Starting this November, Apple is joining the ranks of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video with the launch of its own original movies and TV shows for the new streaming service Apple TV+.

Chances are, the $14.99 per month price tag will be worth it — after all, Apple reportedly spent $6 billion on its lineup. Money talk aside, the company made sure to invest in all sorts of projects, ranging from drama and comedy series to documentaries and beloved reboots. On top of that, plenty of A-list favorites — Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Momoa, Samuel L. Jackson — are set to star in Apple’s new shows and movies.

To get a better idea of what you can expect from Apple TV+ (which you can watch on the Apple TV app), here’s a full list of all the confirmed shows and movies that will be featured on the streaming service:

The Morning Show

Premiere Date: November 1

Synopsis: Inspired by the book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV by Brian Stelter, the new drama series will center around what happens after co-anchor Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) is fired amidst a sexual misconduct case. Meanwhile, The Morning Show‘s other co-host, Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston), is threatened when reporter Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) seeks to take her place.

Synopsis: This science fiction web series, starring Joel Kinnaman and Michael Dorman, asks the question: What would’ve happened if the 1960s space race between the United States and Soviet Union would’ve gone further? In this story, the U.S.S.R. beats the U.S.A.in putting a man on the moon, which has a domino effect on politics and the space program alike. Variety claims that of all the original series launching on Apple TV on November 1, “For All Mankind is by far the strongest.”

ESPN today rolled out a new version of its Apple TV app that introduces the ability to watch four live simultaneous streams which can be displayed on the screen at the same time. The feature takes advantage of Apple TV’s multicasting support – something that a few other apps have already introduced, including most recently, ABC News. MLB At Bat had also rolled out a split screen viewing mode last year; while Fox Sports and Canal in France offer something similar, too.

Multiple streams are ideal for live sports. They let viewers keep up with several games at once without having to switch back and forth. This is a problem that television sets first tried to solve back in the day with picture-in-picture viewing modes, but the Apple TV app offers a more modern solution.

The ESPN app itself offers a variety of different configurations for viewing the multiple streams. You can view all four in a grid pattern, where each square is the same size. Or you can click to make one window go fullscreen, while others jet off to the side. There’s also a 2-up mode, 3-up mode, and picture-in-picture mode.

After adding the streams you want to track, you can change the layout around, flip between audio streams, and move back and forth between fullscreen and multicasting mode using gestures.

As for content, ESPN’s app lets you choose from over 30 live events streaming across ESPN networks, it says, as well as its digital-only streams, which you tap on to add to your grid.

There is one notable caveat to using the new app, though – you must have a pay TV subscription use it. The ESPN Apple TV app requires users authenticate with their pay TV provider’s credentials – meaning this is not a solution for cord cutters. That may change in the future, however, as Disney-owned ESPN has announced plans to introduce its own streaming service for sports next year.

Some people may have their Apple TV set up in a room where the TV in question isn’t attached to an aerial or satellite dish, in which case they may be looking for a way to watch and maybe record live TV.

It is possible to watch live TV on the Apple TV, although in our experience the quality isn’t as good.

There are a few apps you can use.

On the newer Apple TV models you can download an app called TVPlayer from the App Store. This app offers a TV schedule that makes it easy to select the channel and programme you wish to watch. It also offers an OnDemand service – but note: this is not UK channels, and it is a premium service that you will have to pay extra for.

However, it’s no Freeview swap-in. The channel line-up includes BBC 1, 2 and 4, as well as Channels 4 and 5 but there’s hardly any of the extra channels offered – no ITV 2 or ITV 3, for example. Notably, you don’t even get the same range of channels as you do by streaming live TV for free at the TV Player website or on the TV Player iPhone/iPad app, where the selection more closely mirrors Freeview. We’re guessing this is because of licensing issues, something that comes with the postscript that this situation is likely to change.

Some top-name premium channels are available via the TV Viewer app, such as History, Discovery and Cartoon Network, although to access them you’ll need to pay £4.99 a month. This will also unlock the Catch-up feature, although this is limited to a handful of the aforementioned premium channels and doesn’t feature the likes of BBC or ITV programmes.

Alas, even if you pay-up, you’ll find all the channels are streamed in standard definition (SD). In other words, they look slightly fuzzy on HD tellies that are the norm in most living rooms nowadays (although some tellies cope better with the lack of definition than others). This is true of the live streams as well as catch-up. Incidentally, it’s streaming-only within the app, and there’s no option to download content, which can help avoid buffering if you’ve a slow net connection.

How to watch live TV with the TVPlayer app

To watch live TV using the TVPlayer app on the Apple TV follow these steps:

1. Download and open the TVPlayer app on your Apple TV.
2. Along the top of the interface you will see the following options: Live TV, Catchup, Channels, Guide, Account. Scroll over to Live TV.
3. Scroll through the list of UK channels to pick the one you want to watch.
4. If you want to consult the guide first, scroll across to Guide and select that.
5. Find the programme you wish to watch (you can’t select something in the future or past).

As we noted, we found the streaming quality to be poor.

Kodi is a hugely popular open source media player available for just about any device and operating system and offers something slightly different to standard media players. Customisation is key, and thanks to a number of third-party add-ons, Kodi can be used to watch live TV, catch up on the latest TV shows and listen to music.

While it’s not available to download via the App Store, we show you how you can install Kodi on your second-, fourth- and fifth-generation Apple TV. We would also include instructions for first- and third-generation Apple TV users but sadly, it’s not possible at the time of writing.

What is Kodi?

Formerly known as XBMC (or Xbox Media Centre), Kodi is a completely free open source media player available for just about any operating system or hardware platform including iOS, tvOS, Mac, Android, Windows and even the Amazon Fire TV stick just to name a few, although it’s not always easy to install.

In its simplest form, it allows users to play videos, music, podcasts directly from the internet, as well as media files from local and network storage. Granted, users can already use AirPlay to stream content to the Apple TV via an iOS device, but Kodi offers something slightly different.

It’s the level of customisation that makes Kodi what it is. Users can customise the skin of the app, and more importantly, a variety of add-ons are available enabling extra functionality. With the right add-ons, users can stream content via the likes of Amazon Prime Instant Video, Pandora, Spotify, and YouTube.

There are even a handful of apps that provide Kodi users with live TV complete with an EPG and PVR support. We don’t, of course, condone the use of pirated TV streams, but we can’t ignore that it is one of the main desires of those installing Kodi on an Apple TV.

How to install Kodi on the Apple TV 4K

When Apple unveiled the Apple TV 4K in September 2017, there was only one physical change to the device: the removal of the USB-C port, which was used for the below method of installing Kodi on a fourth-gen Apple TV.

Many assumed that would be the end of Kodi on the Apple TV, but where there’s a will, there’s a way – although this one may cost you a few dollars and requires a Mac running macOS Mojave.

Websites like this one will register your Apple TV’s UDID (unique number) with a paid developers account, allowing you to install Kodi on your Apple TV by ‘official’ developer means.

In full disclosure, we haven’t used the service linked above so can’t comment on its reliability, and we have our suspicions that this may be against Apple’s T&C’s, but it’s still a way to get Kodi on the fifth-gen Apple TV for those that want it.

Apple TV game developers can now force players to use a game controller if their title isn’t suitable for the Siri Remote. Until now, all titles have had to be compatible with the Siri Remote, which makes it difficult to play more complex games.

This requirement meant that games that needed various buttons for different actions had to assign them to different areas of the Siri Remote’s touchpad. Players then have to remember what each area is for, and try to ensure they hit it in the right spot.

As you can see in the photo below from TouchArcade, which shows the control system for Modern Combat 5 on tvOS, there are more than five different actions assigned to that tiny touchpad. This delivers a poor in-game experience.

As a result, tvOS games with control systems like these tend to get bad reviews, because they’re just not fun to play with the Siri Remote. But going forward, developers can force players to use a game controller with physical buttons instead.

“When designing a tvOS game, you may require the use of an MFi game controller, but where possible you should also support the Siri Remote,” Apple’s guidelines read, as highlighted in the tweet below.

That means they don’t have to make their games compatible with the Remote. If they’re just not suitable, they can eliminate it altogether for a greater experience. That means it might be time to invest in a controller if you haven’t already!

Apple on Monday released iOS 13.5.1 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. The release notes only mention security updates, and the update itself was 77.5MB on my iPhone 11 Pro Max. 

Shortly after releasing the update, Apple updated its security updates page with more information about what exactly was fixed in today’s update. Jailbreak fans will be disappointed to learn, Apple has already patched the exploit that is used by the Unc0ver jailbreak. 

Jailbreaking an iPhone gives users root access to the entire iPhone OS, allowing them to install tweaks and other apps outside of Apple’s App Store. 

The Unc0ver jailbreak was released on May 24 and was the first exploit that worked on a current version of iOS in the last few years. 

Apple didn’t mention any other bug fixes, performance improvements, or security updates included with iOS 13.5.1. 

If you’ve used the Unc0ver tool to jailbreak your iOS device, installing iOS 13.5.1 will remove it and block you from jailbreaking it again.

This page describes an edition of the game that has been officially discontinued. This edition is no longer updated or available for download.

Minecraft: Apple TV Edition was the version of Bedrock Edition designed to run on the Apple TV. It was announced on October 27, 2016, officially released on December 19, 2016, alongside Fire TV Edition, and discontinued on September 24, 2018.[2][3] The release of the Apple TV Edition coincided with the Ender Update. It was the last Bedrock Edition to have an “Edition” subtitle as it did not receive the Better Together Update. It was previously unclear if or when the Apple TV Edition would be updated, due to a bug.[4][5] The version was officially discontinued with a message provided via the in-game patch notes and removed from the Apple TV Store on September 24, 2018.[6]

The Apple TV Edition did not include a beta edition. It was announced and released at the same time.

For a limited time[more information needed], it came with seven pieces of DLC (Holiday 2015, Town Folk, and City Folk skin packs, along with the Plastic, Natural, Cartoon, and Festive 2016 mash-ups). Apple TV Edition moved from individual pieces of DLC to content in the Minecraft Marketplace. While players could no longer purchase Minecoins as of September 24, 2018, they could continue to use remaining Minecoins to purchase and use content in the Marketplace.

Discontinuation[edit]

On September 24, 2018, Apple TV Edition was removed from the Apple TV store and the following message was broadcasted via the in-game patch notes. The patch notes were localized in all supported languages with local numbers for Apple Support included for each region/country.

We’re grateful to the Apple TV community for their support but we need to reallocate resources to the platforms that our players use the most.
