The new Apple TV looks like the old one, but it’s a complete overhaul of the little black puck. It now comes with a full-blown App Store, a touch-sensitive remote and voice controls via Siri.
You can preorder it now, and it’ll ship Friday.
We got our hands on a developer model and have been playing around with it. We like it a lot. Setup is fun, the interface looks stunning, and the touch remote works beautifully. If the Music app is any indication, apps on this thing are going to be great. There’s just one little thing wrong. And it’s not little, actually. It’s big.
Here’s the good, the bad and the ugly about the 4th-generation Apple TV.

Apple gave some developers early access to the new Apple TV so they could get their software ready for the new tvOS App Store. Unfortunately, there’s no App Store yet, but we gave the built-in apps a good tire-kicking.
We watched movies and TV shows from the online iTunes store, loaded Photos from our photo stream and explored the fantastic Music app, which is sweeeeeet. We watched, mesmerized, as the fantastic aerial screensavers played time after time. And we did a lot of talking to Siri, which you’ll hear about in a bit.
All in all, we got a pretty good picture of how the new Apple TV works.
Setup of the new Apple TV is so easy, you barely need the remote. It’ll pull settings right off your iPhone.

The new Apple TV brings a vastly improved setup procedure. Instead of jumping through screen after screen, laboriously entering all your passwords, the new device can be paired with an iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth. It then copies your Wi-Fi and Apple ID settings. Admittedly, it didn’t work the first time we did it, but it did the second time, and I was just delighted!
The new hardware is fast and fluid. The surprisingly small motherboard holds a 64-bit, dual-core A8 processor, a super-speedy little monster that debuted in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (now a generation behind the new 6s).
The chip is a screamer, and runs hot, so the new box is about half as tall again as the old one (iFixit’s teardown shows the increased size accommodates a giant heat sink). The small set-top box boasts 2 GB of RAM, also a step up from the previous version.

Apple TV is a great set-top box, but it’s been around for a while without any kind of hardware update. It looks like that’s going to change any day now. It’s about to be upgraded with a much more powerful processor at its heart.
This is according to Jon Prosser, maker of Front Page Tech and, when it comes to leaks, astonishingly accurate in his Apple revelations of late. So a tweet from Prosser bears some examination.
Here’s what he says is happening.
Coming Any Day Now
Prosser says the new machine is ready to ship. More than any other company, Apple has been determined not to let COVID-19 interrupt its release schedule. In the last few weeks we’ve seen a new iPad Pro (read my review here), new iPad Pro Magic Keyboard (review here), MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
Oh, yes, and the small matter of the iPhone SE (review here).

So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that more Apple product is coming our way. The Apple TV box was last updated in September 2017 when the current 4K box was revealed. Since then, support for Dolby Atmos has been added, but no hardware changes have been made.
Expect this to be announced in the coming week or two, with shipment straight after, if Prosser is correct.

It seems the design will be unchanged from before. Well, it’s a cool look and, frankly, it’ll be hidden under or behind your TV most of the time, so maybe it doesn’t need a refresh to the look.
Prosser is clear about how the design makes the product look:

Processor
Currently, the Apple TV box is powered with an A10X Fusion processor, a chip that was first seen in the10.5in iPad Pro that was released in June 2017. At the time, it was seen as a pretty powerful engine for a box that was mostly about streaming and only secondarily about apps and games.
But, such is the advance of apps and games, a newer processor is needed, it seems. It’s going to be the A12X Bionic, apparently.
Let’s take a moment to think about that. This is an incredibly fast processor. In fact, the super-fast, super-powerful 2020 iPad Pro is powered by the A12Z Bionic which is only a little more advanced (and is the most powerful processor Apple has ever made).
So, isn’t this overkill?
Prosser thinks, and I agree, that it’s all down to the games. As smartphone games have become more sophisticated and demanding, the need for more potent processors has become urgent.

Once a year Apple rolls out a major update to tvOS, the operating system software that runs on the 2015 and later Apple TV models. These (free) full-version updates introduce new features, as well as tweaking the interface and fixing bugs. The latest of these is tvOS 14, and it launches today!
In between the yearly updates, smaller point updates roll out, such as (in the near future) tvOS 14.1. These tend to have fewer eye-catching features but they are important too, because they often include security fixes. It’s a good idea to keep your Apple TV up to date with the latest tvOS updates.
In this article we explain how to update tvOS on your Apple TV – which, as of today, means installing tvOS 14. (If you’d like to try out forthcoming versions of the software before they launch, you need to install a tvOS beta.) We also address any issues you might encounter with the update process.
Note that tvOS is only available on Apple TV 4K (2017) and Apple TV 4th generation (2015). Older Apple TVs have their own software, called simply Apple TV Software, but this isn’t updated very often. However, if your device is experiencing performance issues it’s worth checking that you’re running the most up-to-date software, something we explain below.
If you have a newer Apple TV – one launched since 2015 – this is how to update its software.
The Apple TV may restart during the process, and you’ll be presented with a progress bar indicating the status of the update.
Once the Apple TV update has been completed, the Apple TV will restart running the most up-to-date software.
To turn on automatic updates go to Settings > System > Software Updates and turn on Automatically Update.
If your Apple TV is one of the older models that pre-dates the App Store interface, this is how to update it.
To turn on automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Update Software and turn on Update Automatically.
When Apple launched the reinvented Apple TV in 2015 it created tvOS, the iOS like software interface for it. tvOS started at version 9, so there won’t be any older versions than that.

If the Apple TV 2021 launches this year, it will benefit from the new updates in tvOS 14, announced at WWDC 2020. This tvOS update adds multi-user support for Apple Arcade games, improved integration with Apple HomeKit-compatible accessories and improved picture-in-picture mode (including AirPlay videos).
Plus, Apple TV Plus rolled out an exciting trailer for the sci-fi series Foundation, based on Isaac Asimov’s iconic book series. The tvOS 14 update may not be the only update to the Apple TV 2021. Rumors are floating around about an Apple TV 4K with Apple’s speedy A12X Bionic chip (probably not the final name).
One Apple insider has said the Apple TV 2020 is “ready to ship.” It would be first new Apple TV hardware since 2017’s Apple TV 4K, which is still one of the best streaming devices in the market.
Here’s everything else we know about the Apple TV 2021.
The last Apple TV was released in Sept. 2017, but that doesn’t mean Apple will stick to that timetable. In mid-March, the company rolled out the iPad Pro 2020 and the MacBook Air 2020 in press releases at 8am Eastern. Then it dropped the iPhone SE 2020 and MacBook Pro 2020 (13-inch) in April and May with very short notice.
The company could do the same with the Apple TV 2020, considering Apple leaker Jon Prosser says it’s “ready to ship.”
The current Apple TV 4K starts at $179, which is a lot more money than most competing streaming devices. For example, the Roku Ultra, which supports 4K HDR content and comes with a voice remote, costs $99. And the Amazon Fire TV Cube, which has Alexa built in and can control your cable box, costs $119. Hopefully Apple lowers its pricing for the Apple TV 2020.
It appears the Apple TV 2020, in terms of what’s changing, may be more about video games than streaming. The first Apple TV 2020 rumor we saw pointed to an overdue speed boost update, that would allow for a new processor. Signs suggests it could be either Apple’s A12 or A13 Bionic chip, which are a part of the iPhone generations from 2019 and 2018. To put that in perspective, the most recent Apple TV uses A10 Fusion chip technology, which has been circulating since its 2016 debut in the iPhone 7.
Since the current processors are plenty fast for binge-watching Apple TV Plus shows, Netfix marathons and other live TV apps, this upgrade is probably meant to give the box more gaming prowess, as the Apple TV is one of the Apple Arcade platforms.
The latest rumor, which 9to5Mac pulled from prominent YouTubers, is that the Apple TV 2020 will come in 64GB and 128GB capacities, doubling the Apple TV 4K’s 32GB and 64GB drives. Again, this is most likely for games, allowing for users to keep a larger library of titles on their Apple TV, and allow for even more complex games.

A bit of (potentially) good news for Apple TV fans: alongside an expanded and improved Apple TV+ streaming experience, Apple is also rumoured to be working on a new Apple TV 6th generation streaming box – an update on the Apple TV 4K.
Avid readers will know that references to new Apple TV hardware were found in Apple’s tvOS 13.4 beta code and now, the YouTube channel iUpdate and The Verifier are reporting on a few details about the so-called ‘Apple TV 6’ set-top box, as well as upcoming tvOS updates.
According to the YouTube clip, Apple will level up the storage options for the Apple TV from 32GB and 64GB options (the current lineup), to 64GB and 128GB. The big draw here, of course, is extra space for all those Apple Arcade titles.
It’ll likely include Apple’s newer A12 chip too, a significant improvement on the current A10 fusion processor and an inclusion that will be of particular interest to gamers.
In terms of the Apple TV hardware’s aesthetic, no major redesign of the unit is planned, although the remote will apparently receive an overhaul – a sensible move (Google is also improving the remote for its Chromecast Ultra Android streamer).
The Cupertino giant is also reportedly planning a new ‘Kids Mode’ for Apple TV+ – not unique to the Apple TV 6 box, but a new feature for tvOS itself. This means Apple TV owners could set up a separate account for their kids and control the applications they can access like the mock-up from iUpdate (main picture).
The report also states that Screen Time is coming to tvOS (so you’ll be able to remark at just how long you’ve been glued to your screen) and that Apple is working on “a completely revamped overall interface on the Apple TV”.
In terms of availability, we might expect the new Apple TV hardware sometime before the end of the year but, owing to these uncertain times, we’d take it as a soft deadline rather than set in stone.
