Apple TV+, including the accounting treatment for the service, to have a material impact on our financial results,” the tech giant said in a statement to CNBC.

The company was responding to a downgrade of its stock by Goldman Sachs, which predicted the one-year-free Apple TV Plus offer would depress earnings per share for the December 2019 quarter by 16%.

Apple’s share fell as much as 2.7% Friday after Goldman Sachs cut its 12-month price target on Apple’s stock from $187 to $165 per share, citing the firm’s expectation that the free Apple TV Plus offer would have a “material negative impact” on earnings. The stock rebounded slightly after Apple’s statement, closing down 1.9% to $218.75 per share on Sept. 13.

In a research note, Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall said he expected Apple to account for the one-year free trial of Apple TV Plus as a discount of about $60 (which would be the retail cost of Apple TV Plus for one year) in the hardware segment.

“Effectively, Apple’s method of accounting moves revenue from hardware to services even though customers do not perceive themselves to be paying for [Apple] TV+,” Hall wrote in the note, released late Thursday. The analyst cited Apple’s previous accounting methods for services like Apple Maps and the Siri voice assistant, which are included with its hardware products.

Earlier this week, Apple announced that Apple TV Plus will launch Nov. 1 in over 100 countries and regions, priced at $4.99 per month (with a seven-day free trial) for existing customers and free for 12 months with the purchase of any iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch or Mac.

Apple is premiering nine original shows on Apple TV Plus when the service launches, including “The Morning Show,” a drama starring and executive produced by Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, and starring Steve Carell; “See,” a drama starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard, set 600 years in the future after a virus has decimated humanity; and “For All Mankind,” an alternate-history series from Ronald D.
