Available TV Shows

Apple has more than a dozen shows that have launched, and a bunch more in the works. There are comedies, dramas, thrillers, and shows aimed at children, with a full list of what Apple’s working on below.

Dickinson

Dickinson is a comedy about the life of famous American poet Emily Dickinson. The show will offer a comedic look into Dickinson’s world, exploring the constraints of society, gender, and family from the perspective of a budding writer who doesn’t fit into her own time. Dickinson is set to premiere on September 14 at the Tribeca TV Festival.

Notable names:Hailee Steinfeld (Edge of Seventeen) and Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) star in the series.

See

See is an epic post apocalyptic drama where the world has been wiped out by a virus. There are survivors, but all of the survivors have been rendered blind.

Notable names:Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Alfre Woodard (12 Years a Slave), and Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) star in the series.

Ghostwriter

Ghostwriter is a reinvention of the previous popular TV show Ghostwriter. It follows four children brought together by a mysterious ghost in a bookstore, with the children teaming up to release fictional characters from works of literature.

The Morning Show

“The Morning Show,” as the name suggests, is a morning talk show drama that will take a look inside the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning.

Apple has signed a deal for two seasons of the show, with the two key stars, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, set to earn $1.25 million per episode.

Notable names:Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Billy Crudup, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw will star in the show.

For All Mankind

“For All Mankind” is a space drama that explores what might have happened in the world if the global space race had never ended.

Apple is also offering a deal that bundles an Apple TV Plus subscription with an Apple Music student plan. It’s unclear how long either of these promotions will last, so if you’re interested in any of its new programs, you might want to start watching now.

When first launched last year, DirecTV Now offered new subscribers a free Apple TV when they prepaid for three months of service, but the deal was limited time only. Today, however, AT&T announced that it’s bringing that promotion back for a short period of time.

The promotion offers new DirecTV Now subscribers a free Apple TV when they prepay for three months of the streaming TV service. One difference, however, is that you can’t redeem this deal online. Instead, you’ll have to head to an AT&T retail store or call the company.

As of August 16, 2017, the DIRECTV NOW $0 Apple TV offer is available for new customers who purchase DIRECTV NOW service at an AT&T Retail, Authorized Retail or through an AT&T Call center.

Gary Oldman will star in a small screen adaptation of Mick Herron’s Slough House books at Apple, Variety has learned.

Titled “Slow Horses” after the first novel in the series, the show follows a team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 – Slough House. Oldman will star as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but irascible leader of the spies who end up in Slough House due to their career ending mistakes.

Herron has published six novels and two novellas in the Slough House series to date, with another novella due out in January.

Former “Veep” writer Will Smith will write and executive produce, with Graham Yost, Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Gail Matrux, and Douglas Urbanski also executive producing. The series was commissioned for Apple out of the UK by Apple’s heads of worldwide video, Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, and creative director for Europe worldwide video, Jay Hunt. See-Saw films will produce.

This marks one of few TV roles Oldman has held throughout his career and his first TV regular role. That includes an Emmy-nominated guest starring role on “Friends” as an actor with a habit of spitting while saying his lines. According to sources, Oldman has been courted for roles by multiple networks and streaming services over the years to no avail.

Oldman is currently filming the David Fincher-directed feature “Mank,” in which Oldman will star as screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz during the development of “Citizen Kane.” He previously won an Academy Award for best actor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in 2017’s “Darkest Hour” and was nominated for the film “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” He is known for roles in films such as “Sid and Nancy,” “Léon: The Professional,” “True Romance,” “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” and the “Harry Potter” and “Dark Knight” franchises.

What is Apple TV?

Apple TV is a set-top media center for your home TV that allows you to stream video, music, and entertainment content. Once upon a time, watching a movie meant popping in a DVD, but with Apple TV, you can access almost millions of hours of content without ever leaving your sofa. The device currently comes in three models, starting at $149. The most basic Apple TV only provides a standard 1080p high-definition picture, while the two more expensive models have 4K HDR output.

Each model gives you access to a massive library of streaming services, including Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, HBO Now, Hulu, DirecTV Now, and more. Most importantly, it’s one of the easiest to use media centers on the market thanks to Apple’s straightforward design philosophy. If you value simplicity over affordability, Apple TV is an obvious choice.

How does Apple TV work?

Apple TV, like all streaming media centers, requires an internet connection to work. You connect the device to your TV through its HDMI port. When you first turn on your Apple TV, the system will automatically walk you through the setup process. You’ll enter your Apple ID, the same one you use on your iPhone or iPad if you have one, which automatically connects the device to your Apple account. If you don’t have one, you’ll make one.

Once you’re set up, it’s time to visit the Apple TV Store to select your favorite streaming services. There are thousands of services in the store, from Netflix to Showtime Anytime to Crunchyroll and everything in between. Longtime Apple users can even access their purchases from iTunes on the service, including music, movies, and TV shows. Most streaming channels require you to have a subscription to access them, but there are free movie-streaming sites like Crackle for folks on a budget.

During today’s “by innovation only” event, Apple confirmed that Apple TV+ will launch with a handful of shows available right out of the gate on November 1. When it does go live, the service will cost $4.99 per month. That is unless you buy a brand new Apple-branded device that you can watch Apple TV+ on.

If you do that, you’ll get yourself a year’s worth of the streaming service at no additional cost.

For any customer who buys a new iPhone, new iPad, new Apple TV, new iPod touch, or a new Mac, you will get a year’s worth of Apple TV+ along with it. That’s a savings of over $100.

To get it started, you’ll have to wait until November 1. Once that day rolls around and Apple TV+ goes live, customers who are eligible for the deal will be able to activate their one year’s subscription for free on a supported device running the “latest software”. Customers have three months after they activate their new device to start the year’s free service deal. Or if you bought and activated your new device before November 1, you have three months from that date.

Once the year’s worth of the subscription runs up, customers will get automatically charged $4.99 per month after that, unless they cancel beforehand. The deal also includes buying refurbished devices, too.

Here’s Apple’s fine print:

• Customers who purchase any new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod touch starting September 10 can enjoy one year of Apple TV+ for free. Beginning November 1, customers can initiate the one-year free offer in the Apple TV app on the device running the latest software. Customers have three months after device activation to claim the offer, or if the device was purchased and activated before the launch of Apple TV+, they will have three months starting November 1. The subscription will automatically renew at $4.99 per month after one year. Customers can cancel at any time in Settings at least one day before each renewal date. Customers who cancel during the offer period will forfeit the remainder of their offer. This limited time offer applies to both new and refurbished models, including devices from the iPhone Upgrade Program, is not restricted to any specific sales channel (e.g., Apple Store, resellers) and will be available in all countries where Apple TV+ will launch. Up to six family members can share one Apple TV+ subscription and watch using their own Apple ID and password. Only one one-year offer is available per family, regardless of the number of devices purchased.

Ahead of Friday’s launch of Apple’s new streaming service, Apple TV+, the company announced an Apple Music/Apple TV+ bundle deal specifically aimed at making the service more affordable for younger subscribers. According to an Instagram Story published by Hailee Steinfeld, star of Apple TV+’s first potential hit series, “Dickinson,” Apple Music student subscribers will be able to stream Apple TV+ for free.

The announcement was spotted earlier by 9to5Mac.

After a series of Instagram-hosted Q&A’s meant to stoke excitement for the show among her fans, Steinfeld announced the bundle deal by saying that: “for those of you who are students with an Apple Music student subscription, you can now get Apple TV+ for free.”

She noted this means student subscribers will not only be able to watch her new show on Friday, November 1st, they also can check out her new single “Afterlife” with the same subscription.

The Apple Music student subscription is currently $4.99 per month, which provides full access to Apple Music’s catalog of 50 million songs, live local radio stations, curated playlists and other original content.

An Apple Music-Apple TV+ bundle had been rumored to be in the works, prompting rival Spotify to team up with Hulu to pre-emptively strike with a bundle deal of their own.

But when Apple formally announced its TV streaming service, it instead surprised everyone by offering the service for free with the purchase of a new Apple device.

Of course, students are less likely to upgrade their phones and tablets as often as working adults, given the costs. That means they would have missed out on the “new device” deal, and instead would have had to pay the $4.99 per month subscription for the TV service. 

Meanwhile, Apple TV+’s debut shows have received mixed reviews from critics ahead of launch — with the star-powered “The Morning Show,” featuring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Whitherspoon and Steve Carell, even being called “dull” and “underwhelming.” “Dickinson,” however, has been a bright spot, with some even saying the show is set to be Apple TV+’s breakout series. It would make sense for Apple to capitalize on that attention — as well as on Steinfeld’s 12.4 million Instagram followers — to get more people watching.

Apple didn’t share any additional information about the Music/TV+ bundle beyond what Steinfeld announced. There was no related press release or even a tweet posted to the Apple TV Twitter account. In other words, Apple was narrowly targeting Steinfeld’s built-in fan base with the news.

It appears this is not a limited-time deal with an expiration date attached, just an ongoing benefit of a student Music subscription.

If you’ve already signed up as a paying subscriber to Apple TV+, you’ll be happy to know that you can still take advantage of Apple’s offer of a free year of the service with the purchase of an eligible Apple device.

When Apple officially announced the launch details for Apple TV+ back in September, the company promised that it would offer a year of the service to anybody who purchased certain new Apple devices after Sep. 10. However, it’s significant that Apple never called this a “free trial” of Apple TV+, but simply said that it was giving away a free year of the service.

In other words, unlike traditional free trials, this means that Apple is offering the one year regardless of whether you’re already a subscriber or not. So even if you jumped into an Apple TV+ paid subscription right on Nov. 1, you can still claim your free year of service if you bought a new Apple device after that.

So if you picked up a new iPhone or Apple TV during Black Friday, or you’re planning to put an iPad or MacBook under the tree, it will still include a free year of Apple’s streaming service.

The especially good news is that you don’t have to try and finagle the free year out of Apple by doing things like cancelling your existing subscription and signing up again.

Although there’s no obvious way to initiate the free year once you’re already a subscriber, after you’ve set up and registered your new Apple device with your Apple ID, an email should arrive within a few days offering you the free trial.

1. Wait for the Start Your Free Year of Apple TV+ email to arrive.
2. From your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, tap the Start 1 Year Free button in the email. This should open the “TV” app on your device, taking you to a page where you’ll be offered the free trial.
3. Tap the Enjoy 1 Year Free button on that page.
4. Confirm the “purchase” with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple ID password.

After doing this, you should see a confirmation that a free year has been added to your subscription, and your renewal date has been adjusted accordingly. This means that you won’t lose any time that you already paid for — if you’re on a month-to-month subscription, whatever remains in your current month is still included, and if you’ve already paid for a yearly subscription, your renewal date will be pushed off into 2021 — following the end of the year you’ve already paid for.

For example, in our case we were offered the free trial on Dec. 4 (following the purchase of a new iPhone 11 Pro Max on Nov. 28), but like everyone else who signed up for Apple TV+ immediately on Nov. 1, our renewal date lands on the 8th of the month — the day after the seven-day free trial ended. Hence, after adding the free one year, our Apple TV+ service will next be billed on Dec. 8, 2020.
