Check the Hardware

As with any hardware-related issue, the first thing you should do is ensure that the device is working properly. If the light is fully on or off, you can assume that the device is in the corresponding state. A flashing status light, however, delivers more information. While flashing slowly, the Apple TV is starting up. Single flashes that correspond with remote control use indicate that the signal is being received. Three flashes following remote control use means that the Apple TV is rejecting the command.

Quick flashes of the Status Light inform you that there is a problem. The first thing you should do is attempt to use the remote to Restore the device in Settings > General > Reset.

If this isn’t possible, remove the power cable and leave the device disconnected for a while. Apple TVs are prone to overheating if they’re not stored in a sensible, well-ventilated space, so this cold start can resolve a huge number of issues.

Resetting Apple TV Without a Menu

If the Apple TV isn’t responding to commands from the remote control and “cold starting” doesn’t have the desired effect, you will need to reset the device to factory settings and install the latest software. Apple TV is pitched as both a home media player and as as an IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) service. Apple TV offers movies, TV shows, music, radio and more from the internet, direct to your TV.

It is one of the few products released by Apple in recent years not to be considered a break out success in a time where Apple has knocked out huge successes with the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Macbook / iMac range. With this new version of Apple TV, you can access downloadable content via iTunes and your PC, and it also integrates some familiar online services and other download / online streaming options.

If you live in the US or Canada, Apple supports the ever popular Netflix as part of its interface, meaning you don’t have to switch between Netflix and the Apple store when looking for movies. For everyone else there’s YouTube integration as well as MobileMe and Flickr compatibility. Apple TV is small computer inside a very sexy little black box, with a great piece of Apple software providing a slick user interface for browsing and watching digital content. It is predominantly designed as a Video on Demand (VOD) streaming service where new content is streamed to the Apple TV box and the displayed on the TV. Importantly, that means no Freeview TV or Cable TV channels through Apple TV and no saving or recording of content to a digital hard drive as the Apple TV device streams and does not store. If you’ve got your media and movies in iTunes on another computer in the house, you can use Apple TV to stream the content to the TV. Best Buy will have Apple TVs available in all 822 of its U.S. stores starting this Tuesday,  two weeks ahead of all other retailers other than the company’s own Apple Stores. Apple officially unveiled its long-awaited streaming service today, Apple TV Plus. Along with Apple giving Apple TV a total revamp in order to integrate Hulu, Amazon Prime, and other streaming subscriptions directly onto the app, Apple TV Plus will include original programming, which the company began outsourcing more than a year in prior to the event.

Apple has an impressive slate of upcoming original projects, ranging from animated musical comedies to paranormal thrillers. Here’s a look at the first slate of original programming exclusively coming to Apple TV Plus this fall:

Series

Amazing Stories

A science-fiction-fantasy-horror anthology series based on the Steven Spielberg-helmed 1985 anthology of the same name. Spielberg will return to executive produce alongside Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Daryl Frank, and Justin Falvey. Kitsis and Horowitz are set to write as well. Apple ordered a 10-episode first season of Amazing Stories.

“[We are] resurrecting this 93-year-old brand and offering to multigenerational audiences a whole new batch,” said Spielberg.

Are You Sleeping

A drama series focusing on America’s obsession with true crime podcasts and the possible consequences of said obsession, Are You Sleeping stars Octavia Spencer as an investigative journalist turned true-crime podcast host. Aaron Paul plays a serial killer, with Lizzy Caplan playing twin sisters whose parents were brutally murdered.

Calls

Calls is an experimental French series that will tell stories through real-life audio and very few visuals. Very French.

Central Park

A musical animated comedy from Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard, Central Park will feature a family of caretakers who live and work in New York’s iconic park and end up saving it — and the world. Frozen star Josh Gad, who also serves as a producer the show, Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton), Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Kristen Bell (The Good Place), Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games), Daveed Diggs (Hamilton), and Kathryn Hahn (Bad Moms) will headline the voice cast.

Defending Jacob

Defending Jacob is a crime series about a father dealing with his 14-year-old son’s murder charges. It will star Chris Evans (Captain America) and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) as Jacob’s parents and Jaeden Martell (It) as Jacob.

Dickinson

A coming-of-age comedy about the life of Emily Dickinson, Dickinson stars Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee) as the 19th-century poet. Dickinson will have half-hour episodes. Also joining the cast are Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) as Emily Dickinson’s mother and Toby Huss (King of the Hill) as her father.

For All Mankind

A science-fiction series that centers around the big what-if of “what if we continued the space race,” For All Mankind stars Joel Kinnaman (House of Cards) and Michael Dorman (Patriot), along with Shantel VanSanten (One Tree Hill) and Wrenn Schmidt (Boardwalk Empire).

Foundation

Based on Isaac Asimov’s science-fiction saga of the same name, the Foundation television series will explore the thousand year story of the Foundation, a civilization based on the psychohistory philosophies of Hari Seldon.

Helpsters

Two shows from the Sesame Workshop will find a home on the Apple Streaming Service, one live-action and one animated. The live-action show is called Helpsters and will star puppets teaching preschoolers how to code….

Apple has finally unveiled details of its upcoming streaming service, dubbed Apple TV Plus,the company announced at its entertainment-focused event on Monday morning. The company also showed its new Apple TV Channels app which will bundle together streaming channels and services from a variety of other networks and providers. The service, which will also feature original serialized and film content from Apple, and be available to stream content on Apple TV, Macs, and iPhones. The service is also coming to smart TVs from brands like Samsung, then later in the year LG, Sony and Vizio, as well as Roku and Amazon Fire.

While Apple didn’t give a specific price point for the service, they did announce that it would be an ad-free subscription service with all content available online or as a download to watch offline. Apple TV Plus will arrive later this fall.

Apple announced thatApple TV Channelswill bring together over 25different networks and streaming services together into the service’s bundle. Among these channels are larger streaming platforms like CBS All Accessand Hulu as well as smaller more boutique services like Mubi. Also included will be more traditional networks like HBO, which can be bundle for an additional price.

Through Apple TV plus, Apple is also adding its own original programming to the streaming line up. While this is the first we’ve actually heard of Apple’s new streaming service we already know plenty of details about the shows that will be on the channel thanks to the major production deals the company has made over the last several months.

La La Land director Damien Chazelle will create a series for Apple; so will M. Night Shyamalan. Bigger projects include an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation science fiction trilogy and a new sci-fi epic starring Jason Momoa. Also on the way is a series about a morning show that’s set to star Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carrell, and Jennifer Aniston, making her first real return to television since Friends.

Apple’s announcement sets the company apart in a packed streaming environment. With Disney set to launch the Disney Plus service later this year with a robust back catalog of content, and WarnerMedia threatening to announce its own over-the-top service any day now, with a likely launch date sometime in 2020, every major media company is looking to get into the streaming business. Rather than launching their own standalone service, however, Apple is opting to rely on the strength of its full offering and partnerships with other channels to set it apart from the competition.

With all this content on offer from so many different services, Apple is more than aware that choice can be overwhelming. In response, the company has created a state-of-the-art machine learning program to help create customized recommendations within the Apple TV Channels app for every user.

New York (CNN Business)Apple released its newly redesigned TV app on Monday and it will be available in over 100 countries.

The new update, which was first announced at the company’s star-studded event in March, allows consumers to subscribe to TV channels, such as HBO, Showtime and Starz. Apple plans on adding more channels over time, the company said in an announcement on Monday.

The redesign will be available on iPhones, iPads and select smart televisions starting on Monday. It will be available on Macs this fall.

Apple introduced some features that are sure to appeal to users. Family Sharing allows up to six family members to share subscriptions to Apple TV channels and users can download content that they can then watch in offline mode. This means Apple TV app is the “the first and only place where HBO subscribers can download movies and shows such as ‘Game of Thrones’ for offline viewing.”

The Apple TV app’s new look is very similar to other popular streaming services like Netflix. It includes content carousels, tabs and recommendations.

Apple offers personalized recommendations of shows and films from more than 150 video apps and streaming services as well as a new Kids section.

The new app will also eventually be home to Apple’s new original programming via its streaming service, AppleTV+.

AppleTV+ will include an array of original content including two docu-series from Oprah and “The Morning Show” with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston (disclosure: CNN’s Brian Stelter is a consultant on “The Morning Show”).

Other Hollywood heavy hitters like Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams are also working with Apple.

The company is reportedly spending $1 billion a year on its own content.

Being part of a family whose members own multiple Apple products, moving away from the notorious walled garden is not only a difficult choice to make, but often times a costly one. So when a product from someone like Amazon makes it easy for me to venture out even a little, I take notice. And with some of the latest apps and improvements that are now available on Amazon’s Fire TV, I just may be upgrading my collection of Apple TVs around the house to Amazon’s Fire TVs, and here’s why.

Everything you’d expect from the Apple TV

AirPlay through Reflector – There are several different developers that make AirPlay apps for your desktop that will turn either your Mac or your PC into an AirPlay receiver. AirSquirrels is one such developer and Reflector is its app that does just that. Recently AirSquirrels came out with a version of Reflector that supports the Amazon Fire TV. When AirSquirrels’ Reflector app for the Fire TV is running, you can stream music and video from your iOS device directly to the Fire TV as if it were an Apple TV. You can even enable AirPlay Mirroring and use the Fire TV to transform your television set into a big screen display for your iOS device. This was a feature that until the end of last year was pretty much exclusive to the Apple TV.  The only downside, and depending on how you use your Apple TV this may be an minor inconvenience for you, is that the Reflector app must be running before the FireTV will show up on your AirPlay list of devices.

iOS Remote App for Fire TV – Showing continued support for the iOS platform, Amazon just recently released a native remote app for the Fire TV that mimics the functionality of Apple’s own iOS Remote app for the Apple TV. It complements the included remote that comes with the Fire TV by adding a virtual keyboard. This makes interacting with the various apps on the Fire TV much easier. One feature that Amazon’s remote has that Apples remote for the Apple TV does not is that it adds voice search capabilities to the Fire TV. While this feature is included with the remote that comes with box-shaped console version of the Fire TV, it is a feature that is lacking on the remote the comes with the tiny USB powered Fire TV Stick. Amazon’s iOS Remote app brings voice search to the Fire TV Stick without having to buy a replacement remote.

Home Share iTunes Music with Plex – If you have not yet uploaded your entire music library to Amazon’s Cloud Player, and you still have a sizable music library on your Mac or PC that you want to continue listening to on the Fire TV, then consider using Plex as a replacement to Apple TVs own Home Share feature. While this is a great way of instantly accessing your desktop’s iTunes Music library from the Fire TV, you may run into some problems when accessing your iTunes Video library. Plex does not have the ability…
