TrollBoard is another icon theming app for non-jailbroken iOS 15.0-16.1.2 devices – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

There have been countless apps for TrollStore and the MacDirtyCow exploit in recent memory that allow users to customize their Home Screen’s app icons with ease, even without a jailbreak on firmware ranging from iOS 14.0-16.1.2. The latest of such releases is TrollBoard by iOS developer haxi0.

According to the developer, TrollBoard is a proof-of-concept in its current form, and it supports iOS versions 15.0-16.1.2 by way of the MacDirtyCow exploit. In the /r/jailbreak release post, the developer says that while it can be used as an alternative to the Cowabunga app, TrollBoard doesn’t offer the option to revert your app icons back to how they were, so there’s a hint of risk involved with using it in its current form; a future v1.1 update could add a revert feature.

On the project’s GitHub page, haxi0 outlines how to use TrollBoard:

1) Launch the app so TrollBoard can make the folder for you.
2) Get an icon you want to change your app to, drop it into /var/mobileTrollBoard via Santander or Filza
3) Make sure your icon is named after your app’s bundle ID; for example: com.apple.calculator.png for the Calculator app
4) Go to TrollBoard and refresh the list of .png files. You can see your image there and tap to apply it to see how it looks

At this time, TrollBoard only works with user apps and will require a reboot after being applied for themed app icons to take effect.

As for the risk incurred with using TrollBoard, developers of the competing Cowabunga platform have said that because TrollBoard modifies system files, there’s a chance for conflict with other customization apps that would make troubleshooting a nightmare scenario. Many of the sentiments appear to echo the Mugunghwa vs. TrollTools debate that raged on between those two developers many months ago.

The TrollBoard developer responded to some of these claims in the /r/jailbreak release thread, and it seems like future updates could make it even safer to use.

It will be interesting to see how TrollBoard evolves as future releases come out. After all, competition is good because it motivates developers to produce better apps compared to their competition to draw users in. With so many different app theming platforms available for non-jailbroken devices, there’s a lot more fun to be had on devices that don’t currently have a jailbreak.

TrollBoard is available to try out via the developer’s GitHub page.

Are you planning to try TrollBoard, or have the comments about its safety encouraged you to try something else such as Cowabunga? Let us know in the comments section down below.

appletv – Will Severance Get Easier to Watch Through Season 1 – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

I’ve watched 3 episodes so far, and while the first one caught my attention, episode 2 was difficult to watch, and episode 3 was even more so. The show is getting great critical reviews, but it is so dark and not in a way I find appealing. I feel like I’m watching people in great pain.

Despite that, I am curious as to where it goes. However, if as I understand it, there will be a season 2, it’s obvious that things won’t be resolved in season 1.

With that said, does the show get easier to watch? Does it actually become enjoyable?

Hopefully without spoiling the show too much, can anyone give me a reason to continue watching.

Thanks.

appletv – How to get 5.1 surround sound (without breaking the bank) – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

Hello!

I have an AppleTV 4K from 2021, one without optical output. I do have a bluetooth soundbar hooked up at the moment and it does work well but I would like to invest a little to get true surround sound. I am by no means an audiophile who can hear whatsoever there is to hear for a difference so any cheap sound system will do just fine. I am also happy to go for an older system which I can find second hand.

So this is not an easy endeavour because the only output there is on the Apple TV 4K is HDMI. So I need either to invest in an expensive AV unit or go via a Toslink extractor. But then apparently I can’t control the volume via the Apple TV anymore. And when investing in an older AV unit I am worried Netflix won’t work anymore with its HDCP protection etc. So it’s all a bit confusing what I should buy.

If only I could simply get 4 or 5 HomePods and place them in a room to get this sorted 🙂

How have you guys got around this?

SixteenMusic brings a configurable iOS 16-style Now Playing Lock Screen UI to jailbroken iOS 14 & 15 handsets – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

If you look at the Lock Screen’s Now Playing media interface on an iOS 16 device beside an iOS 15 device, then you should notice some aesthetic differences.

iOS developer ETHN has just released a new jailbreak tweak called SixteenMusic that ports the newer Lock Screen Now Playing aesthetics to older, jailbroken versions of iOS so that even users who avoid updates can feel like they’re using the latest software.

As you can see in the screenshot examples above, the SixteenMusic UI gives users a nice view of the album artwork and easy-to-understand media controls that should look and feel familiar if you’ve ever used an iOS 16 device before.

You’ll see that the tweak supports both portrait and landscape orientation, and that it plays nicely with missed notifications to ensure you can see everything that matters at a glance.

Once installed, users will find a dedicated preference pane in the Settings app where they can configure SixteenMusic to their liking:

Options to configure here include:

  • Enabling and disabling SixteenMusic on demand
  • Disabling the background
  • Enabling landscape orientation support
  • Choosing between normal, compact, or large Now Playing styles

The developer provides an Apply button at the top right of the preference pane in the form of a check mark that allows you to save any changes you make here.

Since people have different opinions on what looks best, it’s brilliant that the developer not only ported the iOS 16 aesthetics to jailbroken iOS 14 and 15 devices with SixteenMusic, but also gave users the choice to select their now Playing style.

If you’re interested in giving your pwned handset’s Now Playing interface a boost by making it look and feel more like an iOS 16 device, then you can purchase the new SixteenMusic jailbreak tweak from the Havoc repository for just $0.99.

What are your thoughts about having a configurable iOS 16-inspired Now Playing interface on your jailbroken iOS 14 or iOS 15 handset? Let us know in the comments section down below.

Best streaming devices 2023 – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

For decades, the only way you could watch your favorite TV shows was to note down the time and channel it was broadcast on. If you missed the show, there was often very little you could do to view it unless you managed to catch a rerun.

But with streaming services making it easier than ever, we all have tons of entertainment at our fingertips. We can watch our favorite content as often as we like and even discover new shows.

While this is available through your non-smart TV or computer monitor, you’ll still need a streaming device to access the various services. If you aren’t sure where to start, the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote is an excellent choice.

When you subscribe to a television provider, it’s like buying a ticket to a theme park. It doesn’t matter if you want to experience every extreme thrill ride in the park or you want to try out the merry-go-round, you pay for it all.

A streaming service, on the other hand, is like going to a carnival, you only purchase tickets for the rides you take. Alternatively, you can still purchase a wristband, but the difference is you aren’t forced to.

Two types of streaming devices are available for your TV: a stick or a box.

  • A stick is smaller, it plugs directly into an HDMI input on your TV, and it costs anywhere from $25 to $60.

  • A box is larger and functions more like your cable box (that you used to have). It has memory to save programs and a port for an Ethernet line (in case your Wi-Fi is a little sluggish). These devices have other features, such as chat capabilities, and are better designed for gaming. The prices start at around $70 and can go to almost $200.

With a few exceptions, most streaming devices give you access to the main content providers, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. If it’s vital to you to have access to Google Movies, for instance, make sure the device you’re considering is compatible.

If you have a stick and you want easy navigation, the best way to go is with voice commands. Without Alexa or Siri, you’ll spend a lot of time browsing through menu after menu, popping in and out of different apps, and looking for the specific content you want.

Note that some content might be available in one app for free, but on another, you might have to pay for it. Higher-end models, like box devices, tend to have better remotes. Some of the devices even allow you to use your smartphone for navigation, which is only handy if it functions globally.

A. No. Think of it like listening to music. Your iPhone plays music files that you already own, but if you want to listen to new music, you still have to purchase it or subscribe to a streaming service.

A. No. There is an abundance of free apps offering an expansive selection of free content. These apps might not include the most current content, but there’s a lot of it. Some current content is available for free, but you’ll have to endure commercial breaks that you can’t fast-forward through.

Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote: available at Amazon

Our take: A cost-effective option that offers a wide selection of apps.

What we like: Amazon’s Fire Stick is relatively easy to set up and use. The unit incorporates Alexa to make searching for specific movies, shows, and games as easy as making a request. Although there are some limitations, there is more content available via this device than you could watch in a lifetime.

What we dislike: Due to the streamlined controls, it can be a little confusing and time-consuming to browse content and navigate to specific areas without using Alexa.

Roku Streaming Stick+: available at Amazon

Our take: An affordable way to watch all the content you desire.

What we like: Roku has one of the most user-friendly services on the market. It may not have the bells and whistles of a Firestick, but that’s exactly what we like.

What we dislike: You might need to do additional picture tweaking, but it looked good with the default settings.

2022 Apple TV 4K Wi‑Fi with 64GB Storage: available at Amazon

Our take: This is the best choice if Apple is the dominant tech in your household.

What we like: This device allows you to use 4K HDR to offer the highest resolution streaming. You have access to anything in the Apple TV store and can perform tasks utilizing Siri. Additionally, this device allows your iPhone to function as your remote.

What we dislike: Like most Apple gear, Apple TV resides at the higher end of the price range. It isn’t the best choice if budget is a concern.

How iPhones and Magnets Will Actually Improve Android Phones in 2023 – AppleTV 4 Jailbreak (appletv4jailbreak.com)

An announcement in early January about wireless charging was low key but actually significant. Qi2 (pronounced “chee two”), the next generation of wireless charging for phones and other rechargeable battery devices, is coming.

It will be the follow-up to Qi wireless charging that’s found on phones like the iPhone 14, Samsung Galaxy S22 and Google Pixel 7.

The next version of Qi promises to be more efficient in part due to magnets that help position devices in an ideal alignment on charging pads. If that sounds familiar that’s because Apple’s MagSafe charging, which rolled out with the iPhone 12 in 2020, is essentially that. In fact Apple, which is one of the over 350 companies that make up the Wireless Power Consortium, helped design the Magnetic Power Profile that’s a part of Qi2.

While the Magnetic Power Profile isn’t exactly the same as MagSafe, it could lead to Qi2 being adopted on more devices, including AR or VR headsets. It could also lead to faster charging speeds. Currently, Qi wireless charging caps out at 15W, which also happens to be the max speed for Apple’s MagSafe charging on iPhones.

Apple’s MagSafe uses Qi wireless charging but the magnets allow for a variety of accessories.

Patrick Holland/CNET

“Qi2’s perfect alignment improves energy efficiency by reducing the energy loss that can happen when the phone or the charger is not aligned,” Wireless Power Consortium executive director Paul Struhsaker said in a press release during CES 2023. “Just as important, Qi2 will greatly reduce the landfill waste associated with wired charger replacement due to plugs breaking and the stress placed on cords from daily connecting and disconnecting.”

Another advantage of Qi2 is the potential for accessories. Take a look at the number of MagSafe and magnetic accessories currently made for the iPhone. There’s everything from cases and charging stands to tripod mounts and wallets. Android phones that support Qi2 could benefit from a similar range of accessories.

Considering that Android phones come in all shapes and sizes, Qi2 and its Magnetic Power Profile could be an equalizer that makes some accessories interchangeable between different phones and even different devices. Qi2 offers a level of ubiquity similar to what USB-C connectors provide, without the confusion caused by different USB-C cable types that all look the same. It’s hard to tell the difference between a USB-C cable that supports Thunderbolt 3 and one that supports USB 4.

Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile is not the same as MagSafe, which uses also magnets but arranged in a different position. So you couldn’t attach a MagSafe charger to a phone with Qi2. I should acknowledge that some companies make magnetic cases for Android phones that allow them to work with MagSafe.

MagSafe also contains a microprocessor, which Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile lacks, that allows an iPhone to know what it’s connected to. For example, if you remove Apple’s MagSafe wallet from your iPhone, it will mark the location where it was last attached and can even send you a notification that it is separated from the phone. I imagine Android phone makers could add their own microprocessor to Qi2 for similar functionality.

With the EU forcing Apple to change future iPhone models from Lightning wired charging to USB-C, Qi2 could also provide Apple a roadmap toward a port-less iPhone which has been rumored for several years. And as Qi2 is a standard, it could help Apple avoid any potential action from the EU around wireless charging.

On the whole, Qi2 holds a lot of promise. And while it’s not clear if Apple will replace MagSafe with Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile, it does prove that even rival companies can agree on a standard that benefits us all. Now do this for text messaging.
