The checkra1n jailbreak has been updated with support for the Apple TV 4. The release was announced on Twitter by @nitoTV.

At this time the checkra1n jailbreak for tvOS only works on the fourth generation (HD) Apple TV. Support for the 4K Apple TV is possible but it will require a cable that doesn’t exist yet and a reliable way to get into DFU mode. There are no ETAs on either.

If you have a 4K Apple TV that is jailbroken, stay on that firmware version.

Currently, there are no plans to bring checkra1n support to older Apple TVs but nitoTV is willing to lend a minor hand to anyone who wants to take on that project.

FOX Sports GO

FOX owns broadcast rights to some of the best soccer leagues in the world and you can watch the matches with the FOX Sports GO app. In the United States, FOX holds rights to Germany’s Bundesliga and the Union of European Football Associations’ Champions and Europa leagues.

These leagues alone will let you watch some of the best players in the world. In order to use FOX Sports GO, you’ll need to sign in with credentials from either your cable or satellite TV provider. You can also use your login from streaming services, like fuboTV or Sling TV, as long as you pay for FOX Sports channels on those platforms.

NBC Sports

The NBC Sports app serves up tons of sporting events to watch live. For soccer, NBC Sports holds rights to air plenty of matches, including all those from the English Premier League, one of the top leagues in the world. You can watch as long as you have a cable, satellite or streaming service login to validate on the app (it works similarly to FOX Sports Go). This app will also become incredibly useful to stream NFL games once the pro football season starts. (NBC owns the broadcast rights for the always-popular Sunday Night Football show.)

beIN Sports Connect

For soccer fans, beIN Sports is one of the most important channels. It broadcasts loads of soccer matches, offering English and Spanish versions. The beIN Sports Connect app will let you watch all these matches on your Apple TV. You can use the app with either a cable or satellite login, or with a login from a streaming service, as long as you already have access to beIN Sports with your subscription.

fuboTV

Long known as one of the top streaming options for soccer fans, a subscription to the fuboTV app lets you watch an incredible amount of soccer matches. A full channel package, including about 50 channels such as TNT, TBS and CNN, costs $35 per month. Consumers have never had more choice when it comes to streaming devices than they do right now. Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, and Google Chromecast have made it easy to cut the cord, bringing the world of digital media to the masses. Oddly the underdog in the market, Apple TV, was also first on the scene. Launched in 2006, Apple TV was a revolutionary streaming media box that served as an entertainment hub long before the masses knew they needed it.

Now over a decade since its launch, Apple TV has been overtaken in the market by its cheaper competition, but a recent relaunch with new and improved features looks to change that. Here’s what’s new with Apple TV and what you need to know before buying one.  

What is Apple TV?

Apple TV is a set-top media center for your home TV that allows you to stream video, music, and entertainment content. Once upon a time, watching a movie meant popping in a DVD, but with Apple TV, you can access almost millions of hours of content without ever leaving your sofa. The device currently comes in three models, starting at $149. The most basic Apple TV only provides a standard 1080p high-definition picture, while the two more expensive models have 4K HDR output.

Each model gives you access to a massive library of streaming services, including Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, HBO Now, Hulu, DirecTV Now, and more. Most importantly, it’s one of the easiest to use media centers on the market thanks to Apple’s straightforward design philosophy. If you value simplicity over affordability, Apple TV is an obvious choice.

How does Apple TV work?

Apple TV, like all streaming media centers, requires an internet connection to work. You connect the device to your TV through its HDMI port. When you first turn on your Apple TV, the system will automatically walk you through the setup process. You’ll enter your Apple ID, the same one you use on your iPhone or iPad if you have one, which automatically connects the device to your Apple account. If you don’t have one, you’ll make one.

Once you’re set up, it’s time to visit the Apple TV Store to select your favorite streaming services. There are thousands of services in the store, from Netflix to Showtime Anytime to Crunchyroll and everything in between. Longtime Apple users can even access their purchases from iTunes on the service, including music, movies, and TV shows. Most streaming channels require you to have a subscription to access them, but there are free movie-streaming sites like Crackle for folks on a budget.

HOW MUCH IS APPLE TV PLUS?

If you purchased an Apple device (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac) after September 10, 2019, you’re eligible for one free year of Apple TV+. To activate your free trial, open the Apple TV app on or after November 1st and an offer that says “Enjoy 1 Year Free” should pop up. Additional information is available on the support section of the Apple website.

If you don’t have a free subscription, Apple TV+ is $4.99/month.

HOW TO WATCH APPLE TV PLUS:

Besides the obvious (iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV 4K/Apple TV HD), you can stream Apple TV+ on a smart TV that supports the Apple TV app (Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Smart TVs). You can also watch Apple TV+ on your web browser (Safari, Firefox, or Chrome ) at tv.apple.com.

Apple TV is a surprisingly decent gaming machine, and it’s even better with one of these wireless Bluetooth controllers.

Your Apple TV comes with a Siri Remote, which you can use to control pretty much all of the device’s functions. It doesn’t look much like a games controller, but Apple insists that all games must be playable using the Siri Remote.

SteelSeries Nimbus

Steel Series’s Nimbus was the first controller designed with the new Apple TV in mind (rather than being compatible with Apple TV but originally designed for iPad and iPhone).

The Steel Series Nimbus looks great and has an Apple TV menu button and a built-in Lightning connector. It also has pressure-sensitive buttons and offers 40 hours of battery life, making it one of the best controllers available for the Apple TV.

Mad Catz C.T.R.L.i

Mad Catz has been making controllers for a long time and built up a solid reputation. The C.T.R.L.i is a solid controller that takes its cue firmly from the Xbox.

The analogue sticks and buttons are great, but the D-pad leaves a lot to be desired. There’s a compartment in the back that houses two AAA batteries for 40 hours of battery life.

Make sure you get the C.T.R.L.i (with a small “i” on the end).

Mad Catz Micro C.T.R.L.i

Mad Catz also has a second offering, the Micro C.T.R.L.i. This is smaller than its main gamepad, and can typically be picked up for slightly less. The choice between the two isn’t so much about your budget, though, as it is your preference for a large or small pad.

The size may be a little small for some, but we think it’s the ideal smaller controller to match the new Apple TV. And the C.T.R.L.i has a high-quality feel (apart from that darned D-pad).

The PwnageTool was one of the first Jailbreaking tools released, and it dates back all the way to the iOS 1 firmware generation. It is the oldest Jailbreaking tool that is still maintained by the iPhone Dev-Team.

The PwnageTool can be used to Jailbreak the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and even Apple TV 2G, but is limited to to  iOS devices featuring an A4 chip. This means devices older than the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or Apple TV 3G. This is because there is no bootrom exploit for newer chips.

One of the benefits of PwnageTool is that it allows for greater Jailbreak customization.
