The Apple TV+ video-streaming service has been available to the general public since November 1, 2019 through the company’s TV app across Apple hardware, compatible smart TV sets from major television vendors and in a web browser via the web interface at tv.apple.com.

If you’ve been wondering whether you should give Apple TV+ a chance, Apple provides a risk-free 7-day free trial. Additionally, Apple TV+ is free for 12 months for those who purchase a new Apple device. The service costs $5 per month after a 7-day free trial.

• Widely available: Apple TV+ is available in over 100 countries and regions.
• Apple Originals: Stream Apple’s original TV shows, movies and documentaries, with new content arriving on a monthly basis (visit Apple’s website for show lineup).
• No ads: Apple TV+ does not interrupt your shows with annoying advertising.
• 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision video: All of the shows and movies available on Apple TV+ are streamed in 4K resolution with high dynamic range (HDR) color or Dolby Vision.
• Dolby Atmos sound: As per Apple’s press release announcing Apple TV+ availability, “most titles” available on the service also offer Dolby Atmos sound.
• Offline playback: Apple TV+ episodes and whole movies can be downloaded to watch offline on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac. Offline playback is unsupported on Apple TV because it’s a streaming device.

• International subtitles: Apple has subtitled and/or dubbed its shows in nearly 40 languages, including subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing (SDH) or closed captions. Apple originals are also available with audio descriptions in eight languages.

• Personalization: The TV app sports movie and show suggestions picked just for you. The more you watch Apple TV+, the more relevant suggestions you’ll get, not only from Apple TV+ but from all the different streaming apps you use.
• Pick up right where you left off: Start watching an Apple TV+ show or film on one device and pick up right where you left off on another.
• Family Sharing: Apple TV+ supports the Family Sharing feature allowing up to six family members to share one Apple TV+ subscription via their Apple ID, without revealing their passwords. Each account also gets its own viewing history and personalized recommendations in the TV app.
• Privacy: Apple TV+ adheres to Apple’s privacy principles. Your watch history, what you like and dislike and other preferences will never be sold to third-parties.

Which devices can I watch on?

With the Apple TV app, you can watch Apple’s streaming service on an iPhone ($699 at Apple) or iPod touch ($170 at Amazon) running iOS 12.3 or later, an iPad ($381 at Amazon) running iPadOS, an Apple TV 4K ($179 at Apple) and HD running tvOS 12.3 or later and a Mac running Catalina. The 2018, 2019 and newer Samsung TVs and a streaming box that can run the Apple TV app, including select Roku and Amazon Fire ($50 at Amazon) devices, should also work. No news on an app for Android devices. If you don’t have a compatible device, you can watch with a Safari, Firefox or Chrome browser at tv.apple.com.  

How much does Apple’s service cost?

After a seven-day free trial, Apple TV Plus will run you $4.99 (£4.99, AU$7.99) a month. Apple is also offering a $49.99 annual plan, that you may be able to switch to by going to where you manage your subscriptions. (On iOS and Apple TV devices, find it in Settings. On a Mac, it’s in the App Store.)

What about a family plan?

Through the service’s Family Sharing plan, six family members can share one Apple TV Plus subscription. Each family member can watch with their own Apple ID.

While prices can be as low as $4.99 a month (for Apple TV+), a household’s monthly streaming expenses can quickly add up as viewers tack on subscriptions to chase their favorite shows and movies. Competition is heating up between established “media Goliaths” who want customers for their existing products and companies like Netflix NFLX, -3.65% whose main business is streaming, said Jim Willcox, the senior electronics editor at Consumer Reports.

“It’s sort of like a perfect storm of companies that are really looking to tie you to their services, melding with companies that have new services they want you to try,” Willcox told MarketWatch. AT&T T, +2.79% , for example, would love to have you as both a phone customer and a streaming customer, just as Apple AAPL, -0.78% wants you to buy its devices and watch its new Apple TV+.

The new Apple TV has been on sale for just over three months now, and the growing catalog of tvOS apps and games looks incredibly promising. It’s what Apple TV fans have been calling out for for years, and it doesn’t disappoint.

But does tvOS and a strong backing from iOS developers make Apple TV a good game console? Is it an ideal buy for casual gamers, and can it mount a real threat against the latest and greatest consoles from Sony and Microsoft? Do we even need another console?
