Living with the Apple TV – Long-term test

Considering it has been out for over a year now, the latest Apple TV hasn’t been quite the do-all addition to my television setup I had hoped.

In-fact, little has really changed with Apple’s streamer and the competition has not only got cheaper, but significantly more appealing with 4K content.

It’s the lack of apps, in the UK at least, that really disappoints with the Apple TV. Apple’s own TV app is nowhere to be seen in the UK, and big channels like ITV, 4 and 5 have decided against releasing dedicated apps. Even Now TV, Sky’s streaming solution, is hamstrung by its severely out-of-date app that is exactly the same as the one on the older Apple TV. There’s still no Amazon Prime Video either, though that’s probably to be expected.

Universal Search, another of the headline features, hasn’t been expanded in the UK and still only really works with iTunes Movies and Netflix.

Software aside, the Apple TV desperately needs a hardware refresh to enable some sort of 4K support.

While 4K support was slim when the Apple TV launched, it’s a lot better now and nearly all of its competitors have it. Roku, Nvidia, Amazon and Google all have 4K boxes, and even Sony and Microsoft have updated their home consoles. Considering its high-price, the Apple TV not having 4K will probably be a dealbreaker for some.

It’s not all bad though, and the Apple TV is still a pleasure to use. The Siri remote is one of the best around and if you don’t constantly use the motion functions, it will last a sizeable amount of time on a single-charge. The apps that are here are fast and responsive, while there’s been a steady stream of decent iOS game ported over.

Hopefully we’ll see an updated Apple TV soon, but really it’s the developers that need to get on board and build the apps. I know the situation is a lot brighter in the USA, where apps are more plentiful and full-on TV streaming packages are available, but everywhere else

The Morning Show

What it’s about: The Morning Show is a drama abouta morning TV news show and the power struggles between the men and women who work on it. It supposedly draws heavily from the book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV by Brian Stelter.

Important names: The show is being developed by Reese Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine. It starts Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and Steve Carrell.

See

What it’s about: A futuristic, post-apocalyptic drama, See imagines a world with no sight. A devastating virus wipes out all but a few million of the Earth’s population, and those that survived were stricken permanently blind.

The series takes place hundreds of years later, where humans have been without sight for so long that it’s disputed whether such a thing ever even really existed. 

Important names: The series stars Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Aquaman) and Alfre Woodard (Luke Cage, 12 Years a Slave, Captain America: Civil War). Variety reports that Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner 2049) will join the cast for the second season.

A recent Wall Street Journal article claims that See is costing almost $15 million per episode, making it one of the most expensive TV productions around.

Pros: Apple TV delivers the most sophisticated smart video experience today, with quick interactions and a familiar iOS style interface. It has the best remote on the market, given that the Siri voice assistant is well integrated with the device. The selection of apps is excellent, and AirPlay can be used for unsupported apps.

Cons: Apple TV 4K costs more than similar devices like the Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Chromecast, which all offer similar functionality.

Bottom Line: Apple TV is the best video streamer on the market, offering a premium user experience and a plethora of streaming apps at a reasonable price.

Lumino City, luminocity, luminosity! It’s a cute name for a game that is truly luminous, creative, and impressive. The fourth-generation Apple TV was a competent, if unexciting streaming box, buoyed by strong Siri navigation and hamstrung by navigational oddities and a high price tag. Now that Apple has had two years to improve, the company has debuted the Apple TV 4K ($179 to $199). This set is everything we loved (and hated) about Apple’s streaming box, but now with 4K and HDR capabilities making the best streaming device … for Apple users, at least.

But as one of the best Apple HomeKit products, you’ll still find an attractive and customizable interface, strong Apple ecosystem integration, and powerful voice search via Siri. You’ll also still find unintuitive navigation options, a remote with a learning curve and an asking price that borders on prohibitive. If you live, breathe and dream Apple and need a way to watch iTunes content in 4K, the Apple TV 4K may be worth a look. Otherwise, this set doesn’t offer many advantages over its cheaper competitors.

Design

Apple has generally adopted an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach to the Apple TV, which has evolved from a small black box into a slightly more elaborate black box. Measuring 4.0 x 4.0 x 1.3 inches, it’s neither small enough to hide behind your TV nor big enough to affect the overall appearance of your entertainment center. It looks unremarkable yet elegant.

The back of the device is similarly uncluttered. There’s a power port, an HDMI port and an Ethernet port. (The device also works just fine via Wi-Fi.) The lack of a digital audio port could be a pretty significant oversight, because that port can enhance your audio experience significantly. Presenting 4K HDR videos without a high-fidelity audio option makes this set feel incomplete.

Interface

The Apple TV 4K’s interface is something of a paradox. Visually, it’s one of the cleanest, most attractive, most customizable menu systems around. Navigationally, it could still use a lot of work, particularly for those times when you’re trying to switch among multiple services.

First and foremost, Apple TV’s home screen and menus are simply gorgeous. Unlike the tedious Amazon Fire TV or the jumbled Nvidia Shield TV, the Apple TV makes use of large, clean, movable icons for each of your apps. There is absolutely no guesswork in figuring out where to go for your favorite content. Every app you have is available right from the home screen, and you can drag and drop their icons into whichever order is most convenient for you, or even make folders to cluster similar apps together. The addition of folders, in fact, puts the Apple TV slightly ahead of the Roku, long the gold standard in streaming-box organization.

Away from the home screen, however, things are a little less straightforward. Apple has always favored surface-level aesthetics over deep-cut functionality in the Apple TV, but after two years, barely anything has changed.
