The existential cluelessness of humanity may not sound like a great starting point for a heartwarming comedy, but Apple TV+’s new series The Big Door Prize takes our general nervousness about life and apprehension to dream big and repurposes them into one of the best comedy debuts in years. Part small-town hangout comedy, part sci-fi mystery, and all philosophy generator, The Big Door Prize asks big questions while delivering even bigger laughs and feelings, and it’s a serious contender for best new show of the year. 

Creator David West Read (Schitt’s Creek) adapted M.O. Walsh’s 2020 novel of the same name about a small town called Deerfield (Louisiana in the book; Anywhere, U.S.A. in the show) where everyone’s life is disrupted by the sudden and mysterious arrival of a photo booth-looking machine called the Morpho, which promises to deliver a user’s life potential by way of a simple blue card that contains a single printed word or phrase. For one, it’s “guitarist.” For another, it’s “candlemaker.” One older man even gets “male model.” What happens next? Citizens of sleepy Deerfield hammer power chords, get wax all over their hands, strut around like they’re on the catwalk, and do whatever their cards tell them they’re supposed to do, despite never having an inkling to do so beforehand.

But The Big Door Prize‘s revelatory moments come from its characters attempting to decipher the true meaning of the more cryptic Morpho cards, leading to huge changes in their lives and relationships. “Guitarist” might be self-explantory, but what happens when the local gossip gets “storyteller”? What does “superstar” mean to the former high school jock and pro hockey player whose career was cut short by injury? In the real world, people all over the country are influenced by purposefully vague pseudoscientific and just plain dumb predictors of fortune: astrology, Buzzfeed quizzes, and religion have made smart people do stupid things. The Big Door Prize capitalizes on similar mania to explore what potential means, how people search for (and find!) answers in places where answers aren’t meant to be had, and the truth and fiction behind self-fulfilling prophecies in both hilarious and touching fashion.

Though it’s truly an ensemble cast, the center of The Big Door Prize‘s universe is Dusty (Chris O’Dowd) and Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), high school sweethearts in their third decade of being a couple. The Morpho’s arrival coincides with a key moment of Dusty’s life — his 40th birthday — but Dusty, an easygoing but pragmatic history teacher at Deerfield High, isn’t feeling the midlife crisis until the town’s interest in the Morpho machine and life potentials reaches a fever pitch. Things were going well for him! But now everyone is searching for more, and that rightfully bothers him. And it’s only magnified when he compares his card to Cass’s, which appears to be diametrically opposed to his. 

This is the magic of The Big Door Prize. Established connections become threatened by nascent ideas spurred by something unexplainable, bringing up the question of whether we as individuals are cheating ourselves out of something greater because we’re cozy in our comfortable ruts. By all appearances, Dusty and Cass were happy in their relationship, but any tiny seed of doubt becomes an oak tree with the Miracle-Gro of the Morpho. 

The Best Shows and Movies on Apple TV+

Other characters face similar crises. Teen Jacob (Sammy Fourlas) thinks the entire Morpho experience is bullsh–, but is it because his card indicates his potential is to come out of and overtake his twin brother’s shadow, or is it because he doesn’t think he’s worthy? Cass’s mother and Deerfield’s mayor, Izzy (Crystal R. Fox), gets a card that only reminds her of the past she gave up, sending her into a tailspin of regret (and interpretive dance). And Father Reuben’s (Damon Gupton) Morpho card is a nuclear bomb, making him question every decision he’s ever made in his life in heartbreaking fashion. 

I’ve purposefully refrained from saying what the cards say, because that’s a huge part of the fun. The Big Door Prize is structured like many ensemble comedies, with episodes highlighting specific characters and their arcs, prompted by the reveal of what their card says at the end of one episode and spending most of the next episode showing how they handle what it reads. This device brings the town and its people to life through surprising character revelations while also approaching the series’ central question from different angles. This isn’t a show that wants to give an easy solution to the meaning of life, and the varying cards and their interpretations instead present multiple answers that reflect the different paths we’re all on.

That journey is carried on the shoulders of a stupendous cast who make great writing better with excellent performances across the board. O’Dowd, familiar internationally as the slacking goof from the legendary U.K. comedy The IT Crowd and in America from Bridesmaids, embodies the yearning of the forever average man, nailing Dusty’s comedic reactions while also impressing in the show’s more dramatic moments. Dennis is perfect as Cass vacillates between wanting more and sticking beside her love, and the unlikely pair ooze chemistry and become one of TV’s most endearing couples. Fourlas, as Jacob, and Djouliet Amara, who plays Dusty and Cass’s daughter Trina, give me hope for teenagers on television. Josh Segarra is his usual hilarious self but is given more material than he’s ever had to show his range, and Gupton carries a sincere earnestness that gives the series weight. 

In addition to all the great performances and character work, the looming mystery of the boxy blue Morpho machine runs parallel to the characters’ changing lives. Is it a high-tech data-mining flash in the pan? Was it dropped from the cosmos by higher life forms? Is it a mouthpiece for a divine figure? Is it just a meaningless scam? Is it just a plot device? And really, does it matter? Though most of The Big Door Prize is all about the characters, the series does tease big things to come from the machine, with its origins and future looking like they will be a big focus of a potential Season 2. The thing is, the rest of the show is so good that it doesn’t need anything from the Morpho, but the added intrigue, accompanied by a delightfully magical original score, makes things even better. 

If there’s one knock on The Big Door Prize, it’s that Season 1 doesn’t end with a whole lot of closure as it sets up a Season 2. But the potential of the series is clear: The Big Door Prize could be your new favorite show.

But for many, a nasty Exchange bug still remains, causing iOS 6.1 devices to continuously loop when syncing a recurring calendar meeting invitation, thus crippling battery life and performance. The good news, though, is that a fix is on the way…

Don’t you wish you could avoid the usual routine after taking photos with your iPhone: sifting through shots to eliminate the ones where your thumb is perfectly exposed – but your special someone is blurred beyond recognition. Your worries may be over, as a new patent reveals Apple wants to make you a better camera phone photographer. The camera Apple outlined in the filing is designed to continuously capture and store images in a buffer until you release the shutter.

Amazon’s Kindle iOS app has been updated with three useful additions. First up, now you can pick between four color choices to highlight passages of text. Second, Amazon says that the brightness setting will now be saved across device sleeps. Wunderlist to-do and reminder app by Berlin-based startup 6Wunderkinder landed on the iPhone two years ago. It has expanded since to Android devices, as well as to Mac and Windows PCs. So far, the program has been named the iPhone App Of The Week in 104 countries.

Today, developers announced a major new version, a universal binary that now natively runs on all form-factor iOS devices, including iPads. The app features Facebook Connect, lets you share your to-dos and reminders, supports recurring tasks and subtasks, notifications and seamless cloud sync across all your devices…

The New Zealand Police Department has announced that it will be doling out 10,000 iOS devices to its officers over the next few months as part of a new technology push. It says that 6000 of its officers will be receiving iPhones, and 3900 of them will also receive tablets.

According to Police Commissioner Peter Marshall, the decision to go with Apple’s platform came after field testing a range of different devices, including those running Android and BlackBerry operating systems. The deal is said to be worth in upwards of $5 million…

Apple has seen a few high-profile departures of its silicon experts for graphics giant AMD. For example, Apple’s lead chip designer Jim Keller left the company last August to join AMD’s Mark Papermaster, who was briefly Apple’s VP of iPhone engineering.

Another example: Wayne Meretsky, who is known for his work on Macs and other Apple products, in January became AMD’s VP of Software Development. And perhaps most importantly, director of graphics architecture Raja Koduri in April left for AMD, where he had previously worked before Apple poached him in April 2009.

Now, Apple is striking back. According to a number of job listings and LinkedIn profiles, Apple this year picked up at least a dozen former AMD graphics engineers for Orlando Design Center, its rumored brand new shop for custom chip development. These hires indicate Apple’s accelerated custom chip development as the firm seeks to further distance itself from rivals, whose products mostly incorporate off-the-shelf chips…

In a steady stream of updates, Google has been perfecting its mobile Gmail app, adding new features and smoothing out rough edges over time. For example, back in March the Gmail iOS app added new gestures so you could swipe left and right to move between messages, without having to return to their inbox. And in a minor update earlier in the month, the software gained ability to open web links in Google’s other apps, like Maps and YouTube.

Well, today’s a big day as the Gmail team just announced a brand new inbox across mobile Gmail apps and on the web. So, what’s new? Basically, categories and tabbed interface, to allow for easier organization of email messages.

Apple TV+ is shooting for the moon with Hello Tomorrow!, a new comedic drama starring Emmy-winning actor and The Morning Show star, Billy Crudup.

Crudup, who’s also an executive producer on the series, plays Jack Billings, a traveling salesman in a retro-future world who makes a living by selling timeshares on the moon. TrollBoard is another icon theming app for non-jailbroken iOS 15.0-16.1.2 devices – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

There have been countless apps for TrollStore and the MacDirtyCow exploit in recent memory that allow users to customize their Home Screen’s app icons with ease, even without a jailbreak on firmware ranging from iOS 14.0-16.1.2. The latest of such releases is TrollBoard by iOS developer haxi0.

According to the developer, TrollBoard is a proof-of-concept in its current form, and it supports iOS versions 15.0-16.1.2 by way of the MacDirtyCow exploit. In the /r/jailbreak release post, the developer says that while it can be used as an alternative to the Cowabunga app, TrollBoard doesn’t offer the option to revert your app icons back to how they were, so there’s a hint of risk involved with using it in its current form; a future v1.1 update could add a revert feature.

On the project’s GitHub page, haxi0 outlines how to use TrollBoard:

1) Launch the app so TrollBoard can make the folder for you.
2) Get an icon you want to change your app to, drop it into /var/mobileTrollBoard via Santander or Filza
3) Make sure your icon is named after your app’s bundle ID; for example: com.apple.calculator.png for the Calculator app
4) Go to TrollBoard and refresh the list of .png files. You can see your image there and tap to apply it to see how it looks

At this time, TrollBoard only works with user apps and will require a reboot after being applied for themed app icons to take effect.

As for the risk incurred with using TrollBoard, developers of the competing Cowabunga platform have said that because TrollBoard modifies system files, there’s a chance for conflict with other customization apps that would make troubleshooting a nightmare scenario. Many of the sentiments appear to echo the Mugunghwa vs. TrollTools debate that raged on between those two developers many months ago.

The TrollBoard developer responded to some of these claims in the /r/jailbreak release thread, and it seems like future updates could make it even safer to use.

It will be interesting to see how TrollBoard evolves as future releases come out. After all, competition is good because it motivates developers to produce better apps compared to their competition to draw users in. With so many different app theming platforms available for non-jailbroken devices, there’s a lot more fun to be had on devices that don’t currently have a jailbreak.

appletv – Will Severance Get Easier to Watch Through Season 1 – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

I’ve watched 3 episodes so far, and while the first one caught my attention, episode 2 was difficult to watch, and episode 3 was even more so. The show is getting great critical reviews, but it is so dark and not in a way I find appealing. I feel like I’m watching people in great pain.

Despite that, I am curious as to where it goes. However, if as I understand it, there will be a season 2, it’s obvious that things won’t be resolved in season 1.

With that said, does the show get easier to watch? Does it actually become enjoyable?

Hopefully without spoiling the show too much, can anyone give me a reason to continue watching.

Hello!

I have an AppleTV 4K from 2021, one without optical output. I do have a bluetooth soundbar hooked up at the moment and it does work well but I would like to invest a little to get true surround sound. I am by no means an audiophile who can hear whatsoever there is to hear for a difference so any cheap sound system will do just fine. I am also happy to go for an older system which I can find second hand.

So this is not an easy endeavour because the only output there is on the Apple TV 4K is HDMI. So I need either to invest in an expensive AV unit or go via a Toslink extractor. But then apparently I can’t control the volume via the Apple TV anymore. And when investing in an older AV unit I am worried Netflix won’t work anymore with its HDCP protection etc. So it’s all a bit confusing what I should buy.

If only I could simply get 4 or 5 HomePods and place them in a room to get this sorted 🙂
