The September Apple event has been and gone, aside from a trio of new iPhones – the XS, XS Max and Xr – and a new Apple Watch Series 4 – possibly including a new Macbook Air, there was scant mention of other new hardware.

There were no new iPads launched, although there’s still time for that to change later in the year, and no new Apple TV. That’s alright, though. The Apple TV isn’t a product that often gets an annual upgrade and the latest version – the 4K-enabled fifth-generation Apple TV – was released relatively recently, at 2017’s September launch event. 

Apple did, however, announce a release date for tvOS 12, the latest version of the Apple TV’s operating system and this will bring with it a couple of major new features: Dolby Atmos and single sign-on. The former is fairly self-explanatory, adding a feature that should bring greater audio expansiveness and “height” to setups with Atmos-enabled hardware.

The second is aimed at making initial setup even easier than it is already, allowing the Apple TV to sign itself in automatically to all your streaming services as soon as it’s recognised you’ve logged on to your home Wi-Fi network. This will require support from your ISP to work, however, so don’t expect it to work straight away.

Alas, anyone waiting for next-generation hardware will, however, most probably have to wait for another year. Here’s when it’s likely to be available and what it might look like:

Apple TV 6 release date: When can we buy it?

Aside from iPhones, which are as regular as clockwork, the release dates of many other Apple products are harder to predict. The Apple TV is similarly unpredictable: previous models were released in January 2007, September 2010, January 2013, October 2015 and September 2017.

We can make an educated guess though. Going by the previous two editions, the betting money would be on the next Apple TV being released in September 2019. That fits with the recent timeline – and by then Apple may have a worthy selection of upgrades and features to cram into a new model.

Apple TV 6 price: How much will it cost?

Again, we’ll have to look to the past for some ideas on this one. But even then, without a confirmed spec list, it’s a bit tougher to home in on a specific price. We can certainly predict a price range though.

The latest Apple TV available to buy right now is the fifth-gen version, which costs £179 for the 32GB version and £199 for the 64GB box. Barring some great leap forward in set-top box tech, it’s likely that the Apple TV 6 will remain in the same price range, even if UK-US exchange rates conspire to push the price a little higher than last year’s model.

1. Obsolete nitoTV 

This is by far the main reason why LiberTV tvOS jailbreak is useless. As you know, jailbreaking itself doesn’t amount to anything if there are no tweaks or packages you can install on your set-top box.

nitoTV, the Cydia alternative for Apple TV, is still not functional on tvOS 10 firmware months after LiberTV’s release.

Kevin Bradley, the developer of nitoTV, confirmed that he was working on a port for iOS 10. This announcement was made back in early May, almost 6 months earlier.

He hasn’t been very active in the jailbreak scene for quite a few months now. Moreover, his Twitter account has now gone private as well. The reason being those stupid “wen eta jailbreak” trolls.

I guess it’s now safe to assume there won’t be any future updates for nitoTV.

2. Sideloading

Just like sideloading is becoming increasingly popular with iPhone users, Apple TV users are also making the switch.

Sideloading already does what the majority of users jailbreak for – installing Kodi.

You can easily install Kodi on your set-top box using Cydia Impactor without running a jailbreak. Furthermore, you can purchase a developer account from Apple, which will cover all your devices for a year.

3. Better tvOS updates

Apple’s latest offering for Apple Tv users, tvOS 11 brings a lot of new features. It adds Bluetooth keyboard support and AirPods, automatic dark mode, home screen synchronization and much more.

Ironically, the benefits of installing the new tvOS update actually outweigh the advantages that a jailbreak brings.

4. Inactive jailbreak community

The iPhone jailbreak scene is really active and has a great unofficial developer community. However, the same can’t be said for Apple’s set-top box.

Other than them, there’s not a single developer that wants to work on Apple’s set-top box.

5. Underutilized device

Apple TV is a device with tons of potential, especially from a jailbreak perspective.

AT&T’s HBO Max, which got off to a slow start, drew the largest share of new streaming subscribers in the fourth quarter, according to Kantar’s Entertainment on Demand Service.

In April 2020, WarnerMedia has inked a deal with Apple to distribute HBO Max, its streaming service that launched on May 27, 2020, via the Apple TV app on Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV 4K, and Apple TV HD.

Kantar estimates that [in total] the number of SVOD subscriptions reached 233 million by the end of December, with the average home having 3.5 streaming video subscriptions, up from 3.1 at the start of 2020.

During the fourth quarter, HBO Max attracted 19.2% of new subscribers, up from 13.4% in the third quarter. Kantar said HBO Max got a boost from its parent company’s decision to release the full slate of Warner Brothers films simultaneously in movie theaters and on HBO Max.

In the fourth quarter, Amazon Prime Video attracted 18.2% of new subscribers, up from 17.75% in Q3; Hulu got 13.7%, up from 13.5%; Disney Plus drew 13%, up from 12.7; Netflix got 7.4%, down from 9.8% and Apple TV Plus had a 5.9% share, down from 6.7%.

For the full year, Disney Plus attracted 18.3% of new SVOD subscribers, followed by Prime Video with 17%, Hulu with 13.2%, HBO Max with 12%, Netflix with 12.5% and Apple TV Plus with 6.2%.

In terms of individual shows, Season 2 of Disney Plus’ The Mandalorian was the top-rated title during the fourth quarter. It was followed by The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit.

MacDailyNews Take: In a statement, Dominic Sunnebo, senior VP at Kantar, Worldpanel Division, said that 41% of new HBO Max subscribers in Q4 cited specific content as their key motivator for signing up, an increase from 32% the prior quarter. Roughly 20% of those new subscribers craving content cited Wonder Women 1984 as a factor in their choice.

“Whilst Netflix subscribers remain highly engaged, the content slate and current proposition does not appear strong enough to drive continued subscriber growth in the presence of multiple highly competitive service launches,” Sunnebo said. “We are also seeing challenges coming from two other sources; the price rise in Q4 has driven an increase in planned cancellation, with this rise cited as the key reason and the continued blowback from the Cuties release. Whilst overall retention remains solid, in Q4 almost 1 in 10 cancellations was directly as a result from fallout from the Cuties release, or broader disagreement with Netflix’s political leanings. These reasons impact both potential acquisition opportunities as well as retention of existing subscribers.”

The Apple TV is the company’s foray into the streaming set-top box market. Originally released in January 2007, the set-top box has been used as a way for iTunes customers to play movies and TV shows on their television, and to stream content from their iOS device to the larger screen, as well as from several third-party streaming services.

As part of the launch, Apple updated the iTunes Store to sell and rent out 4K versions of movies and TV shows, though these will be displayed at 1080p on earlier models. Apple also expanded the reach of the TV app, increasing the list of countries from just the United States to a total of eight. 

At the same time as introducing the 4K model, Apple also reduced the Apple TV HD range to just one capacity, removing the 64GB option and leaving only the 32GB variant on sale alongside the new arrival.

The fourth-generation model is much taller than its forebears, measuring 3.9 inches square and 1.4 inches tall, and weighing in at 15 ounces. On the front of the device is an IR receiver, while on the back of the box are four ports, with a power connection to the built-in power supply accompanied by a 100Mbps Ethernet connection, an HDMI 1.4 port, and a USB-C port for diagnostic purposes.

Apple TV is a great set-top box, but it’s been around for a while without any kind of hardware update. It looks like that’s going to change any day now. It’s about to be upgraded with a much more powerful processor at its heart.

This is according to Jon Prosser, maker of Front Page Tech and, when it comes to leaks, astonishingly accurate in his Apple revelations of late. So a tweet from Prosser bears some examination.

Coming Any Day Now

Prosser says the new machine is ready to ship. More than any other company, Apple has been determined not to let COVID-19 interrupt its release schedule. In the last few weeks we’ve seen a new iPad Pro (read my review here), new iPad Pro Magic Keyboard (review here), MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

Oh, yes, and the small matter of the iPhone SE (review here).

So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that more Apple product is coming our way. The Apple TV box was last updated in September 2017 when the current 4K box was revealed. Since then, support for Dolby Atmos has been added, but no hardware changes have been made.

Expect this to be announced in the coming week or two, with shipment straight after, if Prosser is correct.

It seems the design will be unchanged from before. Well, it’s a cool look and, frankly, it’ll be hidden under or behind your TV most of the time, so maybe it doesn’t need a refresh to the look.

Prosser is clear about how the design makes the product look:

Processor

Currently, the Apple TV box is powered with an A10X Fusion processor, a chip that was first seen in the10.5in iPad Pro that was released in June 2017. At the time, it was seen as a pretty powerful engine for a box that was mostly about streaming and only secondarily about apps and games.

But, such is the advance of apps and games, a newer processor is needed, it seems. It’s going to be the A12X Bionic, apparently.

Let’s take a moment to think about that. This is an incredibly fast processor. In fact, the super-fast, super-powerful 2020 iPad Pro is powered by the A12Z Bionic which is only a little more advanced (and is the most powerful processor Apple has ever made).

So, isn’t this overkill?

Prosser thinks, and I agree, that it’s all down to the games. As smartphone games have become more sophisticated and demanding, the need for more potent processors has become urgent.

Apple is building in future-proofing with this move.

Oh, and by the way, if Apple didn’t upgrade the chip, people would be complaining.

The tipster on Twitter, Jioriku is back with another statement concerning the Apple TV 6. According to him, the launch will happen in September, which to remind you, is also the month when Apple is expected to unveil its newest iPhone 12 lineup. Apart from the A12X Bionic upgrade that will apparently run faster than the silicon in the 2018 iPad Pro thanks to a better thermal solution, the 2020 Apple TV is also said to arrive in multiple storage configurations.

Jioriku hasn’t specified how many storage variants there are, but a previous report by Jon Prosser states that Apple TV 6 will arrive in the 64GB and 128GB configurations. While Jioriku hasn’t mentioned the following in his latest tweet, there’s a possibility Apple also introduces a specialized gaming controller for the Apple TV. This move could encourage people to try out the latest and future Apple Arcade titles and we believe that the A12X Bionic will be rocking enough horsepower to handle the most visually demanding games as well.

It doesn’t look like Apple will offer the new hardware in a different color option, and for lots of customers, this isn’t a deal-breaker at all. The footprint of the upcoming 2020 Apple TV isn’t expected to be increased despite the rumored cooling solution, so it can easily be obscured if customers are having too much trouble fathoming its black finish.

Apple almost launched the Apple TV 6 back at the WWDC 2020 event, according to latest reports. However, it was scrapped in the last few hours. The report also adds that the company is prepping for a bigger event in September, quoting a tipster. And it will most likely include the new streaming box with upgraded internals.

The latest leak comes from a Twitter user Jioriku who says that Apple TV 2020 should launch in September. It will boast an A12X Bionic chipset inside. The event will likely have the iPhone 12 series to be the stars of the show.

As for the design, the new Apple TV isn’t expected to bring in a big change in design and colours. The overall footprint of a three-year-old Apple TV 5 is expected to be retained though.

Being introduced in 2018, the A12X packs quite the punch. Clocked at 2.49GHz, the silicon is built on a 7nm FinFET process by Taiwan’s TSMC.

Better Thermals

This points to improved thermals with a new cooling solution. This could be a big bump compared to previous model with the A10X Fusion. 

Further, Jioriku says the new Apple TV will come with new storage configurations. Though he hasn’t mentioned the specifics of it, an earlier tip by Jon Prosser says the streaming box will come with 4K support and have 64/128GB configurations.

This bigger storage, when paired with an alleged gaming Controller that Apple is rumoured to be developing, will open a new door for the Apple arcade that got extended to the TV service almost a year back.

Why did Apple scrap it?

Apple was earlier prepared to unveil the new Apple TV on June 22nd. According to Jioriku, the decision was held back on the verge of the event as Apple somehow realised the September event will most likely be a similar virtual event. 

Considering the current situation, holding a physical event is out of the equation now and this could have made Apple think of postponing the Apple TV launch to September to make it even bigger, says the tipster.

The keynote in September is likely to be focused more on the Hardware perspective where Apple could also talk more about the ARM-powered Macbooks. He further says the Macbooks and iMacs are expected to come in both Intel and Apple’s own ARM chips however, the current focus will be on Macbooks.

The current Apple TV 4K starts at $179, which is a lot more money than most competing streaming devices. For example, the Roku Ultra, which supports 4K HDR content and comes with a voice remote, costs $99. And the Amazon Fire TV Cube, which has Alexa built in and can control your cable box, costs $119. Hopefully Apple lowers its pricing for the Apple TV 2020.

It appears the Apple TV 2020, in terms of what’s changing, may be more about video games than streaming. The first Apple TV 2020 rumor we saw pointed to an overdue speed boost update, that would allow for a new processor. Signs suggests it could be either Apple’s A12 or A13 Bionic chip, which are a part of the iPhone generations from 2019 and 2018. To put that in perspective, the most recent Apple TV uses A10 Fusion chip technology, which has been circulating since its 2016 debut in the iPhone 7.

Since the current processors are plenty fast for binge-watching Apple TV Plus shows, Netfix marathons and other live TV apps, this upgrade is probably meant to give the box more gaming prowess, as the Apple TV is one of the Apple Arcade platforms.

Before you decide to download unc0ver tvOS tool to perform an Apple TV jailbreak, note that you need to use Xcode and iOS App Signer on macOS to sign the unc0ver IPA file and install it on your Apple TV. The process is not simple but we will break it down into simple steps for you:

1. Download and install Xcode.
2. Open Xcode and and create a tvOS Single View App in projects.
3. Use an Apple Developer account, free or paid, to configure the project and create a provisioning profile and signing certificate.
4. Launch iOS App Signer and open the latest unc0ver TV IPA file.
5. In iOS App Signer, select your Apple account for signing certificate, and provisioning profile. Click start and your app will be signed.
6. Launch Xcode and open Window > Devices and Simulators.
7. Connect your Apple TV and click the ‘+’ button to install the signed unc0ver IPA file.
8. Open unc0ver app from your Apple TV home screen and tap jailbreak.

That’s it. tvOS might respring a few times for the Apple TV jailbreak process to complete.
