Apple Arcade launched with close to 100 titles and the service is seeing new games added regularly. Follow along with our guide on the latest from Apple’s gaming service.

You can learn more about and download all the new games by heading to the Arcade tab in the App Store, then swipe down to the very bottom and tap “See All Games.” The newest games are listed at the top.

If you haven’t signed up yet, Apple Arcade is available free for the first month, then $5/month for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, and Apple TV. PS4 and Xbox wireless controllers are also now compatible with Apple devices and select titles.

For almost over a year now Apple has had their latest version of their small media player on the market and while still useful the extendability of it isn’t as good as their previous model thanks in large part to the hacking community. The ability alone to install XBMC on the ATV2 is what led me to it initially but since the latest version has hit the market an Apple TV 3 Jailbreak has been non existent. Having since moved onto Google TV I decided to take one last look into the ATV3 and seen some interesting news.

For all intents and purposes the ATV3 is a capable device of streaming media online and through your “Airplay”, with 1080 support and the ability to watch whatever on whichever iOS device you own it’s a nice bonus. Still having been a big supporter of XBMC over the last decade I missed having that software (or any for that matter) capable of being on my ATV3 device. When I searched the other day I was surprised to see all the top page rankings being dominated about the news of an Apple TV 3 Jailbreak.

My initial shock was to see dozens of sites reporting on the upcoming release for a jailbreak mentioning it’s about to be released around the start of February. Having been fairly surprised solely on the fact that a lot of the “experts” had said they’re doubtful it will happen I decided to dig a little deeper. Fortunately I found what I was looking after going to some more credible sources, that being that all these news sites mentioning an ATV3 jailbreak are reporting false news or at least news with no real confirmation one way or another.

With that said for all those people still endlessly hoping I will tell you this now (as of February 17th, 2013), NO JAILBREAK EXISTS.

It sucks I know, the good news though is there are a handful of different alternatives already available that are better designed on the Android platform. Do yourself a favour and purchase a Pivos Xios, Raspberry Pi, or tackle my list here.

Will We Ever See A ATV3 Jailbreak?

Good question. Truth be told it appears no one really knows for sure. Without getting to technical the basis of the Jailbreak needs an exploit to utilize the remaining absinthe exploits out there. Most other iOS devices have this capability and have an injection vector that gets onto the device with root access. That being said there are a few problems facing the ATV3 which is preventing it from getting Jailbroken.

Apple announced two streaming TV services during a press conference at the Steve Jobs theater in Cupertino on Monday.

The first is called Apple TV Channels and will offer a bundle of content from popular services such as HBO and Showtime and make it easy to access those alongside existing content you might already have through a cable TV subscription.

There’s also a second service called Apple TV+ which includes original content created by Apple and its partners. Apple TV+ will launch this fall, but Apple did not say how much it will cost.

The new Apple TV services put Apple in direct competition of other established player like Hulu, Netflix and Amazon. Disney, AT&T and NBCUniversal all plan to release their own streaming services either this year or early next year.

The focus of Apple TV+ will be original programming made by and starring big-name actors, producers and directors including JJ Abrams, Steven Spielberg, and Jennifer Aniston. But so far, it seems like Apple TV+’s selection will be far more limited than what you can find in Netflix or another service.

Here’s the breakdown of Apple’s new TV services.

Apple TV Channels

Apple TV Channels includes Epix, HBO, Showtime, Starz and others. Users will need to subscribe to each channel, but Apple did not say how much it will cost for each service or if it will offer a package that includes all of them at a discount.

“For some of us, the big bundle is more than we need, so we designed a new TV experience where you can pay for only the channels you want all in one app,” Apple’s Peter Stern said during Apple’s press conference. “Watch everything on-demand and ad-free.”

Some of this isn’t new: Apple TV already lets people connect their cable provider into the Apple TV app and, using single sign-on, automatically login to apps that support streaming if you also pay for cable.

A new home screen inside a new Apple TV app will serve as a launchpad for finding TV shows and movies to watch, and it will make recommendations it thinks you’ll like. The Apple TV app is already available on iPad, iPhone and Apple TV, but the company will also bring it to Macs this spring. It will also launch on Vizio, Sony, LG and Samsung smart TVs, as well as Roku and Amazon Fire TV boxes.

Apple TV Channels and the new Apple TV app will launch through a software update in May. It will be available in more than 100 countries.

Apple also announced Apple TV+, an ad-free subscription streaming service that will be home to its library of original content. This is the service that puts it head-to-head with similar offerings from Amazon and Netflix.

Developers have been digging into the Apple TV App Store data in the absence of category listings and a Top Charts section on Apple’s newly launched version of its media player device, which now, for the first time ever, has opened up to third-party applications. Apple had “hundreds” of applications live at the time of the TV App Store’s launch, though apparently not enough to build out dedicated category pages or rankings at that time. But these features will soon launch, we understand.

In the meantime, according to a number of unofficial sources, we can get a glimpse into which apps are finding early success on the TV App Store, including, not surprisingly, games and various video-related apps, for the most part.

It’s difficult to access this data today, because there’s no official means to do so. Not only does Apple not yet provide rankings, trusted third-party App Store analytics firms like App Annie don’t have insight into the Apple TV App Store, either.

App Annie told us that it’s currently unable to pull data related to which iOS apps have been optimized for Apple TV, for instance.

That has led a few developers to hack their own version of the App Store’s Top Charts.

One, Steve Troughton-Smith, pulled a static snapshot of the data just out of curiosity over the weekend by spoofing the Apple TV headers when accessing web chart data. This data pull indicated that the Top Paid and Top Grossing apps tended to be dominated by games, though a handful of video-related apps, like a Plex client, or utilities, like Carrot Weather or AirVideo, were also gaining ground.

In addition, Apple TV apps appear to be priced higher than iOS apps, 9to5Mac reported, noting that it was common for apps to be in the $5 to $10 range, and very few priced at $0.99 as on the iOS App Store.

However, Troughton-Smith’s data only showed the TV App Store at one moment in time. Since then, other charts have emerged to offer “live” data.

For example, developer Jonas Boserup has posted a list of the Top Paid, Free and Grossing apps in the U.S. Apple TV App Store, which again shows popular games riding up the charts, alongside apps for watching videos, and even a good handful of “workout” apps – something that could point to the potential for the “Health & Fitness” category to do well on the TV App Store in the future.

Meanwhile, Slide to Play has published its own list of Top tvOS apps, including breakdowns by category.

According to its data, which is refreshed daily, there were 1,025 total apps live on the Apple TV App Store as of last night.

Seas0nPass is a new jailbreak utility designed specifically for the second generation Apple TV (2010). It’s comparable to utilities like PwnageTool. I’ve used both and I personally find Seas0nPass to make the process much simpler when it comes to the Apple TV. Not only does it jailbreak 4.1.1 (4.2.1), it offers a pretty easy tethered boot mode as well. Hit the jump for a walkthrough on how to jailbreak the Apple TV 2 using Seas0nPass.

For this example, I’ll be jailbreaking an Apple TV 2 running iOS 4.2.1 (4.1.1), which requires a tethered boot. Here is what you’ll need in order to jailbreak your Apple TV –

Get an iPhone SE with Mint Mobile service for $30/mo

• A Mac running the most current version of iTunes
• Newest version of Seas0nPass
• A micro-USB cable

Once you’ve got all the above, we’re ready to start.

Jailbreak your Apple TV

1. After you’ve downloaded Seas0nPass, open it and save it.
2. Place it in your dock, you don’t have to but I’ve done this as it makes it easy to access for tethered boots.
3. Open Seas0nPass.
4. First you’ll want to click “Create IPSW”.
5. This process will take a second, but once it’s complete, it will prompt you to plug your Apple TV into your computer via USB and boot it into DFU mode by holding down the play and menu buttons on your AppleTV remote for 7 seconds. You can tell it worked when the light on your Apple TV blinks rapidly. After that, it’s ok to release the buttons. Make sure you don’t have your power cable plugged in for this part.
6. Seas0nPass will recognize that your Apple TV is in DFU and do the rest on its own. You’ll see it open and restore in iTunes and navigate itself to the firmware bundle it created.
7. If all goes as planned, you should get a message saying your jailbreak was successful. You can now move on to perform a tethered boot.

Perform a tethered boot

1. Launch Seas0nPass again if you had already closed it out.
2. This time choose “Boot Tethered”.
3. Seas0nPass will prompt you to connect via USB and put your Apple TV back into DFU again, same as earlier.
4. After it performs a tethered boot, it will reboot in 10 seconds. In those 10 seconds, you’ll need to reconnect your Apple TV’s power cable and HDMI cord. (You can remove the USB cable now.) If you don’t do it fast enough, don’t panic. Simply repeat the tethered boot process.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Apple’s flagship shows See and The Morning Show aren’t included. It still wants you to subscribe to its £4.99/$4.99-per-month service, natch! You can, however, watch those for free by signing up to the Apple TV+ seven-day free trial.

How to watch Apple TV+ shows for free

Right now a growing number of services, such as DIRECTV NOW, Hulu, and PlayStation Vue, all offer locals and this year will even stream local NFL games on your phone! You can also watch Thursday night games from FOX on Amazon Prime this year. You will need to be an Amazon Prime member to watch them. (Unless you use an antenna.)

Apple this week issued a new security update that addresses a zero-day vulnerability enabling iOS users to jailbreak their devices.

The company has patched CVE-2020-9859, a memory consumption issue that can result in arbitrary code execution with kernel privileges.

The fix was made in iOS 13.5.1 and iPadOS 13.5.1 for iPhone 6s and later, iPad Air 2 and later, iPad mini 4 and later and iPod touch 7th generation. The same bug was also repaired in macOS Catalina 10.15.5 and macOS High Sierra 10.13.6; tvOS 13.4.6 for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD; and watchOS 6.2.6 for Apple Watch Series 1 and later.

The Apple jailbreak made available last month by the Unc0ver hacking group after the vulnerability was discovered by one of its members, @Pwn20wnd. Jailbreaks are hotly anticipated events for certain tech enthusiasts and security researchers because they allow them to circumvent protections in order to probe more deeply into their devices, and customize them or add programs. However, they can sometimes also expose security issues — although on its official website, the Unc0ver group has said that its jailbreak does not introduce any new vulnerabilities.
