That is not true at all. All advertising strictly shows that the service is for Apple originals, and this is also shown on the webpage. Nowhere has it ever stated that the service entitles one to the full contents of the iTunes store. Furthermore, in order to subscribe you would need to go into the Apple TV channels section and select Apple TV Plus, and you can easily browse what the service has to offer before signing up.

Other services have licensed content on top of originals, however they still don’t offer access to a full marketplace, equivalent to iTunes, and cost even more than this service. The fact is you did not do your due diligence to see what this was beforehand and are now coming to complain based on that decision, which doesn’t hold any weight.

We knew virtually everything there was to know about the service ahead of its launch (although Apple took its sweet time doling out all of the relevant details), but now that Apple TV+ has officially launched, we have also gotten a look at the terms and conditions, which you’re going to want to read before you start your free trial:

• Offer is available for a limited time only.
• Offer cannot be combined with other free trials or offers for Apple TV+. Only one offer per Family, regardless of number of devices purchased. You can share your 1 year free Apple TV+ with up to 5 other family members via Family Sharing.
• Redeem your 1 year free in the Apple TV app starting November 1, 2019. Make sure your eligible device is running the latest iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, or macOS.
• Offer must be claimed in the Apple TV app within 3 months after first setting up your new device. To see the offer appear, you will need to sign in with your Apple ID on your new device. If you’ve purchased your new device before the launch of Apple TV+ on November 1, you will have 3 months starting November 1 to redeem.
• Upon claiming the offer, you commit to a $4.99/month subscription that starts immediately after the 1 year free and automatically renews until cancelled. You can cancel at any time in Settings at least a day before each renewal date. • “Play The Office”: Just ask Siri to play any TV show or movie. Siri will present you with a list of places where you can stream or buy the media.
• “Play The Office Season 6 Episode 4”: You can get as specific as you want.
• “Jump forward and back”: You can scrub as much as you want without using the finicky touchpad. You can say rewind five seconds or forward 10 minutes and Siri will do it for you.
• “Who stars in this?”: How often do you wonder who the guest actor is in your favorite shows? Next time, just ask Siri and she will show you a list of the cast.

2. Siri Remote Shortcuts

Apple TV’s Siri Remote looks fairly basic, with just six buttons and a touchpad. But almost every button has a double-click and a touch-and-hold action. This means that there’s a lot of hidden functionality here, such as:

• Quickly view audio outputs: Do you frequently switch between your headphones and speakers? Instead of navigating to the info panel, just hold the Play/Pause button to see a list of all available outputs.
• Switch between apps: Double-click the Home/TV button and you’ll enter the App Switcher that’s just like the one on iOS. You can swipe up to quit an app.
• Instant screensaver: When you’re on the Home screen, just press the Menu button once to reveal one of the gorgeous screensavers.
• Time stamps: When you’re watching something, tapping once on the touchpad will reveal the scrubber with the current timestamp. But tap once again and the timestamps will change to the current time and the end time. Next time you’re watching a movie and want to know when you’ll be done, use this trick.

One of the most popular posts I’ve written is about jailbreaking your Apple TV – why you’d want to and how to do it. Written three years ago, the Apple TV was either peaking or had already begun its decent as the clear choice for a video streaming device that could also run XBMC (now known as Kodi) when jailbroken. At the time the Apple TV 3 was just coming out and there was not yet a successful path to gaining root, so people were left to either grab a generation 2 model off eBay or continue to wait. The jailbreak process never came to the generation 3 model and the popularity of the device as a choice for a home theater PC faded. 

A major problem with jailbreaking your Apple TV is that you’ll no longer get the standard software updates for the device. That means once you gain root access, the Apple TV will never improve, even as new features and services are added. You could always redo the entire process but that’s a pain. This was OK before there were such a large number of services available but now with HBO Go, an upcoming NFL season ticket service, etc. it’s hard to justify keeping it around just for streaming media from your PC – especially when there are alternatives.

I’ve been using my Apple TV 2 – jailbroken with Kodi – for over 3 years now as my primary streaming device. I’ve upgraded the iOS version a couple of times to gain new services like HBO Go but it’s still not at the latest version. Lately my device has been unable to play video through HBO Go, probably due to the jailbreaking process. The fix is to factory reset the device but that would mean jailbreaking it yet again. Adding to my hesitation to do so, Kodi has announced that starting with the current version 15, the Apple TV will no longer be supported as a viable device. The whole point of me jailbreaking the Apple TV has always been to run XBMC/Kodi and now it’s not supported anymore! 

But I’m over it. The Apple TV can still exist as it does for me today and move to the basement TV or whatever. It’s time to upgrade.

I still want to use Kodi but now I don’t have to compromise thanks to a larger number of supported devices – most of which don’t require jailbreaking. There are a few standout options:

• Amazon Fire TV [FireOS]
• Amazon Fire TV Stick [FireOS]
• Google Nexus Player [Android TV]
• Nvidia Shield TV [Android TV]

These are all Android based devices but the difference is whether or not they run Android TV or not and how difficult it is to load the Kodi app. If you want to use the device for all kinds of services other than Kodi (let’s be honest, just HBO Go really) then you don’t…

There’s more though—the YouTube app for Apple TV gives you access to any TV show or movie you’ve bought through Google Play Movies & TV.

There’s no official Google Movies & TV app for Apple TV, but you can find all your purchased content in the YouTube app: go to My YouTube using the top menu then scroll down to Purchases to find your shows and films.

Alternatively use the Google Play Movies & TV app on an iPhone or iPad and AirPlay your purchased content over that way.

Sign up for a free or premium account, build a library of content on your machine (it works for Mac, Windows, and Linux), and the Plex app will stream it to your Apple TV for free—as long as you leave the computer on.

Alternatively pay up for a Plex Pass and you can store all your shows and movies in the cloud rather than on a local machine.

Let’s face it, gaming with a TV remote is mostly a novelty and frustrating for anything more complex than simple games. If you want to unlock the gaming potential of your shiny new Apple TV you need to pair a real game controller. Read on as we show you how.

Note: This tutorial applies to the 2015 4th-generation Apple TV hardware update and the subsequent updates running tvOS.

Why Do I Want To Do This?

The new Apple TV is pretty beastly as far as media centers go and definitely more powerful than some of the older generation iPhones and iPads people still play games on every day. While the primary reason most people get an Apple TV is for media playback there is a whole world of polished games out there to take advantage of.

Although Apple has done a fine job ensuring that all developers make their Apple TV games fully compatible with the new Apple TV remote the problem is that despite the quality of the remote and the pretty solid support developers have put behind it, it’s still a little remote that feels way more like a TV remote than a comfy ergonomic game controller. It works great for simple games like Crossy Road but not so great for more advanced titles.

We’re not really going to put the finger at Apple over this as you’ll have just about the same experience on every other modern media center that has remote-based-gaming (like the Amazon Fire TV and the Roku). Aside from basic button pushing and some Wiimote-like swinging around using the built-in sensors.

Fortunately it’s super easy to pair a compatible Bluetooth controller with the Apple TV. Let’s first take a look at some compatible controllers and then we’ll walk you through pairing one to the Apple TV.

Identifying Games That Work With Controllers

All Apple TV games must support the new Apple TV remote but not all Apple TV games must support third party Bluetooth controllers. The easiest way to identify whether or not a game supports third party controllers is to reference the game’s entry in the the App Store on your Apple TV.

In the screenshot above you can see the description for the game Rayman Adventures. Each game entry in the App Store that supports third party game controllers will have the text in the app description “Game Controller Optional”.

Selecting a Compatible Controller

At launch Apple is officially promoting one controller, the SteelSeries Nimbus ($50) which is designed specifically for the Apple TV. Just because Apple is promoting informally as the official controller for the Apple TV, however, doesn’t mean you can’t use other Bluetooth controllers. As long as the controller is MFi certified (which is Apple’s certification process for iOS/Apple compatibility) it should pair just fine with the Apple TV.

Not able to download onto my iPad.

This rating is for the iPad download process – we enjoy this game on the laptop version and wanted to get for our iPad as well. However, upon paying, we were not able to execute the download, the link shows the app is purchased, but there’s no way for us to download the app. We’ve gone through purchase history and all ways we can find after google how to do this but still to no avail. Pretty disappointed about this. Is anyone having the same issue?
