1998年，湯漢斯(Tom Hanks)憑戰爭電影《雷霆救兵》獲奧斯卡及金球獎最佳男主角提名，電影更成為不少影迷心目中的經典之作。相隔多年，湯漢斯再有二戰新作《雷霆戰艦: 獵犬號》（Greyhound）面世，本來電影安排於本年3月於美國上映及6月於香港上映，但礙於新冠肺炎影響，最後電影改於Apple TV+平台播出。

電影的劇本由湯漢斯親自編寫，他表示自己非常欣賞著名小說家CS Forester創作的軍事小說《The Good Shepherd》，因此以小說為原型編寫劇本。電影背景設定於1942年的大西洋海戰，湯漢斯飾演驅逐艦指揮官Ernest Krause，雖然擁有多年海軍經驗，但他卻是第一次置身戰場。有護航任務的他要帶領其他驅逐艦保護37艘商船穿越大西洋，任務途中卻遭德國海軍的U型潛艇追擊。敵方神出鬼沒，除了要提防水面的砲轟船隊，亦要避開深藏海底的魚雷伏擊，面對敵暗我明的處境，Krause 需要時刻保持高度警戒。隨著同袍的犧牲，Krause 只能戰勝對自己的懷疑，才能順利完成任務，凱旋而歸。

電影由Aaron Schneider 執導，演員包括：《愛爾蘭人》Stephen Graham，《怪奇物語》Rob Morgan及《男女單打戰》Elizabeth Shue。

Looks like I missed out on the fun here tonight, because we actually went out tonight! Anyway, adding my 2-cents to the discussion. Gaming issues aside (not a gamer}, although played Angry Birds, too, for a week or so when we got a newer Roku a few years ago, and haven’t played it since. Although if I was a gamer, I would get the best game machine, not look for an all purpose gadget like Roku, Fire TV or Apple TV to satisfy my gaming addiction.

I also think Apple bashing is perfectly acceptable here. Maybe some hapless Apple fan, so caught up in the Apple ecosystem, will see the light and discover there is another way; maybe even a better way.

Nevertheless, I’m not a total Apple-basher; we do each have iPhones and iPads, and when it comes to DLNA, I have apps on them that can stream music and video on the devices and/or stream to WDTV, it is also not a problem with these devices. With the File Browser app on them, they can play shared media on them or to WDTV, as well as to the el cheapo priced Chromecast2.

BTW, DLNA is overrated, because by having a device like a WDTV and shared devices that can be accessed, it overrides DLNA, making it unnecessary. In case no one noticed, DLNA is mostly there for the masses of people who could not construct a home network using network-shared devices if their life depended on it. All one needs to play DLNA media is a wireless router, a media source and a Smart TV. No understanding of home networks or shares needed. But, as we know, there is a cost to streaming media via DLNA, (can’t play videos from ISO; music is often in alpha order instead of track order, A plus of DLNA is it can play from playlists and shared devices can’t.,so for that I appreciate DLNA. It’s the best thing about it.

An area where I feel Apple really screwed their true-believers started with iOS 8, when they stopped allowing folks to play or stream videos residing on a hard drive, wireless drive or NAS that they downloaded from Apple Store. They only can play them on an Apple device nowadays. (Although, I read recently where someone said he re-encoded his Apple videos to remove the copy protection so he could play the videos (he purchased) from a wireless drive on to his iPad. Clever. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this procedure?)

“I was wondering what is the easiest way to copy my personal DVD’s to my iTunes library so I can watch them on my Apple TV purchased last week. Any help would be appreciated.” –from Apple Communities

You can watch the DVD movies you have hired or purchased from the Apple store, but when you try to view a DVD, it comes out grey. I believe it is legal to watch a DVD you have purchased or rented no matter on Apple TV or other devices. Here below, two methods for you to watch all the DVD movies on your Apple TV.

Method 1. Rip with Handbrake

RIP the common DVD to your computer using Handbrake. (Handbrake is free, turorial: rip dvd with Handbrake.)  In Handbreak select  ‘Apple TV’ as the preset. You can then drop the movie into iTunes and access it from your Apple TV. You need to do this before you watch the movie and it can take up to an hour or two. Alternatively you can copy the ripped DVD to a thumb drive and stick the thumb drive into the Apple TV USB port.

Method 2. Rip with Brorsoft

RIP the common and commerical DVD to your compputer using Brorsoft DVD Ripper.(Perfessional DVD Ripper, rip all the DVDs, copy protected commercial DVD, such as Disney DVD.) With Brorsoft select, you can not only rip and copy DVD to preseted Apple TV profile, but also convert DVD movies to almost any other common video format such as H.264, MKV, QuickTime, MOV, H.265(HEVC) or backup the DVD keeping the whole movie structure as you need.

Download and install Brorsoft DVD Ripper for Mac (compatible with macOS Sierra, turn to best DVD Ripper for macOS Sierra), follow the guide to rip dvd for Apple TV step-by-step. For Windows users, please switch to Brorsoft DVD Ripper and insatll on your Windows (10) PC.

As was widely expected, Apple today unveiled the new Apple TV at its Special Event keynote at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. The new Apple TV (fourth generation) features a familiar but overhauled user interface, a redesigned remote which features a touch surface for navigation and Siri for interaction, plus there’s now an App Store for apps and games.

Availability and Price

The new Apple TV will be available in late October this year. It will ship in two configurations, one with 32GB for US$149 and another with 64GB for US$199.

The initial late October launch will see the Apple TV available in over 80 countries, but by the end of the year Apple says it will be available in 100 countries.

New Interface

For anyone that’s used an Apple TV, the Home Screen on the new Apple TV will be instantly familiar, with the top carousel of content, the first row of apps in a dock-esque design, followed by row upon row of additional apps. The big change is that the interface is now brighter and more colorful. More drastically, is the change to Apple’s Movie and TV apps, which now display more information in the similarly brighter and more colorful design.

You’ll also notice that the channels from the existing Apple TV, such as HBO Now and Netflix, have also been given a visual refresh and additional functionality for the new Apple TV. Apple have also built an updated Music app which now works with Apple Music and all its features including For You and Beats 1 Radio.

Screensavers have even been given some attention, with Apple including slow motion videos of several scenic locations such as the Golden Gate Bridge and New York City. As an added design touch, the video will dispay a day scene if it is daytime for you, or a night scene if its nighttime for you.

The New Siri Remote

The new Siri Remote dramatically simplifies how you select, scroll and navigate through your favorite content while bringing unique interactivity to the new Apple TV by using a glass touch surface that handles both small, accurate movements as well as big, sweeping ones. Adding touch to Apple TV creates a natural, connected experience, even if the TV screen is on the other side of the room. Developers can take advantage of the built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, and the touch surface on the Siri Remote to create games and other app experiences that have never been seen on TV before.

Apple has revealed its own video streaming service–sort of. Essentially, it’s a new version of the existing Apple TV app that compiles existing streaming services into one place, combined with a subscription service that features original content.

Apple revealed Apple TV+, a premium version of Apple TV that includes all of Apple’s exclusive shows, as well as those from third-party services such as Prime Video and PlayStation Vue, also features exclusive shows. Some of those shows already announced include a reboot of Amazing Stories from Steven Spielberg’s production company, as well as a new comedy from Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carrell called The Morning Show. Oprah Winfrey is also working on multiple exclusive shows for Apple TV+. Apple also very briefly showed a slide highlighting numerous other names who are involved

Apple TV+ is coming “this fall” in “100+” countries. It’s ad-free, and everything is downloadable and can be enjoyed offline. Pricing and specific release and availability information has not yet been announced.

With the revamped Apple TV app, you can watch content from, for example, Amazon Prime Video, CBS All Access, and Hulu from one app. (You can also subscribe to these channels a la carte, without needing any other accounts or bundles.) In addition, you can watch original content from Apple itself. However, Netflix shows and films do not form part of Apple TV.

The service was revealed at Apple’s “show time” event in California, USA. The company stated the new TV app will come to Mac, Smart TVs, Amazon FireTV, the Apple TV device, iPhones, iPads, and more after the service itself begins in May.

Apple has been preparing for this moment for a while. Aside from its music streaming service, Apple Music, the company has also commissioned multiple original shows such as Planet of the Apps and See, as well as a standalone Carpool Karaoke series. Apple TV+ is also similar to another service revealed at the same event. Apple News+ is a new service whereby you pay one monthly fee–$10 in the US–to access dozens of other companies’ magazines and newspapers. National Geographic, Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and “over 300” publications are included in the $10 subscription fee.

Elsewhere at Apple’s latest event, the company revealed a new gaming subscription service named Apple Arcade, and confirmed it was releasing a new credit card named Apple Card.
