What is the Apple TV 4K?

The Apple TV 4K is the latest of Apple’s streaming boxes. Apple TV releases are rarely updated, but we’ve now had two in as many years because of the advent of 4K Ultra HD and HDR (high dynamic range) TVs.

4K TVs have become the standard. It’s possible to get decent ultra-high-definition sets for well under £1000 now, and many also support HDR. Both these technologies make a huge difference to the viewing experience. 4K makes everything sharper than it was in the HD era, but it’s HDR that’s the truly exciting step forward.

In essence, HDR provides more vibrant colours, extra brightness and greater contrast, rendering the viewing experience gorgeously cinematic. Of course, this is simplifying things somewhat. If you want greater detail, then read our explainer articles linked below.

Impressively, the Apple TV 4K supports not just the entry-level HDR10 HDR standard, but also the more impressive Dolby Vision platform. This adds extra scene-by-scene data to improve HDR playback.

The new Apple TV is faster, smoother and smarter than previous versions, too. It has a rich ecosystem of apps and is easy to use.

If you’ve recently bought a high-end smart TV from a top manufacturer you may question whether the 4K Apple TV is worth it. While Apple’s new box of tricks is a harder sell in such circumstances, it still has plenty going for it, especially now that recent firmware improvements have sorted out some initial problems.

But that’s not to say Apple isn’t up against some tough competition. The non-4K Now TV Smart Box is a user-friendly alternative, and the new 4K/HDR Amazon Fire TV is both a good performer and significantly cheaper.

Apple TV 4K – Design and specifications

The Apple TV is a neat little black box. It’s the same size as the previous model and even looks almost identical, bar a small circular vent at the bottom.

A vent often means a fan, and indeed the Apple TV 4K comes with a unit to keep it cool when it’s pushed. Don’t worry, though: no matter what I put the 4K Apple TV through, it remained whisper-quiet. I didn’t hear the faintest whirr or whistle.

Ever since the first iPhone was out, every iOS device got a jailbreak within a year of its initial release and with Checkra1n, the community got a positive boost since all versions of iOS can be jailbroken on A11 and older devices. However, the Apple TV 3rd generation didn’t get much love but now, it’s finally been jailbroken and for the newest devices, there’s also some good news on the horizon!

Unlike the iPhone and iPad, the Apple TV is seen as a side offering in Apple’s lineup and while it’s gained popularity in some circles, adoption is still nowhere as high as Apple’s iOS devices.

As a result, interest in jailbreaking Apple TV devices is pretty limited but the Apple TV 2nd generation, 4th generation and 4K are permanently jailbroken thanks to the BootROM exploits that affect them and because more developers showed interest in them. However, the Apple TV 3rd generation didn’t see any love and was left without a jailbreak partially because finding an entry point on the Apple TV firmware is more difficult than on iOS and because of the aforementioned lack of interest.

Now, that has finally changed as tihmstar, who’s behind jailbreaking iOS 8.4.1 and 9.3.5/6 with Siguza et al among other contributions, has released EtasonATV which is capable of jailbreaking Apple TV Firmware 7.4 (12H876; based on iOS 8.4.3) on the AppleTV3,2 with support for AppleTV3,1 units coming when someone steps in to help him with some minor things. Installing this jailbreak is a little different than traditional jailbreaks as it requires you to set a custom DNS address, add a profile and then open the Trailers app in order to jailbreak your device. After that, you can install a DEB file via SSH which gives you an untethered jailbreak (you needn’t apply it every reboot) for your device! For those asking why you should jailbreak an Apple TV, the main reason right now is the ability to install Kodi/XBMC (installation instructions).

Kernel Bug affecting iOS 13.2.2 and lower that can potentially result in a jailbreak shared by Ian Beer of Project Zero

Moving over to newer versions of iOS, some exciting news has just dropped for those with A12/A13 devices running iOS 13 since the checkra1n jailbreak doesn’t support these devices. Due to this, these devices rely on app-based jailbreaks, like unc0ver and Electra, which make use of kernel exploits and have been the norm ever since 2016 (iOS 9.2/9.3).

If the kernel bug that Ian Beer just shared gets turned into a tfp0 exploit, unc0ver will probably get iOS 13 support!

There are even shows that have gotten critical acclaim, like Little America and Visible: Out on TV.

More Apple TV+ originals will be added each month.

Here’s the bad news: If you plan to take advantage of the free trial and watch everything in one week, you’ll be sorely disappointed. While some shows dropped all episodes at once, others are rolling out weekly.

For instance, all episodes of Dickinson launched on November 1. However, only three episodes were made available at launch for The Morning Show, See and For all Mankind, with the rest released weekly.

But Apple TV+ does have some big plans in store for the following months, with plenty of titles currently in production. The platform seems to be focusing on feel-good/inspiring content overall, although some thrillers and dramas could boast a darker tone.

There are two ATV3 models (A1427 and A1469) and jailbreak has been discovered for A1469, the latest one. Looks like A1427 is in the works. More info in this article.

This opens the possibility of running PlexConnect in the ATV3 without the need of a separate computer. It’s a bit early to advise PlexConnect users to jb their ATV3’s, but testing is welcome.

Well, I did it knowing that I would possibly lose Plex connect and I did. But I just saw an announcement for a Plex connect update. Will it work with the latest version of tvOS for ATV three?

Is tvOS available for ATV3 ?

I’m using firmware 7.4 (iOS 8.4.3) in my ATV3 and PlexConnect 0.7 is ok.

Was just calling it that for lack of another name. The main thing apple did was add a way to use TV+

I sent your Wiki guide to JTV who is creating a script to automatically do all of this stuff. He got PO’d cos he’s in the middle of compiling and I bombarded him with links haha. My main concern is having the ability to use an alternate app rather than Trailers, or if I need to worry about that.

Apple TV 6: specifications

The latest leak comes from a Twitter user Jioriku who says that Apple TV 2020 should launch in September. It will boast an A12X Bionic chipset inside. The event will likely have the iPhone 12 series to be the stars of the show.

As for the design, the new Apple TV isn’t expected to bring in a big change in design and colours. The overall footprint of a three-year-old Apple TV 5 is expected to be retained though.

Being introduced in 2018, the A12X packs quite the punch. Clocked at 2.49GHz, the silicon is built on a 7nm FinFET process by Taiwan’s TSMC.

Better Thermals

This points to improved thermals with a new cooling solution. This could be a big bump compared to previous model with the A10X Fusion. 

Further, Jioriku says the new Apple TV will come with new storage configurations. Though he hasn’t mentioned the specifics of it, an earlier tip by Jon Prosser says the streaming box will come with 4K support and have 64/128GB configurations.

This bigger storage, when paired with an alleged gaming Controller that Apple is rumoured to be developing, will open a new door for the Apple arcade that got extended to the TV service almost a year back.

Why did Apple scrap it?

Apple was earlier prepared to unveil the new Apple TV on June 22nd. According to Jioriku, the decision was held back on the verge of the event as Apple somehow realised the September event will most likely be a similar virtual event. 

Considering the current situation, holding a physical event is out of the equation now and this could have made Apple think of postponing the Apple TV launch to September to make it even bigger, says the tipster.

The keynote in September is likely to be focused more on the Hardware perspective where Apple could also talk more about the ARM-powered Macbooks. He further says the Macbooks and iMacs are expected to come in both Intel and Apple’s own ARM chips however, the current focus will be on Macbooks.
