ESPN today rolled out a new version of its Apple TV app that introduces the ability to watch four live simultaneous streams which can be displayed on the screen at the same time. The feature takes advantage of Apple TV’s multicasting support – something that a few other apps have already introduced, including most recently, ABC News. MLB At Bat had also rolled out a split screen viewing mode last year; while Fox Sports and Canal in France offer something similar, too.

Multiple streams are ideal for live sports. They let viewers keep up with several games at once without having to switch back and forth. This is a problem that television sets first tried to solve back in the day with picture-in-picture viewing modes, but the Apple TV app offers a more modern solution.

The ESPN app itself offers a variety of different configurations for viewing the multiple streams. You can view all four in a grid pattern, where each square is the same size. Or you can click to make one window go fullscreen, while others jet off to the side. There’s also a 2-up mode, 3-up mode, and picture-in-picture mode.

After adding the streams you want to track, you can change the layout around, flip between audio streams, and move back and forth between fullscreen and multicasting mode using gestures.

As for content, ESPN’s app lets you choose from over 30 live events streaming across ESPN networks, it says, as well as its digital-only streams, which you tap on to add to your grid.

There is one notable caveat to using the new app, though – you must have a pay TV subscription use it. The ESPN Apple TV app requires users authenticate with their pay TV provider’s credentials – meaning this is not a solution for cord cutters. That may change in the future, however, as Disney-owned ESPN has announced plans to introduce its own streaming service for sports next year.

The free year subscription does not come with an Apple Tv no. Its just the subscription, not a free Apple TV box.

You can use the subscription on an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac, you don;t absolutely need an Apple TV.

Also some newer Smart TVs have the Apple Tv App built in, and you can use the subscription there too.

It appears that the validation will be done with device serial numbers and online activation, making receipts irrelevant.

Apple has not said where online. It will likely be on the eligible device, in the Tv App when you sign up for it and not actually on any website.

It is not limited, any new purchase except Apple Watches, qualifies.

Apple today announced its Best of 2018 selections – its annual, editorial list of what it considers the best content across its App Store and iTunes, along with its top charts of the most downloaded apps and games fo the year. As in other years, Apple selected a “best” app and game for each platform, including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac. It also rounded-up several favorite Apple Watch apps, but didn’t award a winner.

The best app of 2018 on iPhone was the iPhone version of the popular Procreate drawing app for iPad, Procreate Pocket.

Meanwhile, the top iPad app was Froggipedia, an AR app that lets you virtually dissect a frog so you don’t have to actually dissect a frog.

Both apps showcase technologies Apple aims to promote. In Procreate Pocket’s case, it’s the iPhone companion to an Apple Pencil-powered app on iPad. On the iPhone, it instead uses 3D Touch support for painting with your finger. Froggipedia turns an Apple Pencil into the scalpel to dissect a virtual frog.

On Mac, the top app was image editor Pixelmator Pro, and top Apple TV app was the big-screened version of workout app Sweat, whose creator Kayla Itsines also showed up at WWDC this year to lead a special session.

The top games this year were: Donut County (iPhone), Gorogoa (iPad), The Gardens Between (Mac) and Alto’s Odyssey (Apple TV) – the latter which also won an Apple Design Award earlier this year.  

Showcasing their somewhat secondary status, Apple Watch apps didn’t get a “best of” pick for app and game, but a small group got a shoutout from Apple as being “favorites.”

This includes: WaterMinder, Lifesum, 10% Happier, Carrot Weather, FunGolf GPS, Swing Tennis Tracker, Slopes, App in the Air, Overcast, and Just Press Record.

In addition to its “Best of” apps, Apple also identified 2018 app trends, which included “self-care” apps in the non-gaming space, and Battle Royale-style gaming (e.g. Fortnite and PUBG Mobile) as the game trend.

Notably, a self-care app – meditation app Calm – won the best iPhone app of 2017, so this is trend that’s not dying down. Though not a “Best of” pick on iPhone or iPad, Apple did give a shout-out to wellness and self-care apps, noting that Fabulous, Shine, 10% Happier and Headspace had a good year.

While its “Best of” selections were editorially chosen, Apple also unveiled its year-end “Top Charts” across iPhone and iPad, which were separated by both apps and games (free and paid).

These are the most downloaded app of 2018. The lists still show Facebook, YouTube, Google, and other entertainment apps dominating the top free charts.

Plex, PlexConnect and OpenPlex are running on Apple TV 7.2.2 software and macOS 10.12.2 Sierra (final release). On December 12, 2016, Apple released Apple TV 7.2.2 software (build number 8015). The predecessor, Apple TV 7.2.1, was released almost a year ago, on Februar 25, 2016. I positively tested it on an Apple TV 3rd generation. Apple TV 7.2.2 improves general performance and stability compared to Apple TV 7.2.1.

Plex, PlexConnect and OpenPlex are working on macOS 10.12.2 Sierra and Apple TV 7.2.2 software:

Re-installation of the ‘trailer.cer’ profile:

If you want to install Apple TV 7.2.2 software for the very first time, there could be the need to restore your Apple TV, meaning all added profile were deleted. Hence, re-install the certificate file to get PlexConnect running again. I used the same certificate file I generated for Apple TV 6 software and installed the profile following ‘PlexConnect: Installling Certificates On Apple TV Without USB‘. Finally, I configured the DNS of the Apple TV 3 to the IP address of my Plex Media Server according to the GitHub DNS configuration guide and PlexConnect works as good as before the update.

Despite Apple originally referring to the Apple TV as a ‘hobby’, that all changed with the introduction of the fourth-gen Apple TV, followed by the Apple TV 4K back in 2017. Why? It features tvOS, an operating system that brings a whole new dimension to Apple TV.

It’s even better news for us in the UK, as Apple never really catered to UK Apple TV users in the first few years of the Apple TV’s life, offering a small selection of apps compared to our US counterparts, but now UK companies – and crucially the TV channels – have started to offer their own apps, so you can pretty much find everything you want to on the Apple TV.

Apple TV Plus has been out for a while now after its launch at the latter end of last year, and its glitzy entrance into the dog-eat-dog streaming market hasn’t been easy. Despite the company’s substantial financial heft, and strong original launch shows like The Morning Show, the platform doesn’t come close to the big streamers right now, like Netflix and Amazon Prime. It even has a hard time against the other fresh platforms, like Disney Plus and HBO Max.

Then again, the busy flow of new Apple TV Plus shows hasn’t ceased, with this year bringing the likes of Chris Evans drama Defending Jacob, and videogame-themed Mythic Quest from the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creators. The future of movies on the platform is exciting, too: Apple is backing a $150 million+ movie from Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, according to reports.

Apple TV Plus has plenty shows and movies coming up, a lot of them featuring big-name stars. Take the Scorsese-directed Killers of the Flower Moon, for instance, a ‘large-scale Western’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

In terms of upcoming shows that are worth knowing about, here are a few highlights. The Shrink Next Door is based on the 2019 podcast of the same name, and it’ll star Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd. Foundation is a sci-fi series based on the books by Isaac Asimov, and starring Chernobyl’s Jared Harris and Lee Pace. There are already plenty of Apple Arcade games on PC. The library boasts a wide variety of hand-picked games that you can access through its subscription service. While the roaster of games features games from the likes of SEGA, Cartoon Network, and the Lego games, the service also has a bunch of indie studios like Finji, Annapurna Interactive, Gian Squid, ustwo games, and more. 

Many of the games in Apple Arcade are strictly available on the subscription service only, but many have made their way to PC after a short time in the arcade. Similar to the Epic Store’s exclusivity, some of the games in the arcade are exclusive to Apple for a short period of time, but unlike Epic’s standard year wait, Apple Arcade’s time period can vary. 

Most of the games released on both PC and through Apple Arcade have around a month or two of a waiting period. Take Simogo’s Sayonara Wild Hearts as an example. That released on Apple Arcade on October 8 then made its way to Steam on December 12.
