We’ve been hearing rumours of an Apple “Christmas Surprise” since last month, and while we weren’t quite sure originally what to make of those, they seemed to solidify last week when reports surfaced of a mysterious new product launch scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Since Apple still has a lot of rumoured-but-not-yet-announced products in its portfolio, it opens up quite a lot of room for speculation. Among the more exciting possibilities are AirTags or AirPods Studio, both of which have clearly been in development now for years, but there’s also quite a lot of room for the mundane, such as the likelihood of an Intel 16-inch MacBook Pro.

In fact, as boring as it may be, from a purely pragmatic point of view, it’s the 16-inch MacBook Pro that strikes us as the most likely possibility, since an Apple Silicon equipped version of the larger model could still be up to a year away, and meanwhile, it’s been languishing behind its smaller siblings as the only Pro-level Mac still equipped with a mere 9th-gen Intel CPU. Plus, we’ve already seen a leaked reference to it in Apple’s own Boot Camp utility.

That said, there’s no reason that Apple couldn’t release more than one product, and now a new set of rumours is pointing to the dark horse in this race: Apple’s diminutive Apple TV set-top box.

While AirTags and AirPods Studio are exciting new products, it’s hard to believe that Apple would debut those without giving them some stage time. While that might be the case for the AirPods Studio on-ear headphones, since Apple even pushed out the AirPods Pro last year with nothing more than a press release, we’d be shocked if Apple did that for a genre-defining product like the AirTags.

On the other hand, the Apple TV is now one of the oldest products that Apple is still selling, with the current model, the Apple TV 4K, having been released over three years ago, in the fall of 2017, and the older Apple TV HD model being of a 2015 vintage.

To put this in perspective, the Apple TV 4K was released the same year as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and beat the original HomePod out by about five months (while Apple announced the Home in June of 2017, it wasn’t available until the following February).

So in other words, since the Apple TV was last updated, we’ve seen at least five new generations of iPhone models, four generations of iPads, two generations of iPad Pro, and the rise and continued development of the whole new iPad Air lineup.

We’ve also seen the advent of Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ — two services that we were sure would have heralded the arrival of a new Apple TV last year, but clearly Apple had other things on its plate and decided that the A10X-equipped Apple TV 4K was good enough for the time being.

You do this by going to Settings -> General -> Reset, and selecting restore.

If that doesnt work, you can also plug it into a computer with Micro USB, and use iTunes to restore.

Apple Watch 6 review: What I like

• Blood Oxygen app: I’m happy to report both that I received 99% blood oxygen levels readings (above 95% is considered normal, although my father, a former EMT, says he wouldn’t want to see me below 98%), and that the Blood Oxygen app is pretty thorough. It offers a brief blood oxygen synopsis and walks users through taking on-demand readings.
• Brighter always-on display: Indoors, it’s obvious that the Apple Watch 6’s display is brighter than the Apple Watch 5’s, as advertised. Outside, in direct sunlight, the difference is less noticeable. However, when I looked back at some side-by-side images it seemed the Apple Watch 6’s screen in fact shined brighter.
• New watch faces and third-party complications: Apple launched all-new watch faces that will actually make you ditch Infographic. I’m a fan of the Typograph face’s bold design, although the Stripes, Memoji and Artist options are great for showing off your personality, too. The good ‘old modular faces are better than ever thanks to added support for third-party complications, though.

(Pocket-lint) – Apple’s TV service – Apple TV+ – offers a range of new and exclusive content to subscribers. Apple is taking on the likes of Netflix, Amazon Video and Disney+, looking to get you to subscribe to its service – but you’ll also be able to access Apple TV+ on a wide range of platforms.

Access through Apple devices is easy enough – just head to the Apple TV app on your iPad, iPhone or Mac – but you’ll also be able to access it through smart TVs and, importantly, a range of streaming boxes. 

While your TV might not off offer the app – unless you have the latest Samsung TV – the best way to get access to Apple’s content is going to be via Roku or Amazon’s Fire TV Stick where the Apple TV app is available.

The cheapest way to get Apple TV+ on your TV is with either the Roku Express or the new Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite. Both these devices are affordable, but only support up to 1080p streaming.

If you are connecting to a TV that only supports Full HD then that’s no problem, you won’t be missing out, making either of these devices a great choice for a second TV or a bedroom TV. The Roku Express is a small box that connects via cable to your TV’s HDMI input. 

It comes with an IR remote – so you need line of sight – but it’s very easy to navigate the interface and there’s support for a wide range of TV services beyond Apple TV – Netflix, Amazon Video, BBC iPlayer, Now TV, Hulu, HBO Now and more depending on your region. The downside is that it doesn’t support HDR.

Alternatively, the Amazon Fire TV Stick plugs straight into your TV giving you access to a wide range of services. Naturally it’s designed for Amazon’s content first, but also supports Netflix, Apple TV and a lot more.

Coming from Amazon it supports Alexa too, meaning you can use voice searching right from the remote. While it’s also 1080p only, it does support some HDR formats.

If you’re more interested in taking advantage of Apple’s support for 4K HDR content, then you’ll need something a little more advanced, although not much more expensive. While Apple TV 4K might seem like the obvious choice, you can get access to the TV services for much less money.

Remember that you not only get access to Apple TV+ through the Apple TV app – but all the iTunes TV content you may have purchased in the past too.

If you are an Apple device owner you have probably heard of Apple TV and maybe you are already using it. It is a powerful device for streaming music, movies and your favorite TV shows. Apple TV connects your mobile phone with your TV and thanks to its pre-installed apps you have a full pack of features right away. However, if you are wondering how to add apps to Apple TV the answer is not simple.

What generation of Apple TV do you have?

If you have the 4th and the 5th generation of Apple TV we have good news for you. You can add apps to Apple TV. 

In addition to default apps that are installed on your Apple TV, you can go to the app store and install new apps. The process of installing apps on Apple TV is pretty straightforward, but a bit different from installing apps on mobile phones. Depending on the app you purchased for your iPhone, you can redownload it on your Apple TV. Simply access the option Not on This Apple TV from the Apple TV Purchased menu and check the list of apps you can download. 

Another way is to simply browse the app store for Apple TV and download new applications. If the app is free there will be Get button and if it is paid, you will see the option to buy. For those apps you already have on your iPhone or iPad, it will ask you install the app again. 

Unfortunately, if you own older generations of Apple TV you cannot easily add apps to it. However, there are workaround ways:

• Use AirPlay to stream the apps you have on your iPhone or iPad
• Jailbreak your Apple TV (warning: jailbreaking can turn bad if you are not skilled enough to do it and your device may become unusable)

How to update apps on Apple TV

Apart from adding new applications to Apple TV, you can of course update the old ones. Usually, it is set up by default that the apps are updated automatically, but if you for some reason want to turn off that option, you can always update apps manually. 

By default, apps are automatically updated when new versions are released. You can turn this feature on or off.

As usual with Apple devices, you just need to find the app you want to update in the app store and see if there’s an option to update it.

How to delete apps from Apple TV

If you for some reason want to remove an app from your Apple TV, select the app and hold until the option to Play or Pause appears.

Click on the Delete button to remove the app. Have in mind that all information will be deleted that has to do with that app.

The Apple TV is a great addition to any existing TV setup. With an Apple TV you can play video, music and movies from your iPhone, iPad via AirPlay or browse the myriad of apps and games available from the Apple TV’s dedicated App Store – well, at least with the fourth-generation Apple TV anyway. Older variants (Apple TV 1, 2 and 3) are somewhat less impressive, only offering media playback and not much else.

But a jailbroken Apple TV is a whole different ball game. Once you have jailbreak software running on an Apple TV you can install new apps, services and systems on the Apple TV that make it far more interesting than what Apple offers by default.

Should I jailbreak an Apple TV?

The question of whether to jailbreak an iPhone is rather controversial (there are upsides and downsides). There are considerably fewer downsides to jailbreaking an old Apple TV, and lots of upsides.

Here is some of the neat software you can install on a jailbroken Apple TV:

Kodi (formally known as XMBC) is an entertainment hub that enables you to play most music, videos and podcasts. It also enables PVR functionality so you can watch, and record, live television.

aTV Flash (black) | FireCore: is user-friendly software for older Apple TVs that enables you to play niche file types (such as .mkv),  browse the internet and use unofficial apps such as Last.fm.

So it’s a great idea to jailbreak your old Apple TV. Especially if you have an Apple TV lying around that’s not being used.

Can I jailbreak my Apple TV?

Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to jailbreak an Apple TV – as long as you have the right model of Apple TV, anyway.

Apple has released five generations of Apple TV over the years it has been available. The Apple TV first-generation (the white and silver model) along with the Apple TV 2, Apple TV 3 and the Apple TV 4, which came with a redesigned OS and a number of new features, including Siri and an App Store, and was followed up by the Apple TV 4K.

The Apple TV 2, along with the Apple TV 4 and Apple TV 4K are pretty easy to jailbreak using the right software (more on this in a bit).

The first-gen Apple TV can be jailbroken using software called Rowmote, although the software is somewhat outdated and won’t provide a great experience compared to the more recent Apple TV.

• Apple may announce a new Apple TV with more storage and a faster processor later this year. Apple TV was last updated more than two years ago.
• tvOS will reportedly include a new Kids Mode feature that will allow parents to restrict access to certain programs and specific apps.

According to a new post from Hebrew-language site The Verifier, Apple is planning to add some new Apple TV features to tvOS in the near future. Like any Apple rumor, you’ll want to take this report with a grain of salt, though it’s worth noting that the site has previously provided accurate information about upcoming iOS features.

That disclaimer aside, the site claims that the next tvOS release will allow Apple TV owners to create a dedicate Kids Mode which will naturally come with restrictions as to what type of content can be selected and viewed. Parents will also be able to restrict access to specified programs. Additionally, entire apps can be blocked. So, for example, parents can prevent their kids from even opening up apps like YouTube or HBO in the first place, if they so choose.

The new Kids Mode, it’s worth noting, isn’t just about blocking content. It will reportedly feature a brand new and immersive design tailor-made for children. In effect, with Kids Mode activated, many young children will likely be wholly unaware that they only have access to a limited range of content.

Aside from Kids Mode, the report adds that Apple plans to add screen time management features to tvOS. Similar to Screen Time feature already available on the iPhone and iPad, the next iteration of tvOS will allow users to see how much time they’ve spent viewing content on apps like Netflix and how long they’ve spent playing games on Apple Arcade.

The report further corroborates previous rumors we’ve seen regarding new Apple TV hardware. It’s been a while since we’ve seen an Apple TV refresh, so hopefully this particular rumor pans out. Specifically, a next-gen Apple TV is said to feature either an A11 or A12 processor. As a point of contrast, the current Apple TV boasts an A10X fusion chip.

We can also expect a nice storage bump on the next-gen Apple TV. The 32GB storage option is reportedly going away and will be replaced with a 64GB storage option. There will also be a model with 128GB of storage for those who want to pay a little bit extra.

The report concludes by noting that Apple may hold a special event announcing new Apple TV hardware sometime in November or December of this year. Meanwhile, a tvOS announcement will likely be made at WWDC this year, assuming that it proceeds as planned. Recall that WWDC this year…
