Even if it’s not a brand-new model, if you have an LG smart TV, you’ll soon have access to Apple’s original TV content. LG announced in a release that its OLED and NanoCell televisions will now support the Apple TV app — and not just the new 2020 models but its 2019 and 2018 versions as well.

That means LG TV users won’t need a separate set-top box to get Apple TV Plus, iTunes, or other original Apple programming. LG’s release said only that those with 2018 and 2019 LG TV models would be able to “enjoy the Apple TV app this year.” The Verge has reached out to LG to find out when the older TVs will have access to the Apple TV app, and we will update when we hear back.

It’s smart for LG to make the Apple TV app available for its slightly older models. As 9to5Mac points out, LG originally restricted support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to 2019 and newer models of its TVs, leading annoyed users of older models to petition LG last January to provide the necessary firmware updates for their TVs. The petitioners pointed out that rival companies Samsung and Vizio offered support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit for their older models via firmware updates, perhaps exerting some pressure on LG to make Apple TV available to its recent older models.

The Apple TV app was available on launch day for Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and recent Samsung TVs. The app is preinstalled in newer iPhones, iPads, and on devices running macOS Catalina or later. Once activated, Apple TV Plus is free for 12 months on those devices. For everyone else, the service is $4.99 per month after a seven-day free trial. Apple’s original programming, which includes the star-studded The Morning Show, has so far been met with mixed reviews. Apple was completely shut out at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, despite Best Actress nominations for stars Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

LG announced eight 8K TVs ahead of this week’s CES, and all have Alexa, Google Assistant, HomeKit, and AirPlay 2 included. The TVs range in size from 65 inches for its LCDs up to 88 inches for its new OLED model.

If you are an Apple device owner you have probably heard of Apple TV and maybe you are already using it. It is a powerful device for streaming music, movies and your favorite TV shows. Apple TV connects your mobile phone with your TV and thanks to its pre-installed apps you have a full pack of features right away. However, if you are wondering how to add apps to Apple TV the answer is not simple.

What generation of Apple TV do you have?

If you have the 4th and the 5th generation of Apple TV we have good news for you. You can add apps to Apple TV. 

In addition to default apps that are installed on your Apple TV, you can go to the app store and install new apps. The process of installing apps on Apple TV is pretty straightforward, but a bit different from installing apps on mobile phones. Depending on the app you purchased for your iPhone, you can redownload it on your Apple TV. Simply access the option Not on This Apple TV from the Apple TV Purchased menu and check the list of apps you can download. 

Another way is to simply browse the app store for Apple TV and download new applications. If the app is free there will be Get button and if it is paid, you will see the option to buy. For those apps you already have on your iPhone or iPad, it will ask you install the app again. 

Unfortunately, if you own older generations of Apple TV you cannot easily add apps to it. However, there are workaround ways:

• Use AirPlay to stream the apps you have on your iPhone or iPad
• Jailbreak your Apple TV (warning: jailbreaking can turn bad if you are not skilled enough to do it and your device may become unusable)

How to update apps on Apple TV

Apart from adding new applications to Apple TV, you can of course update the old ones. Usually, it is set up by default that the apps are updated automatically, but if you for some reason want to turn off that option, you can always update apps manually. 

By default, apps are automatically updated when new versions are released. You can turn this feature on or off.

As usual with Apple devices, you just need to find the app you want to update in the app store and see if there’s an option to update it.

How to delete apps from Apple TV

If you for some reason want to remove an app from your Apple TV, select the app and hold until the option to Play or Pause appears.

Click on the Delete button to remove the app. Have in mind that all information will be deleted that has to do with that app.

Apple could be about to refresh its Apple TV set-top box line-up, according to new rumours on Monday.

A report from The Verifier (via 9to5Mac) outlines a potential Apple TV 6 model, as well as some key tvOS 14 updates in the coming weeks and months.

As for the box itself, it appears the key improvement might be boosting the storage options. Currently, Apple offers 32GB and 64GB drives, but that may expand to 64GB and 128GB if Apple adds a new model.

The thinking behind this decision is to ensure Apple Arcade subscribers have enough room to download all of those App Store games to their set-top boxes, without having to constantly make room.

In changes that would probably be made available for owners of current-generation Apple TV devices, Apple is planning on bringing its Screen Time app to the tvOS platform, according to today’s reports.

That would be handy for those attempting to spend less time sat in front of the television set. It would also be handy for parents looking to keep tabs on just how much content their children are watching on a week-by-week basis.

Speaking of the wee ones, there’s also going to be a new Kids mode for tvOS, the report says. That, like in iOS, would enable parents to have more granular control over what kids can access via the Apple TV set-top box.

As for when Apple would launch the new models, that remains unclear. It’d likely be something Apple rolled out quietly, as it did with the new MacBook Air, iPad Pro and Mac mini models last week.

Any major changes to tvOS would likely be announced at whatever form WWDC takes this summer and rolled out in the autumn, if Apple is able to keep to its traditional reveal and release schedule for new software updates.

The recent talks and rumors have started to spread regarding what the next Apple TV might have as far as new features, specifications, and when it might be released.

The latest rumor regarding the upcoming six generation Apple TV model has to do with the possible date release, new features, and specifications. Rumor has it some of the new features that might be included are: a gaming machine, a combined digital media player with Apple’s set-top box, and a platform for apps with the ability to stream content from iOS devices as well as from Mac computers to a TV.

As far as rumors on the specs, talk has it the Apple TV could add options of 128GB and 256GB models, this would come in handy for streaming and storing content in iCloud. The price should be expected to be similar to the fifth generation Apple TV  if minor changes occur, but if Apple makes some major changes on the Apple TV, expect to see an adjustment in cost.
