In real-life, the Americans were the first to land on the moon. In this straight-to-series science fiction drama from Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica”), it’s the Soviet Union that got there first. The series, which is also written by Moore, along with Fargo co-executive producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, imagines a world where the global space race had never ended. And the space program remains the cultural centerpiece of America’s hopes and dreams.

Already renewed for a second season, “For All Mankind” launches with the first three episodes on Apple TV+ launch day. Additional episodes drop each Friday.

The Morning Show

“The Morning Show” is perhaps the most advertised new series on Apple TV+ and with good reason. The drama stars Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon, along with Jennifer Aniston (“Friends”) and Steven Carell (“The Office”). The single-camera series has already been awarded a second season, which begins filming later this year. Apple’s launching three episodes of “The Morning Show” on the first day of Apple TV+ with new episodes rolling out each Friday for seven weeks.

The series also stars Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nestor Carbonell, Bel Powley, Karen Pittman, Desean K. Terry, and Janina Gavankar.

The Apple Music student subscription, which grants users access to Apple’s premium music streaming service at a fraction of normal monthly price, is about to get even better.

According to a social media post by actress Hailee Steinfeld, who stars in the Apple TV Plus-exclusive Dickinson, Apple Music subscribers on the service’s student plan will soon get Apple TV+ added to their account at no extra charge. While Apple has not made a formal announcement confirming the deal, additional reporting from 9to5Mac indicates that the offer is legit.

The caveat? You have to be a student (obviously), and one who can verify your student status through UNiDAYS. In other words, your alumni email address is unlikely to be enough to grant you the $5/month subscription. And the student subscription is capped at 48 months. After that, you’ll have to pay for Apple Music ($10/month) and Apple TV+ ($5/month) like every other normal person. Student accounts are also ineligible for family sharing, so you’ll only be able to use Apple’s streaming services on a single device at a time.

If you can’t take advantage of the student offer, there’s always the free one-year Apple TV+ trial Apple is offering customers who purchase a new Apple device. I switched to satellite-based DirecTV a while ago, when AT&T (owner of DirecTV) offered unlimited wireless data for DirecTV subscribers. But for those who prefer watching TV using apps, the company just announced DIRECTV NOW, an app-based streaming service that includes live TV as well as on-demand shows. It could be a bargain and it just got better.

For a limited time, if you sign up and pre-pay for three months, you can get a 32 GB Apple TV (fourth generation) for free! That’s helpful because DIRECTV NOW works as an Apple TV app, so you would launch the app and navigate the channel and show guide using your Siri Remote. Packages start at $35 permonth and go as high as $70 per month, with HBO or Cinemax just a $5 per month add-on. In theory, for three months up-front ($105) a user could get an Apple TV for free and then cancel since there’s no annual contract or installation required. But they’re hoping you’ll be hooked.

The service is not for everyone. It’s probably best for a single TV household, such as a college dorm room or single millennial. DirecTV only allows two simultaneous streams. By comparison, with DirecTV in my house, I have four “Genie” devices with a shared DVR and I can record multiple shows simultaneously. Plus, I don’t need to train family members on using an app instead of a more traditional TV guide. Also, my family likes the local TV stations and that may not be available in most areas.

There are eight shows and a documentary available on Apple TV+ as of Friday morning, and if you want to check them out, you can sign up for a seven-day free trial on Apple’s website right now. But that promo pales in comparison to the one that any customer is eligible for who bought a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac after September 10th. We knew virtually everything there was to know about the service ahead of its launch (although Apple took its sweet time doling out all of the relevant details), but now that Apple TV+ has officially launched, we have also gotten a look at the terms and conditions, which you’re going to want to read before you start your free trial:

• Offer is available for a limited time only.
• Offer cannot be combined with other free trials or offers for Apple TV+. Only one offer per Family, regardless of number of devices purchased. You can share your 1 year free Apple TV+ with up to 5 other family members via Family Sharing.
• Redeem your 1 year free in the Apple TV app starting November 1, 2019. Make sure your eligible device is running the latest iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, or macOS.
• Offer must be claimed in the Apple TV app within 3 months after first setting up your new device. To see the offer appear, you will need to sign in with your Apple ID on your new device. If you’ve purchased your new device before the launch of Apple TV+ on November 1, you will have 3 months starting November 1 to redeem.
• Upon claiming the offer, you commit to a $4.99/month subscription that starts immediately after the 1 year free and automatically renews until cancelled. You can cancel at any time in Settings at least a day before each renewal date. The most important condition, and one that’s going to necessitate setting a reminder, is the cancellation policy. As soon as you cancel your free trial (providing you decide Apple TV+ isn’t worth $5 per month), you and anyone else on your Family Sharing plan will lose access to the service. This has become the norm for Apple recently, despite the fact that countless other services, including Amazon Prime, ESPN+, Spotify, PlayStation Plus, and Xbox Live all allow you to cancel your trial at any time and retain access until the trial’s original end date.

NFL games are broadcast Monday nights, Thursday nights, Sunday afternoons, and Sunday nights on different networks: CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN, and the NFL Network. This can make it hard to see every NFL game you want to without a cable subscription. Fortunately, there are a lot of options for watching the NFL season without cable. Over-the-air antennas are free (aside from the cost of the antenna) and will offer significant coverage. Verizon customers will also have access to a range of live NFL games through the Yahoo Sports app, though it’s not worth switching carriers just for that. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you can catch the Thursday night games for no extra charge. 

After these free options, what you choose will depend on which games you want to watch, how much you are willing to spend, and whether you are willing to wait to watch some games until after they have ended. You will probably need to combine several of the following options in order to catch all the games you want to see, especially if you prefer to follow a team outside of your local market.

Developers have been digging into the Apple TV App Store data in the absence of category listings and a Top Charts section on Apple’s newly launched version of its media player device, which now, for the first time ever, has opened up to third-party applications. Apple had “hundreds” of applications live at the time of the TV App Store’s launch, though apparently not enough to build out dedicated category pages or rankings at that time. But these features will soon launch, we understand.

In the meantime, according to a number of unofficial sources, we can get a glimpse into which apps are finding early success on the TV App Store, including, not surprisingly, games and various video-related apps, for the most part.

It’s difficult to access this data today, because there’s no official means to do so. Not only does Apple not yet provide rankings, trusted third-party App Store analytics firms like App Annie don’t have insight into the Apple TV App Store, either.

App Annie told us that it’s currently unable to pull data related to which iOS apps have been optimized for Apple TV, for instance.

That has led a few developers to hack their own version of the App Store’s Top Charts.

One, Steve Troughton-Smith, pulled a static snapshot of the data just out of curiosity over the weekend by spoofing the Apple TV headers when accessing web chart data. This data pull indicated that the Top Paid and Top Grossing apps tended to be dominated by games, though a handful of video-related apps, like a Plex client, or utilities, like Carrot Weather or AirVideo, were also gaining ground.

In addition, Apple TV apps appear to be priced higher than iOS apps, 9to5Mac reported, noting that it was common for apps to be in the $5 to $10 range, and very few priced at $0.99 as on the iOS App Store.

However, Troughton-Smith’s data only showed the TV App Store at one moment in time. Since then, other charts have emerged to offer “live” data.

For example, developer Jonas Boserup has posted a list of the Top Paid, Free and Grossing apps in the U.S. Apple TV App Store, which again shows popular games riding up the charts, alongside apps for watching videos, and even a good handful of “workout” apps – something that could point to the potential for the “Health & Fitness” category to do well on the TV App Store in the future.

Meanwhile, Slide to Play has published its own list of Top tvOS apps, including breakdowns by category.

According to its data, which is refreshed daily, there were 1,025 total apps live on the Apple TV App Store as of last night.

Before anyone can begin working on an Apple TV 3 jailbreak, at least on 5.x, an additional exploit is needed to utilize the remaining absinthe exploits. The next major problem, number of people capable of finding these exploits, that would ever have interest in pursuing it, is very small. It’s pretty much the same people who find exploits for the iPhone and iPad that work on the Apple TV jailbreak, generally with much less vigour than its other iOS counterparts.
Jailbreaking of the Apple TV is much less popular statistically than other Apple devices, partly because the only mainstream, free purpose of an Apple TV 3 jailbreak would be to use XBMC. Meanwhile, other portable Apple devices get access to a wide variety of applications through a third party App Store called Cydia through jailbreaking. Functionally, jailbreaking of other devices gives you more abilities, whereas the purpose of an Apple TV Jailbreak could only be losely linked to piracy, something that jailbreakers prefer to keep their distance from. At the end of the day, jailbreakers get more credit and encouragement from the jailbreaking of the iPhone and iPad, so their generally more inclined to work on that first and foremost.

For almost over a year now Apple has had their latest version of their small media player on the market and while still useful the extendability of it isn’t as good as their previous model thanks in large part to the hacking community. The ability alone to install XBMC on the ATV2 is what led me to it initially but since the latest version has hit the market an Apple TV 3 Jailbreak has been non existent. For all intents and purposes the ATV3 is a capable device of streaming media online and through your “Airplay”, with 1080 support and the ability to watch whatever on whichever iOS device you own it’s a nice bonus. Still having been a big supporter of XBMC over the last decade I missed having that software (or any for that matter) capable of being on my ATV3 device. When I searched the other day I was surprised to see all the top page rankings being dominated about the news of an Apple TV 3 Jailbreak.

My initial shock was to see dozens of sites reporting on the upcoming release for a jailbreak mentioning it’s about to be released around the start of February. Having been fairly surprised solely on the fact that a lot of the “experts” had said they’re doubtful it will happen I decided to dig a little deeper. Fortunately I found what I was looking after going to some more credible sources, that being that all these news sites mentioning an ATV3 jailbreak are reporting false news or at least news with no real confirmation one way or another.

With that said for all those people still endlessly hoping I will tell you this now (as of February 17th, 2013), NO JAILBREAK EXISTS.

It sucks I know, the good news though is there are a handful of different alternatives already available that are better designed on the Android platform. Do yourself a favour and purchase a Pivos Xios, Raspberry Pi, or tackle my list here.

Good question. Truth be told it appears no one really knows for sure. Without getting to technical the basis of the Jailbreak needs an exploit to utilize the remaining absinthe exploits out there. Most other iOS devices have this capability and have an injection vector that gets onto the device with root access. That being said there are a few problems facing the ATV3 which is preventing it from getting Jailbroken.
