If you’ve been thinking of cutting the cord, r you’re ready to give a new streaming service a try, DirecTV Now has got a pretty sweet deal: Pre-pay for four months of service, at a minimum of $50 per month, and the company will throw in a free, 32GB Apple TV 4K, worth $180. Or, looked at another way, you get $200 of live streaming TV, for just $20. Either way, you have until April 30 if you want to take advantage of the offer, as long as you’re a new subscriber.

DirecTV Now is AT&T’s answer to products like Sling TV and Hulu with Live TV, in that it’s a streaming subscription TV service that delivers both live and on-demand programming over your existing internet connection. It doesn’t require a cable or satellite box, though you do need a compatible streaming device like the Apple TV 4K. It’s become a popular choice for cord-cutters who want to ditch their cable TV subscription, but who don’t want to leave the familiarity of an on-screen guide and premium channels they’re accustomed to.

At first blush, offering up a free Apple TV 4K feels like a thinly veiled move to by DirecTV Now to bolster its subscriber numbers. In January, we learned that the company had a miserable fourth quarter of 2018, losing a quarter of a million subscribers over three months. The company partially pointed the finger at folks who had reached the end of their discounted promotional period and were now forced to stay and pay full price or leave. By giving away an Apple TV 4K, DirecTV Now can still deliver a valuable incentive for signing up while not diminishing the amount customers actually pay each month for the service. By the end of the four-month minimum, people will be able to walk away and keep their free Apple TV, but they may not feel the abrupt change in their monthly bills the way those who were on cheaper plans did.

The Apple TV promo makes good sense on another level too: In March, DirecTV Now announced that it was compatible with the TV app experience on Apple TV — Apple’s curated, all-in-one video watching app. This gives new subscribers a choice of how to watch — either use the free DirecTV Now app, or watch the content from within Apple’s experience. When Apple launches the revamped TV App experience later this year, it will be an even more compelling way to view DirecTV Now and might well keep subscribers from turning off the tap once their minimum commitment is over.

The only irony here is that despite the Apple TV 4K’s ability to show content in 4K, HDR, and with Dolby Atmos audio, DirecTV Now’s content isn’t currently available in any of these formats.

Apple TV Plus, Apple‘s subscription service for exclusive original TV shows and movies, will launch Nov. 1 at a monthly rate of $4.99, and people who buy a new Apple gadget get a free subscription for a year. The details were revealed at Apple’s flagship iPhone event Tuesday, where the company unveiled its iPhone 11 lineup.

Apple TV Plus will also offer a seven-day free trial for anyone else who wants to try it. The company also said “most” of its series will premiere with three episodes followed by one new episode weekly. While “full seasons of some series will be available all at once,” it’s unlikely that Apple’s most anticipated shows will be available for most people to binge during a one-week trial period, at least not until later this year or in 2020 when entire seasons are complete. 

But starting Tuesday, customers who purchase a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod Touch or Mac will get one year of Apple TV Plus free. Current Apple device owners aren’t grandfathered in to the yearlong free subscription. 

Apple named nine total titles that would be available at launch on Apple TV Plus. “All of these incredible shows for the price of a single movie rental,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said Tuesday on stage. “This is crazy.”

Apple TV Plus will have a download option for watching its originals offline. In addition, Apple TV Plus will be available to watch on some competitors’ devices too. Apple’s TV app — where you’ll stream Apple TV Plus programming — is available on smart TVs from Samsung, and it’s supposed to become available this year on Roku, Amazon’s Fire TV devices and smart TVs from Sony, LG and Vizio. 

But the Apple TV app isn’t available on any mobile devices except iPhones or iPads. That means Apple TV Plus subscribers with non-Apple phones will have to stream to their mobiles via the web, rather than in an app. 

Apple’s $5-per-month price is about as much as it could reasonably charge. By comparison, Disney Plus, the highly anticipated streaming service from the entertainment giant, will launch Nov. 12 for $7 a month — with a large library of hundreds of movies and thousands of TV episodes available immediately. Streaming services based on cable networks, like Showtime or HBO Now, usually range between $9 to $15 a month. Smaller, niche streaming services often are priced at about $5.

The TV app is the exclusive destination for Apple TV+, but the TV app is confusing because it blends together purchasable TV shows and movies from the iTunes Store, which you can buy or rent, the integration of content from other apps like Amazon Prime and BBC iPlayer, and Apple TV Channels.

The Watch Now screen does not really distinguish between content that you own and can watch, and just Apple’s general recommendations. Hopefully, the TV app interface will be revamped soon with better features and easier navigation.

But for the time being, the easiest way to get started with Apple TV+ is to open the TV app, go to the Watch Now tab, and then scroll down until you find the circular Apple TV+ channel icon. You may have to scroll down a lot, and the position of this icon on the page changes periodically.

However, once you locate it, tap that and you will be taken to the Apple TV+ channel page. This shows you all of the Apple TV+ shows and movies available to watch, separated by category like comedy, drama or family fun.

Note that tv.apple.com is very stripped down compared to the native TV app on devices, and it only shows Apple original content. Both the website and the Mac TV app lack key features like the ability to skip intro or automatic next episode suggestions when you finish an episode.

How to Play Games on an Apple TV

 

Before diving into the list, make sure that you know how to play games on your Apple TV. Recent adopters of Apple TV may not know how to download and play a game on their television, so here’s a quick breakdown. Two different sets of instructions are going to be shared. The first set will cover owners of 4th generation apple TVs, and the second will cover owners of older Apple televisions. Anyway, if your Apple TV is generation four, follow the below:
