Apple’s home invasion isn’t just about HomeKit and the Siri-enabled HomePod. The company has been invading living rooms for years with the Apple TV, and the Apple TV 4K takes it up a notch by also acting as a smart home hub.

And don’t forget about that App Store, which gives you access to a myriad of apps designed for tvOS, Apple’s TV operating system. These apps are built to play big and colorful on your shiny 4K TV. Pro tip: Don’t forget to head to Settings on your Apple TV, then head to Apps and make sure Automatic Downloads is set to on. That way you can download apps onto your iPhone or iPad and have them install on your Apple TV.

Apple TV apps: Entertainment

Netflix

Probably the first app anyone downloads on any smart TV or streaming box/stick; Netflix is a default option. At this point it’s more surprising if you haven’t downloaded Netflix onto your TV device. You’ll also get to see Netflix’s massive library in wonderful 4K, not to mention getting access to some great shows and movies exclusive to the big red platform.

Disney Plus

The new kid on the block, Disney Plus is a repository for everything built by, and owned by, the House of Mouse. That means the entire Star Wars catalogue, Marvel movies, and a bunch of Fox properties including the entire Simpsons library (20th Century Fox and Fox Television are now owned by Disney, keep up). Even some of Fox’s Marvel movies are making their way onto the platform. At just $6.99 a month it’s also easier to justify lumping it on top of Netflix etc. If you’re in the UK, you won’t be able to get access until March.

HBO Now/Go

HBO comes in two flavors: Go, which is basically the on-demand version of the cable or satellite channel you’re already paying for; and Now, which is the cord-cutters’ dream come true, as you’ll be able to get the channel all by its lonesome for $15 a month.

Apple TV+ the streaming service from Apple is finally here. It costs £4.99/$4.99 a month, which is less than other streaming services. But it also offers less than other streaming services, lacking the huge catalogues of films and TV shows on offer from Netflix, Amazon Prime and the others.

You might want to watch See, or The Morning Show, or one of the other shows being broadcast by Apple but the monthly subscription may not appeal to you. Wondering if you can get Apple TV+ for free? We’ll run through your options.

How to watch shows for free on Apple TV+

As of 9 April 2020 in the US, and 11 April in the UK and elsewhere Apple started making some shows completely free to watch without subscribing. We have more information about which shows Apple is offering for free here.

Free shows include:

• Ghostwriter
• Helpsters
• Little America
• The Elephant Queen
• Servant
• Snoopy in Space

We don’t know when or if Apple will stop offering these shows for free, we imagine that it will continue to do so though. This move may also indicate that other shows could become free in the future.

Sign up for the 7-day trial

If you want to watch a show that isn’t available for free you could activate your free seven-day trial and binge-watch it!

The 7-day trial will automatically auto-renew into a monthly subscription though, so you will need to be prepared to cancel within the week if you don’t want to be out-of-pocket.

The 7-day trial might sound attractive if you think you can watch a whole series in a week. However, watch out with new series as you may find Apple is adding a new episode each week. This is what Apple did with the first season of See.

On that basis, you could wait until the whole of the series you want to watch is online and then attempt to watch all the episodes that week before stopping the subscription before it starts.

That’s all very well if you have a particular series in mind and think you can spare the time to watch the whole season in one week, but what if you think you might need a bit more time?

Find Apple TV channels

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, open the Apple TV app, then tap Watch Now at the bottom of the screen. On your Mac, Apple TV, smart TV, or streaming device open the Apple TV app, then select Watch Now at the top of the screen.

Scroll down to Try Apple TV channels or go to Search to find a specific channel.

The Apple TV app and Apple TV channels availability might vary by country and region, and specific channels might not be available in every country or region.

Subscribe or start a free trial

Select a channel that you want to subscribe to, or start a free trial. When your trial ends, your Apple ID will be charged.

If you’re using Family Sharing and someone in your family group subscribes to an Apple TV channel, you’ll see a message that you already have access to that channel.

Sign in with your Apple ID

You might be asked to enter your Apple ID and password. Make sure that you sign in with the Apple ID that you use for App Store and iTunes Store purchases.

If you don’t have an Apple ID, follow the prompts to create one. If you forgot your Apple ID or aren’t sure if you have one, learn what to do.

If you’re asked for a verification code, you have two-factor authentication set up for your Apple ID. Learn about two-factor authentication and what to do if you still can’t sign in.

Confirm your billing information

You might be asked to confirm your billing information and might need to add a valid payment method.

If prompted, agree to the terms and conditions.

Watch on all of your devices, online or offline

You can stream content2 included with your channel subscription in the Apple TV app, without having to download an app. And you can access your subscription on any device that’s signed in to the TV app with your Apple ID.

With most other entertainment options canceled due to the coronavirus shelter-in-place ordinance, television streaming is at an all-time high. As a result, HBO unlocked 500 hours of free programming and other services have extended their free trial periods. Now, Apple TV+ has joined the fun.

Apple’s fledgling content arm has had a rocky start compared to its competitors but hopes to draw in new eyes by offering eight of its original series for free.

Variety first reported that the series will be available across 100 countries. The most uplifting is “Little America,” the highly anticipated immigrant anthology produced by Kumail Nanjiiani, Emily Gordon and Alan Yang.

Fans of creepy thrillers should check out “Servant,” the latest project from M. Night Shyamalan. “For All Mankind,” imagines what would have happened if the USSR landed on the moon first. Nature documentary “The Elephant Queen” follows a herd of majestic animals migrating across Africa. Comedic biopic “Dickinson” follows the iconic poet. And a slate of three children’s shows — “Helpsters,” “Ghostwriter” and “Snoopy in Space” round out the offerings.
