The Apple TV may not strictly run on the same software as the likes of the iPad or iPhone, but it still has to be considered an iOS device, because, well, it runs on a variant of iOS. Following the Evasi0n jailbreak for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, the same exploit used on that occasion has been utilized by FireCore, the team of individuals behind the Seas0nPass jailbreak tool, to provide an untethered jailbreak on the very latest Apple TV 5.2 firmware.

Please bear in mind that this update to the renowned jailbreak tool only works on the second-generation Apple TV device, and will not jailbreak the third-gen, 1080p version. With no real indication of a 3rd-gen Apple TV jailbreak in sight, it’s little wonder the older, 720p version is selling for more than its as-new price on the Internet auction site eBay. Even now – almost a year after the release of the 3rd-gen Apple TV, the only way to enjoy a jailbroken set-top box experience with all the trimmings such as XBMC, is to own the older model.

Still, if you are one of those lucky individuals, you’ll likely have been waiting patiently for an untethered jailbreak on the latest firmware, and now, it has finally arrived. The difference between tethered and untethered, as many of you will know, is that the former requires a connection to a Windows or Mac machine in order to ‘boot tethered’ every time it is rebooted or switched off. An untethered jailbreak is a one-time affair which jailbreaks your device before allowing you to continue normal usage – rebooting until your heart’s content.

Of course, the Apple TV is rather easier to manage with just a tethered jailbreak, no less since few of us rely on our TV as much as we do our iPhone or iPad devices. However, this is still a welcome release from the FireCore team, and jailbreaking your Apple TV 2 device is as easy as pie.

Those on third-gen will, unfortunately, just have to continue to grin and bear it!

Valve Software will be making its digital storefront more useful for mobile users, by preparing the Steam Link and Steam Video apps for iOS enabling gamers to stream a PC or Mac game, or video content bought from the store, to their iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV.

The Steam Link app, announced on Wednesday and launching the week of May 21, will extend the existing Steam In-Home Streaming service to work with more devices. The current version allows users to play a game on one PC or Mac from another computer, streaming a live video feed over a home network to the client while relaying back gameplay commands back to the host.

When launched, the app will allow the stream-based gameplay of the user’s Steam library to work on an iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, played over a 5GHz home Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. An Android version will also be available, with the app initially offered in beta on that format with iOS arriving at a later time.

The app will also support a number of different game controllers, including Valve’s own Steam Controller and MFi controllers, as well as on-screen controls.

Due later this summer, the Steam Video app will provide access to movies and shows owned on the user’s account. Able to be streamed over Wi-Fi or LTE, the app will also provide both streaming and offline modes, making it useful for those preferring to have a local copy of video content.

This is not the first time Valve has attempted to bring PC and Mac gaming to the living room, as it also sells the Steam Link, a compact set-top box that works with the Steam In-Home Streaming platform. Supporting the Apple TV and its existing accessory range will give Valve a second valuable way to compete against the other mainstream game consoles from Microsoft and Sony, as well as each of their storefronts.

Valve has taken tentative steps into the mobile space, with its only iOS release so far being its Steam Mobile client, providing access to its storefront and community services. The company is also working to ship “Artifact,” a digital trading card game that it expects to release on PC and Mac later this year, followed by an iOS launch in mid-2019.

Following the launch of an eponymous standalone Apple TV app, Charter Spectrum on Friday announced a promotion that allows new and existing Spectrum TV and Internet customers to add an Apple TV 4K to their subscription for $7.50 a month.

The hardware offer was detailed in a press release touting the launch of the Spectrum TV App for tvOS, which hit the App Store on Thursday.

According to terms of the deal disclosed in the document, new and existing customers will next week be able to add Apple’s top-tier streaming box to their monthly plan for $7.50 plus tax for 24 months. While not specified in the release, Charter is assumedly marketing the 32GB Apple TV 4K, as the full-term cost is comparable to purchasing the $179 device at retail pricing.

“With Spectrum TV on Apple TV 4K, customers can now enjoy the ultimate entertainment experience across their iPhone, iPad and Apple TV,” said Apple VP of marketing Greg Joswiak. “We want to help customers get right to watching their favorite channels, shows, movies and sports, and with innovative features like zero sign-on, the Apple TV app and Siri, they are able to jump right in.”

With the launch of Spectrum TV this week, Charter Spectrum became the first U.S. basic cable company to offer support for tvOS 12’s zero sign-on functionality. The feature automatically authenticates existing subscriptions, allowing users to seamlessly access channels and on-demand content provided through their selected cable bundle.

Zero sign-on is fashioned as a successor to “single sign-on” functionality, which debuted in 2016 to streamline the log in process for a growing number of third-party video streaming apps.

A new remote adds voice control with Siri, a touchpad, and an accelerometer and gyroscope for games. And this fall, there will be even more to watch once the Apple TV+ streaming service arrives.

Turn Anything into a Remote

You’ll need the remote that comes with the Apple TV during the setup process, but you’re not stuck with it after that. Turn your iPhone into a remote with the Apple TV Remote app for iOS. (For Android users, there are some apps not made by Apple on Google Play.)

You can also use a traditional third-party remote. On your Apple TV, navigate to Settings > General > Remotes > Learn Remote, where you can map your remote to work with the device.

Check Remote Battery Levels

Is your Apple TV remote dead or just in need of new batteries? Go to Settings > Remotes and Devices to view how much charge is left. Click Remote to see the actual percentage number.

Adjust Remote Sensitivity

The newest Apple TV remote uses a touchpad instead of directional buttons, but sometimes the surface can be a little too sensitive. If you find that it’s hard to make the selections you want because you’re always overshooting the apps, adjust how quickly it scrolls by going to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Touch Surface Tracking. The default setting is medium, but you can change it to fast or slow.

Did you miss something someone said onscreen? Tap the touch surface on the left to go back 10 seconds, or tap on the right if you need to get past a sad animal commercial 10 seconds at a time.

That’s right, it’s actually still possible to jailbreak an Apple TV in 2019. Similar to the Chimera A12 iOS 12 jailbreak that was recently released, today’s utility utilizes the same exploits. In fact the Electra Team has worked with nitoTV to make Chimera fully compatible with the Apple tvOS 12 firmware. Unfortunately though, your Apple TV 4k or 4th generation will need to be running tvOS 12 through 12.1.1. This jailbreak isn’t compatible with tvOS 12.3. Again, you cannot jailbreak tvOS 12.3 as of now. Also this only works with the 4th gen Apple TV, and not the latest Apple TV 4k.

Jailbreak Apple TV Support: tvOS 12 – 12.1.1

As mentioned above this jailbreak functions on the tvOS equality of iOS 12.1.1. Furthermore due to similar restrictions found with iOS, it’s no longer possible to restore back to tvOS 12.1.1 or lower because the firmwares are no longer signed by Apple. The Jailbreak will function on the following hardware/software combinations:

• Apple TV 4th gen (2015)
  running tvOS 12.0.1, 12.1, 12.1.1

Neither tvOS 12.3 nor the Apple TV 4K (2017) are supported by this Apple TV jailbreak.

What you’ll need to Jailbreak Apple TV 4

1. A supported Apple TV running a compatible version of tvOS.
2. Either a PC or a Mac to deploy the jailbreak app.
3. A USB-C to USB type A cable (or USB-C to USB-C if you have a newer computer).
4. The Chimera tvOS 12 jailbreak app and Cydia Impactor.
5. An HDMI cable (for obvious reasons).

Chimera Jailbreak tvOS 12 Tutorial

Step 1:  Download the latest version of the Chimera tvOS 12 jailbreak app, and Cydia Impactor from the below download section.

Step 2: Connect your Apple TV 4th gen to your computer via a USB-C cable, and plug the device’s power cable into the wall.

Step 3: After iTunes recognizes the TV, close it. Then open Cydia Impactor and locate your Chimera jailbreak .ipa (app) on your computer. Again this was downloaded in the first step.

Note for macOS: mount the .dmg Cydia Impactor download and drag the program to your applications folder. If you receive an alert about not being able to open Cydia Impactor, you’ll need to allow it. Launch the System Preferences app > Security & Privacy.
