Below, you’ll find a compendium of everything we know about the ambitious service, and we’ll keep it updated as we encounter credible rumors and get news from Apple itself.

How do I access Apple TV+?

You can sign up and watch Apple TV+ content through Apple’s TV app, which is available on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and the Mac—in addition to some supported third-party smart TVs, Roku, and Fire TV devices. You can also watch Apple TV+ on a browser at tv.apple.com. 

The experience of the TV app, though, varies from device to device. On a Roku TV or in a browser, you’ll only see Apple’s own content. As we’ll see, there’s not a lot there at the moment.

On an iOS device, a Mac, or the Apple TV, though, you’ll also see shows from other streaming services like HBO, Hulu or Amazon Prime thanks to the TV app’s Channels feature. It makes it easier to see all your favorite streaming content in one interface, and for Apple, it has the advantage of making its library look more robust than it actually is.

Can I watch Apple TV+ shows on non-Apple devices?

Fortunately, yes. In some cases, anyway. You can watch Apple TV+ through the TV app on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and the Mac, but you can also use the TV app on Amazon Fire TV and Roku along with some new sets from Samsung, Roku, LG, Vizio, and Sony. If you have a new set from Samsung, LG, Sony, or Vizio, you should also be able to use AirPlay 2 to broadcast content straight from your iPhone or iPad to the set.

How much does Apple TV+ cost?

Apple TV+ costs only $4.99 per month, and that includes Family Sharing. You can renew your subscription for one year for $49.99.

What’s more, customers who buy an Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, or Mac will get one year of Apple TV+ for free, although this is only for a “limited time.” (See the next section for more information.)

You also don’t have to pay anything for Apple TV+ if you’re on the student plan for Apple Music, which costs $4.99 per month. This will only be available for a limited time, though.

• Apple may announce a new Apple TV with more storage and a faster processor later this year. Apple TV was last updated more than two years ago.
• tvOS will reportedly include a new Kids Mode feature that will allow parents to restrict access to certain programs and specific apps.
• Apple will likely introduce tvOS at WWDC this year, an event which is now an online-only event due to the coronavirus.

According to a new post from Hebrew-language site The Verifier, Apple is planning to add some new Apple TV features to tvOS in the near future. Like any Apple rumor, you’ll want to take this report with a grain of salt, though it’s worth noting that the site has previously provided accurate information about upcoming iOS features.

That disclaimer aside, the site claims that the next tvOS release will allow Apple TV owners to create a dedicate Kids Mode which will naturally come with restrictions as to what type of content can be selected and viewed. Parents will also be able to restrict access to specified programs. Additionally, entire apps can be blocked. So, for example, parents can prevent their kids from even opening up apps like YouTube or HBO in the first place, if they so choose.

The new Kids Mode, it’s worth noting, isn’t just about blocking content. It will reportedly feature a brand new and immersive design tailor-made for children. In effect, with Kids Mode activated, many young children will likely be wholly unaware that they only have access to a limited range of content.

Aside from Kids Mode, the report adds that Apple plans to add screen time management features to tvOS. Similar to Screen Time feature already available on the iPhone and iPad, the next iteration of tvOS will allow users to see how much time they’ve spent viewing content on apps like Netflix and how long they’ve spent playing games on Apple Arcade.

The report further corroborates previous rumors we’ve seen regarding new Apple TV hardware. It’s been a while since we’ve seen an Apple TV refresh, so hopefully this particular rumor pans out. Specifically, a next-gen Apple TV is said to feature either an A11 or A12 processor. As a point of contrast, the current Apple TV boasts an A10X fusion chip.

We can also expect a nice storage bump on the next-gen Apple TV. The 32GB storage option is reportedly going away and will be replaced with a 64GB storage option. There will also be a model with 128GB of storage for those who want to pay a little bit extra.

The report concludes by noting that Apple may hold a special event announcing new Apple TV hardware sometime in November or December of this year. Meanwhile, a tvOS announcement will likely be made at WWDC this year, assuming that it proceeds as planned. Recall that WWDC this year…

“The future of health is on your wrist”, Apple tells us, as it wraps up its latest TV commercial ad for the Apple Watch Series 6. The ad in particular focuses on the ECG functionality and how it’s a game changer.

The 30 second ad was aired on NFL on Fox, and serves as a quick reminder of the convenience offered by the ECG monitoring function on the Series 6 wearable.

Being part of the “The future of health is on your wrist” promotion campaign for the Apple Watch, it is estimated that Apple spent $4.7 million to air the ad on TV screens, but is believed that it will soon find its way to the web, in particular; YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

The Apple Watch has had a history of cases where it has proven to be a life-saver. It has helped in detecting arrhythmia, often in cases where it was least expected, or in cases where the fall-detection feature helped save lives.

The ECG feature has been around since the Series 4 on the Apple Watch, but in the current lineup, only the Series 6 comes packing this feature, and cannot be found on the Apple Watch SE or Series 3. Series 6 also houses another exclusive feature; that is the Blood O2 monitor, which given the current COVID-19 pandemic, is a critical feature to have on your wrist.

All of the recent Apple TV discussion may have been centered around the introduction of the fourth-generation unit, but it appears there’s also some news for existing Apple TV 2G owners who prefer to use their device with a tint of liberation applied to it. FireCore, the team that has been consistently behind the provision of multiple jailbreak solutions for the Apple TV, is back with a new release that sees it’s popular Seas0nPass tool enter into a beta version with updated compatibility for Apple’s latest platforms.

FireCore has released a version of Seas0nPass that takes the jailbreak tool to version 0.9.7 and puts it into a beta state for those who wish to go down the route of testing out the updated tool. The latest version supports OS X 10.11 El Capitan, as well as the Apple TV 2G’s last firmware 6.2.1, which equates to iOS 7.1.2.

FireCore has issued the release with the following notes attached that are particularly relevant for anyone who plans on downloading this version of Seas0nPass to jailbreak their ATV2:

• This beta is available for Mac only.
• This version defaults to 5.3 (untethered) and you can install 6.2.1 (tethered) by right-clicking the Create IPSW button.
• The 6.2.1 jailbreak is tethered (for now) so please ensure you know what that means before using this.

The tool itself has been updated and uploaded to the team’s GitHub page. As mentioned in the accompanying release notes, it is limited to tethered boot only for the latest firmware, which means you will have to boot your Apple TV 2nd-gen into tethered mode every time your Apple TV reboots.

Gizmite Design is selling a breakout cable for the Apple TV 4K that makes it easy to access the internal USB port of the streaming device and boot it into DFU mode. The cable will also allow you to jailbreak the Apple TV 4K.

This internal USB port is used by Apple technicians for debugging and repair purposes. However, the same port can also be used to put the streaming box into DFU mode after which it can be jailbroken using checkra1n.

The catch with this breakout cable is that it requires a bit of soldering to be installed. You will first have open your Apple TV 4K box and then solder the breakout cable to the internal pins — a process that will require you to have access to a number of tools like a soldering iron, a 30AWG Kynar wire, and more.

If you are interested, Gizmite has the complete tutorial on installing the Breakout cable on its website and then jailbreaking the Apple TV 4K. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart and requires one to have enough know-how on how to use soldering tools.

The breakout cable is available for a promotional price of $15 which increases to $25 from next week. Shipping the cable to the United States or other parts of the world will cost you another $10-$20.
