Why would anyone game on an Apple TV? – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Which one would you choose?
Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac

The new Apple TV has been on sale for just over three months now, and the growing catalog of tvOS apps and games looks incredibly promising. It’s what Apple TV fans have been calling out for for years, and it doesn’t disappoint.

But does tvOS and a strong backing from iOS developers make Apple TV a good game console? Is it an ideal buy for casual gamers, and can it mount a real threat against the latest and greatest consoles from Sony and Microsoft? Do we even need another console?

Join us in this week’s Friday Night Fight between Cult of Android and Cult of Mac as we battle it out over those questions and more for your entertainment!

Killian Bell (Writer, Cult of Android): Welcome to Friday Night Fights, Rob. It’s nice to take on someone not named Luke for a change. I’ll go easy on you as it’s your first time, but I have no intention of losing this one.

This week’s battle is over the new Apple TV’s gaming capabilities, and whether they’re really necessary. I was super excited about getting tvOS and a dedicated App Store, and I’m sure it will be successful. But I’m not sure we really need another console.

Sure, gaming on an iPhone or iPad is fun when you have ten minutes to kill, but if you want to game on a TV in your living room, I don’t see why you wouldn’t buy a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One for a far, far greater experience.

I know you’re an Apple TV fan — and a gamer. So what do you think?

Rob LeFebvre (Writer, Cult of Mac): Thanks so much for inviting me here to show Luke how it’s done. To be frank, he’s a little soft on you.

So, here’s the thing, Killian. May I call you Killian? The Apple TV is the perfect gaming system for everyone. That’s right — everyone. Whether you’re a gamer, not a gamer, an iOS gamer, a portable gamer, or a big console or PC gamer, the Apple TV is the the ultimate little machine for all. Not only can you play big, time-wasting epic games on it, but it supports every game you’ve already got in your Apple ID ecosystem.

The best example I can think of this is my girlfriend, who has become somewhat of a mobile gamer in the last few years as she discovered how great it is to sit on the couch and play on her iPad. Recently, though, she started playing the incredible Lumino City on the Apple TV. She played through at least four hours on the big screen, marveling at the hand-made details and challenging puzzles in the game. The big screen brought that game to life in…

Tethered Jailbreak vs Untethered Jailbreak – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Tethered Jailbreak versus Untethered Jailbreak comparison chart

Tethered Jailbreak Untethered Jailbreak
What is it? Type of jailbreak where when the user turns the idevice power off and back on, the idevice will need the jailbreaking software to restart it. Type of jailbreak where when the user turns the device off and back on, the device will start unhindered.
Restarting instructions idevice needs to be attached to the computer system and the same program with which the idevice was jailbroken has to run. Normal restart. idevice does not need to be attached to the computer.

Contents: Tethered Jailbreak vs Untethered Jailbreak

Free your iPhone using jailbreak software

What is a tethered jailbreak?

A tethered jailbreak implies that every time your idevice (iPhone or iPod touch) reboots — for example, if the battery dies — users have to connect (tether) the iOS device back to a computer running the jailbreak application, which lets the iPhone or iPad boot up and stay jailbroken.

What is an untethered jailbreak?

An untethered jailbreak requires no connection to your computer to restart the iOS device. You can reboot your iPhone or iPod Touch normally, just as you would do for a device that has not been jailbroken.

Jailbreak Software

There is a lot of malware on the Internet promising to jailbreak iPhones and iPads. Some of this software costs $10 to $30 but most of it is available free. Malware distributors not only have websites hawking their wares, they also use YouTube videos that show supposedly jailbroken phones. However, users should exercise great care before downloading any jailbreak software.

How to Jailbreak an iPhone or other iOS Device

iOS 6.1 untethered jailbreak

  1. Preparatory steps:
    1. Passcode lock on the device will need to be disabled.
    2. Have the USB cable handy to connect the iDevice to the computer.
    3. Back up the iOS device using iTunes so that if something goes wrong, you can recover from backup.
    4. If you are running an older version of iOS, please see some additional preparator steps.
  2. Download the jailbreak software from the evasi0n website for Windows, Mac and Linux.
  3. Connect the iOS device with the computer. If iTunes opens up automatically, close iTunes. Also make sure Xcode is closed if you have that app running on your Mac.
  4. Run the jailbreak software. Do not use your device during the jailbreak.
  5. If the process gets stuck, it is perfectly safe to restart the program, reboot the device (if necessary by holding down Power and Home until it shuts down), and rerun the entire process.

Checkra1n Jailbreak Released for Apple TV 4 – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

The checkra1n jailbreak has been updated with support for the Apple TV 4. The release was announced on Twitter by @nitoTV.

At this time the checkra1n jailbreak for tvOS only works on the fourth generation (HD) Apple TV. Support for the 4K Apple TV is possible but it will require a cable that doesn’t exist yet and a reliable way to get into DFU mode. There are no ETAs on either.

If you have a 4K Apple TV that is jailbroken, stay on that firmware version.

Currently, there are no plans to bring checkra1n support to older Apple TVs but nitoTV is willing to lend a minor hand to anyone who wants to take on that project.

You can download checkra1n for tvOS from here or at the link below:
Where to Download the Checkra1n Jailbreak From

We’ll be posted instructions for jailbreaking your Apple TV using checkra1n shortly. For now, check out the iOS instructions as there will be some similarities.

Please note that SSH isn’t on port 44 and isn’t enabled over USB. It’s on port 22 in preparation for 4K support.

Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for updates.

PwnageTool Jailbreak Tool Guide For iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch And Apple TV – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

The PwnageTool was one of the first Jailbreaking tools released, and it dates back all the way to the iOS 1 firmware generation. It is the oldest Jailbreaking tool that is still maintained by the iPhone Dev-Team.

The PwnageTool can be used to Jailbreak the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and even Apple TV 2G, but is limited to to  iOS devices featuring an A4 chip. This means devices older than the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or Apple TV 3G. This is because there is no bootrom exploit for newer chips.

One of the benefits of PwnageTool is that it allows for greater Jailbreak customization. This is because unlike tools like RedSn0w or GreenPois0n that Jailbreak your device in its current state, PwnageTool creates a custom iOS firmware file (IPSW) that will need to be restored to your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Apple TV before it will become Jailbroken. This is has its pros and cons, with the biggest con being that you will lose all the data on your iOS device.

The PwnageTool is only compatible with Mac OS X, but a Windows version is available and it is called Sn0wBreeze. Both tools are essentially clones, but are maintained by different developers.

PwnageTool Device Compatibility

The PwnageTool is only compatible with A4 iOS devices and does not support newer devices like the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or Apple TV 3G. You can take a look at the devices and firmware versions PwnageTool currently supports below. Keep in mind that we will update the PwnageTool compatibility chart when new versions of PwnageTool are released to ensure it is always up to date.

AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

These are the Apple TV apps that you should get right now – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

The Apple TV is a great place to watch content, whether it’s your favorite movies, top TV shows, or a helpful YouTube channel. And while video content is still the focus of the Apple TV, there are other excellent apps on the platform, too, that help extend its usefulness beyond content, from getting the weather forecast to checking out nearby houses or apartments available for rent.

Apple TV app

Apple’s TV is first on the list because it’s built into your Apple TV experience, and it’s become really good, particularly with the tvOS 12.3 update. The addition of channels, which allow you to subscribe to services without having to navigate between apps, as well as easier navigation have really taken the TV app experience to the next level.

Get an iPhone SE with Mint Mobile service for $30/mo

The Up Next row holds most (looking at you, Netflix) of the shows and movies you’ve been watching, synced between your Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad, making it easy to pick up where you left off with something, no matter which device you’re using. There are curated recommendations and quick access to your library of purchased movies and TV shows so you always have something to watch.

Hulu

If you’re going to subscribe to one video service for TV content, my suggestion would be Hulu. It has more new and library TV shows than most other services. If you’re a cord cutter, you can use Hulu’s live TV service right in the app if you want to become a subscriber. New content is added constant, at a similar rate to Netflix, so you’ll never run out of things to watch on Hulu.

A Hulu subscription starts at $7.99 per month, while Hulu + Live TV starts at $39.99 per month. Both plans feature add-one to remove advertisements from library content.

Netflix

In the past few years, Netflix has established itself as a home for a selection of great original content. From original shows to movies and documentaries, Netflix is the home to some of the best streaming-native content there is. Netflix also continually expands its catalog of movies and TV shows from other sources, with new content added daily. If you share a Netflix account with others, you can easily access and switch between the profiles created for your account, which lets you prevent Netflix from mucking up recommendations.

You can sign up for Netflix starting at $8.99 for a non-HD streaming plan, while an HD plan is available for $10.99, and 4K…

Where Did Apple TV Games Go Wrong? – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Where Did Apple TV Games Go Wrong?

UPDATES: COVID-19

By Jared Newman8 minute Read

When Raw Fury Games published its minimalist strategy game Kingdom: New Lands on iOS in January, creating an Apple TV version made sense. The iOS code was easy to port onto Apple’s set-top box, and the control scheme translated smoothly from the touch screen to the Siri Remote.

But five months after launch, Kingdom: New Lands has only sold about 600 units on Apple TV, versus 54,000 sales for the iOS version and about 35,000 sales for the Xbox One version that arrived about a year ago. Raw Fury cofounder and head of mobile Gordon Van Dyke hasn’t soured on the platform, but he says the publisher is unlikely to release any Apple TV games that it can’t easily port from existing iOS apps.

“If we were to only release this on Apple TV, it probably would have been a struggle,” he says.

Van Dyke’s comments exemplify Apple TV’s state of inertia as a video game system. Ever since Apple launched its fourth-generation TV box in late 2015, the gaming side of the platform has floated on without any clear direction or purpose. Developers say they have little incentive to create new games specifically with Apple TV in mind, so most games are iOS ports that are better enjoyed on an iPhone or iPad. The result is a game system trapped somewhere between success and failure. It’s an easy-to-ignore feature rather than a competitive advantage, one that Apple could really use as it bleeds market share among streaming boxes.

Apple isn’t the only company whose streaming box hasn’t made a mark on the gaming business. Amazon’s Fire TV and Google’s Android TV platforms are in a similar situation, and previous attempts at mobile-inspired gaming boxes, such as Ouya and GameStick, have been commercial flops.

In fairness, Apple has historically never placed a major emphasis on gaming. Still, the world’s most valuable company is in a unique position to do better. Its focus on high-end hardware potentially allows for better games than, say, an Amazon Fire TV Stick, and the company has a track record of rallying developers behind new devices like the iPad and Apple Watch. It also has the advantage of an enormous ecosystem with some of the most dedicated tech consumers. Some pundits even thought those advantages would help Apple TV take down the traditional game console business.

It’s not too late for Apple TV gaming to break free of its inertial state. But for that to happen, Apple would have to make a commitment to video games in a way that it never has before.

Remote Possibilities

In December 2015, not long after Apple TV launched, the device boasted 1,002 games, and gaming was by far the leading category in its App Store, according to Appfigures. Gaming on Apple TV has since grown by 170% to 2,704 games.

Still, that’s nothing compared to the hundreds of thousands of games in the iOS App…

Why there is no longer a good reason to jailbreak your Apple TV – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

One of the most popular posts I’ve written is about jailbreaking your Apple TV – why you’d want to and how to do it. Written three years ago, the Apple TV was either peaking or had already begun its decent as the clear choice for a video streaming device that could also run XBMC (now known as Kodi) when jailbroken. At the time the Apple TV 3 was just coming out and there was not yet a successful path to gaining root, so people were left to either grab a generation 2 model off eBay or continue to wait. The jailbreak process never came to the generation 3 model and the popularity of the device as a choice for a home theater PC faded.

A major problem with jailbreaking your Apple TV is that you’ll no longer get the standard software updates for the device. That means once you gain root access, the Apple TV will never improve, even as new features and services are added. You could always redo the entire process but that’s a pain. This was OK before there were such a large number of services available but now with HBO Go, an upcoming NFL season ticket service, etc. it’s hard to justify keeping it around just for streaming media from your PC – especially when there are alternatives.

Amazon

I’ve been using my Apple TV 2 – jailbroken with Kodi – for over 3 years now as my primary streaming device. I’ve upgraded the iOS version a couple of times to gain new services like HBO Go but it’s still not at the latest version. Lately my device has been unable to play video through HBO Go, probably due to the jailbreaking process. The fix is to factory reset the device but that would mean jailbreaking it yet again. Adding to my hesitation to do so, Kodi has announced that starting with the current version 15, the Apple TV will no longer be supported as a viable device. The whole point of me jailbreaking the Apple TV has always been to run XBMC/Kodi and now it’s not supported anymore!

But I’m over it. The Apple TV can still exist as it does for me today and move to the basement TV or whatever. It’s time to upgrade.

I still want to use Kodi but now I don’t have to compromise thanks to a larger number of supported devices – most of which don’t require jailbreaking. There are a few standout options:

  • Amazon Fire TV [FireOS]
  • Amazon Fire TV Stick [FireOS]
  • Google Nexus Player [Android TV]
  • Nvidia Shield TV [Android TV]

These are all Android based devices but the difference is whether or not they run Android TV or not and how difficult it is to load the Kodi app. If you want to use the device for all kinds of services other than Kodi (let’s be honest, just HBO Go really) then you don’t…

Used to love this App

At first, this app was great; simple, uncluttered, and to the point. Over time this App has brought on more ads (which I get to a point – just don’t let it effect the quality of the experience), on a iPhone if I come close to touching a photo or a link – bammow! I’m teleported away, think last few updates have neglected this patch, talking about photos – with an online app it would seem photos would be even more used one because the lack of print costs seems to me means bring on the photos, two the audience isn’t consuming this new the way it would with a news paper (some readers may have never read a news paper to be honest) today’s app readers expect pics (boatloads) and I’m always blown away to read an article about a crazy post some celebrity did the “broke the net” only to open the arrival and not have a single pic of the subject person, the tweet/pic/post at all. Seriously!?!?…

9 practical uses for your obsolete Apple TV – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Check out nine seriously cool ways to make the most out of your old Apple TV.
Photo: Apple

OK, play time is over. Last week’s article on five things to do with your obsolete Apple TV was meant to bring some light humor to your day, but we heard your comments loud and clear. Many of you looking for legitimate tips on what to do with an old Apple TV felt misled by the headline when you wound up scrolling through a sarcastic list. For that, we apologize. I apologize.

But we’re not all talk and no action at Cult of Mac. Without further ado, here is an actual list of nine things – four extras because we like you a lot – that you can do with your old or soon-to-be-obsolete Apple TV. For real this time. Seriously.

1. Use your television as a giant computer screen

If you own at least a second-generation Apple TV (anything but the large silver box) you can set up AirPlay Mirroring from your Mac to use your television as a giant display. Bonus points if you add a wireless Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, which will let you toss your Mac aside, sit on the couch and use your Mac with your huge living room TV. AirPlay Mirroring generously runs pretty smoothly so performance shouldn’t be an issue.

2. Jailbreak it and give it new life

Your old Apple TV can still get many new features.
Photo: Cult of Mac

Yes, it’s possible to jailbreak your Apple TV and yes it’s legal. So now that yours is old and seemingly losing value, breathe new life into it with third-party apps and extra media files.

For this, you’ll need some downloads and some cash. Download Seas0npass on your computer to jailbreak the Apple TV. Follow the instructions and make sure you have a micro-USB cable handy for hooking up your Apple TV. Then, purchase aTV Flash (either the Black or Silver edition, depending on your Apple TV model) for $30 and install that. This allows you to play almost any file type for music or video, browse the web, install third-party apps and more on your Apple TV.

3. Turn it into a server

This works nicely as a follow-up for the jailbreaking idea, since for this step you’ll need a jailbroken Apple TV. At the heart of every Apple TV is an extremely low-powered computer. It’s no easy task to accomplish, but it is possible to get it running as a web server. OS X Daily has a great guide for exactly how to do that. You’ll need to enter quite a few commands into Terminal, plus have an SFTP client handy for some uploading.

4. Move it to the bedroom

Just because a new Apple TV is grabbing your attention doesn’t mean you can’t use the old one exactly how it is. Apple always talked about using the Apple TV as…
