The September Apple event has been and gone, aside from a trio of new iPhones – the XS, XS Max and Xr – and a new Apple Watch Series 4 – possibly including a new Macbook Air, there was scant mention of other new hardware.

There were no new iPads launched, although there’s still time for that to change later in the year, and no new Apple TV. That’s alright, though. The Apple TV isn’t a product that often gets an annual upgrade and the latest version – the 4K-enabled fifth-generation Apple TV – was released relatively recently, at 2017’s September launch event. 

Apple did, however, announce a release date for tvOS 12, the latest version of the Apple TV’s operating system and this will bring with it a couple of major new features: Dolby Atmos and single sign-on. The former is fairly self-explanatory, adding a feature that should bring greater audio expansiveness and “height” to setups with Atmos-enabled hardware.

The second is aimed at making initial setup even easier than it is already, allowing the Apple TV to sign itself in automatically to all your streaming services as soon as it’s recognised you’ve logged on to your home Wi-Fi network. This will require support from your ISP to work, however, so don’t expect it to work straight away.

Alas, anyone waiting for next-generation hardware will, however, most probably have to wait for another year. Here’s when it’s likely to be available and what it might look like:

Apple TV 6 release date: When can we buy it?

Aside from iPhones, which are as regular as clockwork, the release dates of many other Apple products are harder to predict. The Apple TV is similarly unpredictable: previous models were released in January 2007, September 2010, January 2013, October 2015 and September 2017.

We can make an educated guess though. Going by the previous two editions, the betting money would be on the next Apple TV being released in September 2019. That fits with the recent timeline – and by then Apple may have a worthy selection of upgrades and features to cram into a new model.

Apple TV 6 price: How much will it cost?

Again, we’ll have to look to the past for some ideas on this one. But even then, without a confirmed spec list, it’s a bit tougher to home in on a specific price. We can certainly predict a price range though.

The latest Apple TV available to buy right now is the fifth-gen version, which costs £179 for the 32GB version and £199 for the 64GB box. Barring some great leap forward in set-top box tech, it’s likely that the Apple TV 6 will remain in the same price range, even if UK-US exchange rates conspire to push the price a little higher than last year’s model.

A new rumor says Apple is planning a big overhaul for tvOS this year, paving the way for an updated Apple TV unit with a completely new design.

Apple TV – the device, not the TV+ streaming service – has a very slow update cycle in comparison to Apple’s other products. We’ve not seen a big update to the box in years, and even the last two annual software updates were minor. It’s in dire need of a refresh.

Sources point to tvOS 15 making big changes to both the design and capabilities of the set-top box. Personally, we’d like to see improvements to the mess that is the native TV app. The idea of collating shows from every network in one place sounds good on paper, but Apple’s implementation is lacking.

However, the exact layout changes aren’t specified here. Instead, the rumors suggest we’ll see more robust parental controls, including a Screen Time feature and a kids mode.

The 6th-gen Apple TV, expected later this year, is said to considerably beef up the storage capabilities while upgrading the processor to the powerful A12 Bionic chip found in the iPhone XS and XR range.

This, along with a rumor that Apple is developing its own game controllers, could make the next Apple TV a genuine gaming console in its own right – something we also saw rumored last year. Perhaps not a PlayStation killer, but certainly a viable way to enjoy Apple Arcade on the big screen.

It will be interesting to see how Apple pitches its next TV box. The current generation is too expensive to compete with Roku or Amazon’s budget streaming sticks, but not capable enough to compete with consoles from Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. It’s in a middle ground that only really appeals to Apple die-hards or those for whom money isn’t a concern.

Perhaps the best option is for Apple to split the product in two – a bare-bones streaming stick called Apple TV Mini and a powerful machine capable of running beefy apps called Apple TV Max. But what do we know?

A previous rumor also talked about one model featuring an A14X Bionic sent out to developers, most likely for testing out taxing gaming applications on it. This brings us to Apple Arcade+.

While the report doesn’t mention what Apple will offer with this service, high-graphic fidelity gaming titles rivaling that of the ‘Breath of the Wild’ might release with it shortly. Some of these games might even require an A13 Bionic as the minimum required specifications to run properly, so assuming these rumors are true, Apple is diving into the gaming market as we speak. Alongside the Apple TV 6, the company is also working on a dedicated game controller.

Unfortunately, it’s not confirmed if this accessory will be provided with the 2021 Apple TV purchase or if it will be sold separately. It looks like we’ll find out during its rumored release.

Apple’s HomePod is more than an intelligent speaker, it’s also a HomeKit hub, just like Apple TV. That means you can use your HomePod as the bridge when you control your HomeKit smart home gear when you aren’t at home.

Your HomePod automatically becomes a HomeKit hub if you’ve already added devices like smart lights and smart thermostats to your smart home setup, no need for you to do anything else. In fact, the setup process is completely transparent; the initial setup adds your HomePod to your HomeKit device list without requiring any action on your part.

Apple has been talking about its smart home platform for some time now, although it hasn’t gained traction in the same way that some others have. That means there are still plenty of people using Apple products who don’t know what HomeKit is, or how they would use it.

HomeKit

Apple introduced HomeKit in 2014 with iOS 8 as a platform to unify smart home device control. The idea is that you can control your lights, thermostat, window shades, garage door, locks, and more from a single interface—and all those devices can work together.

Device makers need to build HomeKit support into their products, which until recently has been a fairly arduous task. Apple relaxed the licensing requirements for hobbyists and tinkerers with iOS 11, and in iOS 11.3 is letting device makers enable HomeKit support through software so they don’t have to use custom chips any more. That should help HomeKit’s growth.

HomeKit also includes Siri support so you can control your smart home devices with your voice. That voice control, at least for now, is limited to iPhone, iPad, and 5th or 6th generation iPod touch models. HomeKit control isn’t available on the Mac even though Siri is part of macOS.

HomeKit Hub

HomeKit and Siri are great when you’re at home, but what about when you leave for work and forget to turn off the lights? HomeKit control from your iOS device is limited to when everything is on the same network. To control your smart home gear remotely, you need a HomeKit hub.

Apple includes HomeKit hub support in the fourth generation and newer Apple TV, and limited support in iPads running iOS 10 or newer. You can control an unlimited number of devices with an Apple TV as your hub, but only three with an iPad. The iPad also needs to be plugged into a power source while it serves as a hub.

Apple added another option to its HomeKit hub options with the introduction of the HomePod. That gives you two choices for streaming entertainment devices that let you remotely control your smart home tech.
