A: We believe jailbreaking is safe and take precautions to avoid data loss. However, as with any software, bugs can happen and *no warranty is provided*. We do recommend you backup your device before running checkra1n.

Q: I have a problem or issue to report after jailbreaking.
A: Many problems and bootloops can be caused by buggy or incompatible tweaks. Remember many tweaks never saw iOS 13 in the pre-checkra1n era. If you suspect a recently installed tweak, you may attempt to enter no-substrate mode by holding vol-up during boot (starting with Apple logo until boot completes). If the issue goes away, a bad tweak is very likely the culprit, and you should contact the tweak developers.

Q: I lost my passcode. Can checkra1n decrypt my data or get access to a locked device?
A: No.

Q: Can I ssh into my device?
A: Yes! An SSH server is deployed on port 44 on localhost only. You can expose it on your local machine using iproxy via USB.

A: Thanks, we love it too! The project does not currently take any donations. If anyone asks for donations, it’s a scam.

Q: Where are the sources? I want to write a dark-mode theme and publish the jailbreak as my own.
A: checkra1n is released in binary form only at this stage. We plan to open-source later in 2020. We will release the full checkra1n source once we have a Windows GUI version. We had hoped to get there in 2020, but we didn’t manage to. But PongoOS, the kernel patchfinder and the SEP exploit are already open source on GitHub.

Q: When is Windows support coming?
A: Soon™. We need to write a kernel driver to support Windows which will take time. Rest assured however, we are working hard on it.

Apple TV Plus, Apple’s subscription video service, has Ted Lasso, the comedy that won a stack of Emmys last month; The Morning Show, its big-budget drama series starring A-listers Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon; and starting Friday, Swagger, a series about youth basketball based on NBA star Kevin Durant’s experiences; plus other originals. 

But Apple TV Plus is a little different from Netflix, HBO Max, Disney Plus and other subscription streaming services. 

For one, Apple TV Plus doesn’t have its own dedicated app (or channel). Its shows are inside the Apple TV app. (And the Apple TV app is different from the Apple TV streaming device. Yeah, it’s confusing.) 

Apple TV Plus also lacks a deep library of licensed shows and movies to dive into. The service has original programming almost exclusively, with an emphasis on big-budget, prestige series. Its lineup of high-end originals has grown to more than five dozen titles since it launched almost two years ago, including the ones listed above as well as See, a big-budget fantasy starring Jason Momoa; Foundation, the sci-fi show based on Isaac Asimov’s classic book series; Invasion, a drama series about an alien… invasion; and The Problem with Jon Stewart, the comedy host’s return to current affairs TV. 

Still, most other subscription streaming services have thousands of hours of programming to watch.

Here are the main things to know about Apple TV Plus. 

How do I watch Apple TV Plus? 

Every Apple TV Plus title — including Swagger, Ted Lasso and the rest — is available to all subscribers in the Apple TV app. Apple TV Plus is $5 a month, and a subscription unlocks the full catalog of original programming. 

But unlike Netflix and other subscription streaming services, Apple TV Plus doesn’t have its own dedicated app. Apple TV Plus programming resides inside Apple’s TV app, which overall serves as a hub to watch programming from other video subscriptions, and to rent or buy movies and shows a la carte. That can be a little confusing, but the TV app has a tab dedicated just to Apple TV Plus originals, so you can find them all in one place without other stuff that requires separate payments. 

Apple’s TV app (and, by extension, Apple TV Plus) is available on: 

• Apple devices that can stream video including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV streaming boxes, iPod Touch and Macs
• Roku
• Amazon Fire TV
• Android TV

Android users (and anybody with anything other than an iPhone and iPad), take note…

If you want to watch on an Android phone, or any mobile device besides an iPhone or iPad, you’ll have to watch in a web browser. Apple’s TV app isn’t available on any mobile devices except the ones Apple makes itself.

How much does Apple TV Plus cost?

Apple TV Plus costs $5 a month, or $50 for an annual subscription. By comparison, Disney Plus is $8 a month, with a library of movies and shows that dwarfs Apples. And Netflix, the world’s biggest subscription streaming service that also won the most Emmys of any company Sunday, prices its most popular plan at $13 a month in the US; it offers other tiers at $9 and $16 a month.

Apple is also including Apple TV Plus with its Apple Music student-discount plan, now offering both streaming services in the $5-a-month deal at no extra cost.

Apple TV Plus is also available as part of a discount bundle of services called Apple One. Apple One ranges in price from $15 to $30 a month for different combinations of subscriptions. Apple TV Plus is included in all tiers of Apple One. Depending on the tier, Apple One bundles may also include Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple News Plus, storage service iCloud and the guided-workout service Apple Fitness Plus. (Disney Plus had offered something similar by packaging that service with both Hulu and ESPN Plus.)

Does Apple TV Plus offer a free trial? 

Apple TV Plus offers a seven-day free trial standard for any new subscriber. 

As of July 1, Apple TV Plus offers an extended, three-month free trial to people who buy an iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod Touch or Mac. This extended free trial applies to both new and refurbished models, including devices from the iPhone Upgrade Program, and it’s not restricted to any specific sales channel, so it applies to both Apple Store purchases and those at resellers. It’s available in all countries where Apple TV Plus is operating. 

Back when Apple TV Plus launched in November 2019, the company offered an extended, one-year free trial for anyone who bought a qualifying Apple gadget. Even though Apple TV Plus is among the cheapest subscription streaming services of its kind, the generous promotion compensated for its lightweight library, which had only nine total titles to watch at the beginning. 

Then as Apple TV Plus slowly worked to widen its catalog of original programming, Apple kept extending those yearlong free trials past their expirations multiple times. Many subscribers had never paid for the service as long as it existed up through July 1. One analyst estimated that 62% of Apple TV Plus accounts were freeloading with some sort of promotion. 

But that changed in July. Apple began charging anyone who had been on a free trial longer than a year starting July 1, and any new subscriber who wants to unlock an extended free trial with an Apple gadget purchase gets only three months free now, not an entire year. 

Free trials were long the industry standard, but they are becoming more rare. Services like Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max and Peacock have all phased out their standard free trials for new members. And Apple’s one-year free period for gadget owners was atypically long. 

When do new episodes and movies hit Apple TV Plus? 

New episodes and films become available to stream on Apple TV Plus at midnight ET at the very start of the day they’re scheduled to come out. That means new titles are actually available at 9 p.m. PT the night before their published release date. 

So, for example, the premiere of The Morning Show’s second season became available to stream at midnight ET Friday, which was 9 p.m. PT Thursday. 

The vast majority of Apple TV Plus titles are released like this, at midnight Fridays ET / 9 p.m. Thursdays PT, so the latest episodes of See, Ted Lasso and almost everything else are first available to stream then too. There are some exceptions — The Problem With John Stewart will premiere at midnight ET on a Thursday (that is, late Wednesday PT), for example. 

What other big shows and movies are coming? 

Apple has a steady drumbeat of new programming in the pipeline. Generally, most Apple TV Plus series release their episodes one at a time every week: 

• Oct. 29 — Swagger, a drama series from Kevin Durant inspired by the NBA superstar’s experiences in youth basketball, exploring the lives of players, their families and coaches.
• Nov. 5 — Finch, a post-apocalyptic film starring Tom Hanks about a robotics engineer’s quest to create a companion for his beloved dog after he’s gone.
• Nov. 5 — Dickinson (season three), a comedy based loosely on the life of poet Emily Dickinson, with this season taking place in the midst of the American Civil War.
• Nov. 12 — The Shrink Next Door, a limited series starring Paul Rudd, Will Ferrell and Kathryn Hahn about a psychiatrist to the stars and his longtime patient, inspired by true events. 
• Dec. 17 — Swan Song, a film starring Mahershala Ali set in the near future about a father diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an option to shield his family from grief.

What other shows and movies does it have?

Apple’s shows run the gamut of drama, comedy, documentary — even undefined deals with a single big star attached. It’s also spending big to get top Hollywood names: Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams and other heavy hitters are on board. Apple also struck an exclusive deal with Alfonso Cuarón for the famed director’s first television projects. 

Since Apple TV Plus resides in Apple’s TV app, you can check out the selection there before signing up. You can also browse the catalog through third-party services like Reelgood. 

Apple’s press site also rounds up all Apple TV Plus original titles, including some that have been announced but aren’t released yet. 

Apple planned to give theater runs to some of its films before streaming them on Apple TV Plus, but the coronavirus pandemic has stifled those plans for the time being. 

How do I sign up? 

Apple TV Plus is associated with Apple ID, which is the same log-in you’d use for iCloud or downloading apps from its App Store. If you don’t already have an Apple ID, you can create one here. 

If you already have Apple’s TV app on an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, you simply need to open the app and navigate to any of the places where Apple is prominently promoting its original shows. On newly purchased iPhones, for example, the app already knows you’ve purchased a new gadget to qualify for the deal. Whether you’re starting Apple TV Plus with a year free or just the standard one-week trial, the shows start playing in the app after a few taps.

What devices can stream Apple TV Plus?

Apple’s programming is available on all its devices with the Apple TV app.

In addition, Apple TV Plus is available on some competitors’ devices. Apple’s TV app is available on Roku and Fire TV, two of the most widely used streaming devices in the US, and for smart TVs from Samsung and LG. You can watch it on Sony and Vizio smart TVs via AirPlay, and the TV app should be available for those smart TVs now. 

Apple widened support for Apple TV Plus to game consoles in the fall. In October, Sony said its Playstation 5 would support Apple TV Plus at launch. A couple of weeks later, Microsoft said Apple TV Plus would be supported on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Subscribers will also be able to watch Apple TV Plus on the web at tv.apple.com.

But the Apple TV app isn’t available on any mobile devices except iPhones or iPads. That means Apple TV Plus subscribers with non-Apple phones — meaning, the huge population of people with Android phones — need to stream to their mobiles via the web, rather than in an app. 

How do I cancel Apple TV Plus?

The simplest way for you to cancel Apple TV Plus, regardless of how you signed up or what device you’re using, is to sign in with your account’s Apple ID at tv.apple.com. Click or tap the small circular account icon in the upper right corner and select Settings. Then scroll down to Subscriptions and, finally, tap the link to Manage. From there, you can choose to cancel your subscription. 

How do I check the time left in my free trial?

You can check the remaining time of your free trial at the same Settings page described above, under the Subscriptions section. CNET also has an article explaining other ways to find the expiration date of your free trial on your iPhone or your Apple TV streaming box. 

How does Apple TV Plus compare with Netflix, Disney Plus and other subscription video services? 

Apple TV Plus is a subscription streaming service to watch the company’s original series and movies exclusively. Like Netflix, it doesn’t have ads. 

Unlike Netflix, it doesn’t have a big library of licensed shows or movies, nor will it release full seasons of its shows all at once in a binge-able bunch (for the most part). Most Apple TV Plus series premiere a small cluster of episodes, often three, followed by one new episode every week. Full seasons of some series drop all at the same time, though. 

Apple TV Plus is available in more than 100 countries and is also part of Apple’s family-sharing feature, which allows you to add up to five family members to share a plan. Apple originals are available in 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision, and most titles also offer Dolby Atmos sound, according to this Apple support page.

Apple is a gadget giant. Why does it want to become Netflix? 

Apple is taking aim at original video because it could be a crucial enticement for people to buy more iPhones and other gadgets. You can’t overstate the importance of the iPhone to Apple. The phone, one of the most popular in the world, still accounts for more than half its sales and was critical to Apple’s march to become the first US company worth $1 trillion. 

Apple quickly established its bona fides in subscriptions businesses with Apple Music. But the content on Apple Music is essentially the same as every other music service. They all have tens of millions of songs. Apple Music has been successful largely because of its presence on the iPhone, already in the pockets of millions of people. It hasn’t been nearly as successful working the other direction, acting as a lure to buy the latest Apple gadget.

Identical hubs, new remote

Five years between hardware releases would lead many to believe that the latest and greatest model would look drastically different. That’s simply not the case with the Apple TV 4K. Both generations look exactly the same, measuring 3.9 inches wide and 1.4 inches from top to bottom. In terms of color, there’s only one — black. Connections on the back of both units include power, HDMI, and an Ethernet jack for optional network gear hard-wiring.

The major design difference between both generations is Apple’s redesigned Siri remote. Packaged with the 2021 Apple TV 4K (and sold separately for $59 as a backward-compatible remote), the revamped remote boasts a brand-new appearance. Clad in 100% recycled aluminum, it’s sleeker and a hair longer than the previous generation, and it features a five-way directional pad, touch controls, power and mute buttons, along with a side-facing Siri button for those frustrated by accidentally hitting it on the old version.

Compare that to the 5th-gen remote’s touchpad-only design that forced many a user to swipe and tap through on-screen menus. At times it was easy, but the oversensitive pad could quickly become a nuisance. We’re betting the new remote’s added directional pad will take care of that issue. Apple’s 6th-gen remote also adds Bluetooth 5.0 and CEC support for compatible devices, allowing you to do things like power your TV on and off and adjust the volume on your A/V receiver using just your Apple TV remote.

Winner: Apple TV 4K (2021)

Identical user interface, improved performance

Both the 2017 and 2021 Apple TV 4K are built upon the same operating system, Apple’s tvOS 14 (based on iOS 14.4). The Apple TV home screen features rows and columns of your favorite apps, recommended content, as well as photos, games, the Apple App Store, and general device settings. Adding certain apps to the customizable top row allows you to watch previews of recommended movies, TV shows, music videos, games, and photos right on the home screen. Navigating is as simple as swiping or directional-padding your way through the on-screen apps and options. Once the app or item you want to open is highlighted, select it to launch the service. You can also use your remote’s Siri button to open apps and navigate around your Apple TV using voice commands.

In terms of overall performance, the 2017 Apple TV 4K is powered by Apple’s A10X Fusion chip. The 2021 model rocks Apple’s all-new A12X Fusion chip. This means faster frame-rate support during all video playback, quicker load times, and smoother navigation. The latest Apple TV also boasts an HDMI 2.1 output and support for Wi-Fi 6 for an improved streaming experience, app to app. Thanks to the faster chipset on the 2021 model, HDR can now be viewed at 60 frames per second, as compared to only 30fps on the previous model. Both units feature native support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

Another benefit for video connoisseurs is the addition of HDR picture tuning, native to the 2021 model and available through a software update on older Apple TV hardware. Similar to professional TV calibrations, the feature allows you to use a compatible iPhone (iOS 14.5 or later) to measure your TV’s colors against your Apple TV’s image output. The end result: A well-balanced image, brimming with color and appropriate brightness levels.

Smart home command center

Both the 5th- and 6th-gen Apple TVs can be used as command centers for your home’s Apple HomeKit smart ecosystem. You can use the streaming hub to view live video from your property’s web-connected smart cameras, lock and unlock compatible smart locks using the Siri remote, adjust smart thermostat temperature settings, and more.

AirPlay 2 is available on both 5th- and 6th-gen Apple TVs, allowing you to wirelessly cast video, photos, music, and your compatible iOS device screen to your Apple TV, letting you view and listen to content through your TV and home theater system.

Price and warranty

The 2021 Apple TV will sell for the same price(s) as the 2017 model. That’s $179 for 32GB of storage and $199 for the 64GB version. Apple provides a one-year limited warranty on Apple TV devices, with additional AppleCare plans available at the time of purchase. With the release of the 2021 Apple TV 4K right around the corner (pre-orders start April 30), Apple has already announced it’s discontinuing the 2017 Apple TV 4K. That means if you look hard enough, you might be able to start nabbing the 2017 model at end-of-life and/or refurbished prices (while supplies last).

Price-wise, Apple still demands more than the other guy. Competitive 4K streaming hubs from companies like Roku, Amazon, and Google are generally less expensive than Apple hardware while offering a number of the same key perks, like apps, games, UHD, and HDR support. That said, if you’re Apple-or-die, forking over a few extra dollars for Apple’s stream box probably won’t mean that much to you and yours in the grand scheme of things.

The verdict

Should you upgrade from your existing Apple TV 4K to the 2021 model? Probably not. Aside from a slight boost in performance and a new remote (which you can buy separately), the fundamentals of both the 2017 and 2021 models are essentially the same. If you’re buying your very first Apple TV, however, we’d recommend opting for the 2021 model. You’ll net yourself all the latest hardware perks and the HDR calibration tool for the same price as the previous generation.

The Apple TV is Apple’s set-top box that runs tvOS. The company currently sells the updated Apple TV HD first introduced in 2015 and the 2021 second-generation Apple 4K models. Alongside the two products, Apple also has the Apple TV app, which is available for iOS and Android users and lots of smart TV owners, and Apple TV+, the company’s video streaming service with exclusive original content.

History

The first-generation Apple TV was unveiled in September 2006. The product, which would be called iTV, couldn’t have this name since the British terrestrial broadcast network ITV already held the right to the name in the UK and threatened to take legal action against Apple.

Shipped six months later, the first Apple TV had a 40GB HDD, and a 160GB HDD option was later released.

The second-generation Apple TV was announced in September of 2010 and was the first model to run on a variant of iOS. In a smaller, all-black case, it was one-quarter the size of the original Apple TV. The HDD was replaced by 8GB of internal flash storage, enough for buffering purposes. Also different from the first set-top box, this one was only used for streaming content. It also supported output up to 720p over HDMI only.

The third-generation Apple TV was released almost two years later in March 2012. It included the A5 chip and support for 1080p output. As of 2021, the third-generation set-top box still works with streaming services including Apple TV+, Apple TV Channels, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix.

The fourth generation, or the Apple TV HD, was the biggest revamp to the set-top box in years, and it launched in September 2015. With a brand-new black remote charged via Lightning cable, it introduced the tvOS operating system with an App Store allowing downloads of third-party apps for video, audio, games, and other content. This device includes the A8 processor and support for Dolby Digital Plus.

Two years later, in September of 2017, Apple introduced the fifth-generation Apple TV, or the Apple TV 4K, which supports 2160p output, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and includes the A10X Fusion processor. This model is similar to the fourth-generation model with the only difference being the addition of vents on the base and the removal of the USB-C port.

The sixth-generation Apple TV, or the second-generation Apple TV 4K, was introduced in April of 2021. With a similar design to its predecessor, the main change is the A12 chip and the second-generation Siri Remote.

Apple TV HD (fourth-generation)

Launched in 2015, the Apple TV HD uses the A8 chip with 64-bit architecture. It supports videos up to 1080p and 60 fps. Only available in 32GB storage option, the set-top box uses the second-generation Siri Remote, featuring Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology, an IR transmitter, and a Lightning connector for charging.

Second-generation Siri Remote

Alongside the new Apple TV 4K, the company introduced a redesigned Siri Remote. It is made of aluminum and rubber buttons. It has a microphone for Siri, an IR transmitter, a Lightning connector for charging, and uses Bluetooth 5.0 technology.

In an interview with Apple Vice President of Product Marketing for Home and Audio Tim Twerdahl, the new remote is inspired by the iPod click wheel:

“Once we came up with this circular design we thought it looked a lot like the iPod quick wheel, so what could do that could really help people with their TV using an interface like that? The scrubbing of the video came as such a natural thing, professional editors often use these jog-style controls, which are quite powerful, and it’s really nice to bring this into people’s living room.“

Although it was rumored, the second-generation Siri Remote doesn’t have a U1 chip to help users find the accessory when it gets lost on the couch. According to Tim Twerdahl, the thicker design of the remote chassis means it won’t get lost in couch cushions as much as the previous generation.

Third-party certified Apple TV Remote

In August of 2021, Deutsche Telekom started offering a third-party certified Apple TV Remote. This is the first company to offer Universal Electronics’ remote control to customers who purchase a new Apple TV 4K directly with the carrier with a Magenta TV subscription.

The alternative Siri Remote from Universal Electronics looks more like a classic TV remote control since it does not have a trackpad and comes with buttons for switching channels and accessing the TV guide. However, it also includes all the buttons needed to navigate through tvOS, including the Siri button and even a built-in microphone.

tvOS 15: what’s new to the Apple TV

Apple released on September 20 tvOS 15, the operating system to the Apple TV HD and 4K (1st and 2nd gen). Here’s everything new with it:

Verdict

If you have the previous-gen Apple TV 4K and are happy with it, then this probably isn’t for you. For everyone else, this is the best overall streaming box around thanks to fantastic app support, great pictures quality and plenty of welcome extras.

Introduction

The Apple TV 4K 2021 is the latest high-end, high-priced and high-performing streaming box from the makers of the iPhone 12.

While Amazon, Roku and Google are in a race to the bottom when it comes to pricing for streaming sticks and boxes, Apple is heading in a different direction. Similar to the Nvidia TV Pro, this is a pricey box that focuses on quality and performance.

If you want the best streaming box experience and aren’t fussed about saving a few pennies in the process, then this is the one to go for. It’s even better if you’re in the Apple ecosystem, and a no-brainer if you, like me, have invested heavily in iTunes content over the years.

Design

The new 2021 edition of the Apple TV 4K looks identical to the outgoing model. It also looks just like the 1080p model that’s available (but is very overpriced and worth ignoring).

This isn’t a bad thing as it remains a sleek, minimalist black box that’ll blend into your media unit without much hassle.

It would have been nice if Apple had swapped out the glossy finish for a matte one to try and stem the sheer amount of dust that gathers around the sides – but that’s my only complaint about the design.

It’s a simple looking box

The fact that this is a streaming box at all sets it apart from the competition, many of which are now purely stuck that plug directly into a spare HDMI port. Options like the Chromecast with Google TV, Fire TV Stick and so on take up less space than the Apple TV 4K and are far more portable. However, unless you’re really tight on space this isn’t really an issue.

Inside the Apple TV 4K 2021’s box, you’ll find, well, very little. There’s the new remote and a charging cable, plus a plug. Basic, straightforward stuff. You won’t find an HDMI cable included which, for the price, seems stingy.

The Siri Remote that shipped with the previous Apple TV 4K was a thing of ridicule. It was too thin, too light and the trackpad too prone to accidental touches. The merest of swipes would bring it to life and it was an absolute nightmare if you had a wandering dog that liked to jump on it.

It’s taken a few years, but Apple has finally redesigned the remote and it’s a huge improvement. It’s far from the best remote I have ever used, but considering just how bad the older one was, it makes all the difference.

Old vs New Siri remotes

Instead of being a thin, slippery and light remote that seemed to have a great skill at getting caught between in a sofa, this new version is a thick slab of aluminium. It’s longer, weightier and now has a slightly curved back.

Apple hasn’t completely killed the trackpad and it clearly still believes swiping is a better than clicking. The pad is now centred in the middle of a click wheel that’s not too dissimilar to the classic iPod. You can navigate through the menus either by swiping or by clicking, and it’s more responsive than before.

Below the wheel, you’ve got a selection of very clicky buttons. There’s one for altering the volume, another for playing/pausing and a welcome mute switch that’s a nice addition. There’s also a new ‘Back’ button that sits alongside a TV button that’ll either take you to the main app screen or to Apple’s TV app.

The Siri key has been moved to the side, just like on an iPhone, and there’s a very small power button right at the top that’ll turn a TV off or on. At the bottom, there’s a Lightning port for charging. After an initial charge, I have been using the remote every day for weeks and it’s barely used up any juice.

It’s nice to see a remote that isn’t overloaded with branded buttons for random streaming services you’ll never use. I guess that’s just not necessary when the Apple TV 4K is quite so expensive.

You can also buy it separately if have the previous Apple TV 4K or HD model and just want the new remote. At £55 / $59 it’s pricey. As a comparison, the remote alone is roughly the same price as the whole Google TV with Chromecast package.

While it’s most definitely nicer to use, the new remote isn’t as smart as the previous model and in my opinion, not as smart as it should be. The accelerometers that let you use the remote as a game controller have been ditched. Hardly a big deal, but a bit odd nevertheless. It also seems even stranger Apple hasn’t fitted this remote with the UWB tech that powers the AirTag. Being able to precisely find the remote with your iPhone when its caught behind a cushion would make so much sense.

Interface and apps

Apple’s software approach to its TV box is the same as its takes with its phones and tablets. The basic operating system is the same on this new box as the previous generation and it’ll get frequent updates. The TvOS slated for release later this year will add Spatial Audio, a feature I was surprised to learn wasn’t already present.

That means that if you’re upgrading from an older Apple TV you won’t notice anything particularly different.

Setup is easy if you have an iPhone handy – just hold it close to the Apple TV 4K and most of the initial setup can be done from the phone. This is very welcome when installing and logging in to multiple streaming apps. No iPhone? It’s still all fairly straightforward but with more remote text input.

The home screen is a big grid of apps, with a top portion highlighting certain content from supported apps. Click into the Apple TV app and things get a bit more interesting.

This is Apple’s content hub, pulling together shows from multiple streaming services and an iTunes film and TV library. You’ve got a watch list, plus rows upon rows of recommended shows. Clicking on something to watch takes you right into it, even if it’s from another app. Big streaming services like Disney Plus, Now, Prime, iPlayer and more are available so if you play things right you’ll spend most of your time in this TV app. Netflix, however, does not.

A lot of this app is taken up by Apple TV Plus, and the original shows that come along with the £4.99 / $4.99 per month streaming service. It’s not quite as in-your-face as Prime Video on an Amazon Fire Stick, but if you don’t subscribe to TV Plus you’ll find the constant mentions of it annoying.

In terms of app support, the Apple TV 4K is up there with Roku and Fire TV in terms of broad app support, and I so far haven’t spotted a missing service. In the UK, you’ve got all for the major TV channels (iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4 and Channel 5) plus the usual stalwarts like Disney+, Prime Video and Netflix.

There’s also Now, which supports the higher frame rate playback of sports if you subscribe to the Boost add-on and BT Sport. While the BT Sport app does support 4K, it is missing HDR. There’s also AirPlay, a handy way of streaming other content from your phone to the box. 

The only obvious missing app I noticed was Google Play Movies, however you’ll be able to playback your purchased Google content through the YouTube app so that’s far from a big loss.

You’ll get 4K and HDR (either through HDR10 or Dolby Vision) through any app that supports it too. The only missing trick here is that there’s no HLG HDR support in iPlayer, meaning this box won’t stream events like Wimbledon in UHD. That’s a shame.

It’s great if you have lots of iTunes movies

For audio, Apple Music now supports Dolby Atmos and there are apps for Spotify, Amazon Music and others. 

Performance

So far, remote aside, there hasn’t been much to separate this Apple TV 4K from the last version. It has the same design, the same software and with the remote being sold separately there’s little to warrant the upgrade.

Hardware-wise though, there are some improvements. The chipset powering the box has been upgraded, from the A10X to the A12 and while this isn’t Apple’s latest chip (it was first used in the iPhone XS in 2018) it makes for the snappiest streaming box around.

There’s also Wi-Fi 6 if you have the right router and support for Thread – a new smart home protocol that Apple already supports with the HomePod Mini. The Apple TV 4K can already act as a hub for your smart home tech and this will help futureproof that.

Around the back of the box is an HDMI 2.1 port and gigabit ethernet which you should use if your home Wi-Fi isn’t that reliable.

While it’s nice to see HDMI 2.1 here like it is on a PS5 or Xbox Series X, it isn’t really being used for much at this stage and will only be relevant to those with a compatible TV.

While those consoles can push out 4K 120fps content, the Apple TV 4K tops out at 4K HDR 60fps – which Apple labels as ‘high frame rate HDR’. Content that plays in this format is tough to find, with YouTube and RedBull TV so far the only places I have spotted it. Still, hopefully in the future this tech will be helpful in sport-focussed streaming services.

On the back there’s HDMI 2.1, power input and gigabit ethernet

You don’t need an iPhone nor any other Apple tech to use an Apple TV, however being part of the ecosystem does expand the functionality of this box. The remote control app for iOS lets you use a keyboard for text entry and if you’ve got some AirPods you can funnel the audio from the TV to the buds.

The Apple TV 4K supports a whole load of HDR formats, including HDR10, HLG (not supported via iPlayer, though) and Dolby Vision. The only missing format is HDR10+, which isn’t widely used anyway. For audio, you’ve got all the usual standards (MP3, AAC, ALAC) along with surround formats up to Dolby Atmos.

If you used the previous Apple TV 4K you will be familiar with the slightly quirky way the box handles HDR. If you set the box up with the 4K HDR option selected, everything that comes out of the box will be in this format – even if the content you’re viewing is SDR. This is particularly odd if you’re watching something from an app like iPlayer as colours appear washed-out. I’d recommend you select the output at 4K, and then select the ‘Match Dynamic Range’ option. This will only output in HDR when the source supports it.

I’ve been reviewing this Apple TV 4K on a number of different TVs. A higher-end Samsung Q85T with an HDMI 2.1 port, mid-range 2017 LG Nanocell and a budget Hisense 4K model.

Obviously, the strength of the picture will vary depending on your setup, but with each TV I tested the Apple TV 4K pumped out out a better picture than the built-in streaming apps. It’s also the best for pure picture quality when compared to other streaming devices, like the Chromecast with Google TV. When compared to Google’s offering, the Apple TV 4K offers more brightness and more vibrant colours. But then you should be expecting that, considering the price.

I have also been comparing the previous Apple TV 4K to the new model and while there are improvements, I am not sure you’d notice them unless you go looking. The biggest difference is with the contrast in HDR movies, with the Samsung Q85T providing deeper blacks with the newer model plugged in. Still, the older model remains better than much of the competition.

A new feature Apple introduced alongside the new Apple TV 4K (but that works on older models too) is Adjust Colour Balance. This uses the Face ID sensor on an iPhone (X or newer, but not the SE 2) to calibrate your television to provide a better picture – or at least that’s the idea.

It’s a very quick process; you just need to hold your phone up to the display for a few seconds while numerous colours pop in and out. While the results didn’t make much difference on my higher-end or mid-range televisions, they added a notable extra pop to the colour on the budget Hisense model. These settings only work for the Apple TV though, so it’s not calibrating the whole TV.

Should you buy it?

You want the best, no-compromise streaming box: The Apple TV 4K is great at streaming content in excellent quality. It supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and has the App Store for all the big apps.

You’re on a budget: There’s no getting around the fact that even though this is a fully-featured box, there is a myriad of cheaper options available that do very much the same thing.

Final Thoughts

The Apple TV 4K 2021 is the best streaming box around and a worthy purchase if you’re happy to dismiss the much cheaper competition. It’s less of an instant recommendation for those who have the previous-gen model, though.

Yes, the remote is a big upgrade, but you can buy that separately, and the new model isn’t a big upgrade unless you really want the futureproofing of HDM 2.1, Thread and Wi-Fi 6.

Still, if you’re looking to upgrade your home cinema setup or you’ve recently bagged one of the best TVs around, this is an ideal companion. The breadth of 4K HDR content is ace, the UI slick and quick and you’ll get plenty of updates from Apple.

HDMI

HDR content preserves details in the darkest and brightest areas of a picture, details that are often lost in old imaging standards. HDR10 is mandated to be included on all HDR TVs. It’s also supported by 4K projectors.

Dolby Vision is a variant of HDR, adding a layer of dynamic metadata to the core HDR signal. When Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) announced its plan to release a program that scans for images of child sexual abuse, there was immediate pushback from academics and privacy groups. Late Thursday, an Apple software vice president, Sebastien Marineau-Mes, distributed an internal memo emphasizing the company’s commitment both to protecting children and to people’s privacy.

9to5Mac obtained a copy of the memo and reprinted it in its entirety on Friday. Marineau-Mes said, in part, “What we announced today [the Expanded Children’s Protection Program] is the product … that delivers tools to protect children, but also maintain[s] Apple’s deep commitment to user privacy.”

The memo goes to say that the company has received many positive comments and that “more than a few” people expressed concerns about the implications of the program. Among the positive comments, Marineau-Mes included in the memo an email from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) addressed to “Team Apple” and thanking them for “the incredible decisions you have made in the name of prioritizing child protection.”

In his weekly newsletter posted Sunday, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that the “Apple TV box has lost its purpose as content moves to more devices.” This despite an upgrade to Apple TV in April. Why should even the staunchest Apple customer pay $199 for something that costs too much for too little return? Now that every streaming service is available on every device, the Apple TV box offers little, if anything, in the way of exclusive content.

The one thing Apple TV does offer is tight integration with loyalists: “Integration with HomeKit, Fitness+, AirPods and the iOS remote app is useful. The new remote control and faster chip in this year’s version are definite improvements, and the box is getting SharePlay and Spatial Audio support later this year.”

Now that Apple has closed the first half of 2021 with year-over-year revenue growth of nearly 54% in the March quarter and more than 36% in the June quarter, what can investors look forward to in the second half of the year?

Loup Venture analysts Gene Munster and David Stokman have put together a report on seven major tech companies, including Apple, comparing revenue growth in the second half of 2019 to expected growth in the second half of 2021. In the final six months of 2019, Apple’s revenue grew by just 5.4%, the lowest of all but one of the companies included in Loup’s comparison (Tesla had a loss in the second half of 2019).

Munster and Stokman estimate that Apple’s revenue will rise by 18.4% in the back half of this year, better than three of its peers: Netflix’s projected 16.5% increase; Amazon, up 15.3%; and Microsoft, up 14.2%. Apple trails Tesla (expected increase of 42.8%), Google (up 30%) and Facebook (up 29.7%). The analysts base their estimates for Apple on “a multiyear 5G upgrade cycle and the accelerating digital transformation, including work and learn from anywhere.”
