The 2019 Major League Baseball season is almost here and Spring Training has now underway. The good news is for the first time cord cutters have unprecedented access to MLB games. So here is our cord cutting guide to watching MLB games on Roku, Fire TV, and the Apple TV.

MLB Network

Currently only DIRECTV NOW, YouTube TV, and PlayStation Vue offer the MLB Network live. Great for anyone who wants to stay on top of the latest MLB news.

Regional Sports Network

If you want access to your local sports networks such as Fox Sports or Comcast SportsNet (CSN) and others we have good news for you. Hulu, fuboTV, Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, YouTube TV, and DIRECTV NOW all offer local sports channels—just not all of them. Sadly you will have to do a bit of research to see what local sports network each has in your area. They all seem to have Fox Sports and the rest have a smattering of different regional sports networks. Make sure to visit their sites to find out what they have where you live.

They all offer a free trial so make sure to test them out first.

(Note: Currently fuboTV is the only service with AT&T SportsNet but currently only offers the AT&T SportsNet Southwest. Hopefully, more will be added soon.)

MLB.tv

If you live out of the market for your favorite teams (don’t live close to them) you should check out MLB.TV.

MLB.TV will stream to you every out-of-market game. You can pick to follow just one team or sign up for full access depending on what you are willing to pay. MLB.TV is available on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Chromcast.

Apple has a gift for all of us stuck at home under lockdown – it’s made a number of shows on its Apple TV+ streaming service free to watch. It already made season premieres free to watch, but now it’s unlocked entire series and feature-length movies for no fee at all.

Interested? Here’s how to watch without paying a thing.

What can you watch for free on Apple TV+?

Apple has made nine series and movies completely free to watch. These are:

• The Elephant Queen – a documentary about a family of elephants as they travel across the African savannah. Narrated by Chiwetel Ejiofor
• Little America – comedy drama focusing on immigrants who have settled in America
• Servant – psychological thriller about a couple who experience a tragic event, only for a mysterious force to enter their home
• For all Mankind – space drama from Star Trek‘s Ronald D. Moore
• Dickinson – comedy starring Hailee Steinfeld about the early life of writer Emily Dickinson
• Helpsters – kids’ puppet show from the creators of Sesame Street
• Ghostwriter – four kids are helped by a ghost on their mission to release fictional characters from the books they feature in
• Snoopy in Space – animation in which the iconic pup becomes an astronaut
• Oprah’s talks on the coronavirus pandemic

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Apple’s flagship shows See and The Morning Show aren’t included. It still wants you to subscribe to its £4.99/$4.99-per-month service, natch! You can, however, watch those for free by signing up to the Apple TV+ seven-day free trial.

How to watch Apple TV+ shows for free

To watch, all you’ll need is the Apple TV app. This comes pre-installed on supported devices made by Apple (and some Samsung smart TVs) or can be downloaded for other devices like Roku and Amazon streaming sticks.

Then just follow these steps.

• Open the TV app on your supported device
• Sign in with your Apple ID
• Select a show and start watching

Apple is rumored to be working on a game controller and it’s about time. A gamepad is one of the missing pieces from the Apple gaming experience.

Apple is rumored to be working on a first-party video game controller that’s likely to be compatible with all of its major hardware products, such as Apple TV, the iPad, and the iPhone. While a new gamepad from Apple is not something that’s essential, it is needed, and can’t come soon enough.

Apple is synonymous with the iPhone, but the company is hoping to change that and broaden its appeal. This is not just simply a matter of wanting to move beyond the iPhone, but more a case of the company understanding the real growth opportunities right now are outside the saturated smartphone market. As a result, Apple has expanded its hardware lineup to include audio and TV in recent years, as well as the services it offers, including into gaming with Apple Arcade.

Tipster, @L0vetodream recently stated that Apple is working on a new game controller and suggested that it will arrive either later this year or next year. The tipster does have a reasonable track record on these things, leading to the news becoming highly reported on within the media this week. No firm details were provided on what the controller will look like, if it will come with any notable features, or how much it might cost. Although it is likely it will be cross-platform compatible, meaning it will work with Apple’s phones, tablets, and Apple TV.

An Apple gamepad is needed, although it is not essential. For example, Apple already should have a game controller on the market, considering it has all of the rest of the setup in place. It not only provides the hardware with Apple TV, but also the ability to stream games online through Apple Arcade. This in itself makes the lack of an existing Apple games controller all the more perplexing. Regardless of whether it is a good controller or not, there will be many consumers who would prefer to have an official Apple product to marry with the rest of their setup. In fact, Apple TV is one of the more expensive set-top boxes for the living room and the remote that comes with it, is anything but useful. If the same device had been packaged with a controller, then it might suddenly be a much better and worthwhile purchase. With the hardware and the software already in place, an Apple gamepad shouldn’t be currently in development, it should already be here.

Apple could be taking its gaming service in a new direction.

Apple might be changing up its playbook around Apple Arcade, the company’s $4.99 a month gaming subscription service. The tech company is ending contracts for some games that are still in development, as it looks for titles that’ll better retain subscribers, according to a Tuesday report from Bloomberg. 

An Apple Arcade creative producer told some developers that their upcoming games lacked the level of “engagement” sought by Apple, according to unnamed sources in Bloomberg’s report. The sources said Apple is working to make sure players stay after the free trial, and wants games that keep users interested.  

CNET reached out to Apple Arcade representatives, and we’ll update when we hear back. 

It’s been almost a year since Apple tossed its hat into the gaming subscription arena with the release of Apple Arcade. To date, the service has over 120 new and exclusive games to play across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, iPod Touch and Apple TV. Some of the breakout games on the service include The Enchanted World, Where Cards Fall and Shinsekai: Into the Depths.

Jailbreak, kelime anlamı olarak “hapisten kaçış, firar” anlamına geliyor. iPhone, iPod Touch ve iPad gibi cihazlarda, cihazın belirli kısıtlar ve güvenlik sınırlarının dışında kullanılabilmesine imkan tanıyan Jailbreak için sıklıkla “kırmak” kelimesi de kullanılıyor. Her ne kadar “unlock” işlemi ile karıştırılsa da “jailbreak” ve “kırmak” kelimeleri artık neredeyse bütünleşmiş durumda diyebiliriz.

Apple TV’miz için düşünüldüğünde ise, jailbreak işlemi, Apple TV içerisine yüklenen farklı uygulamalarla yeteneklerinin arttırılması anlamına geliyor diyebiliriz.

Genellikle iPhone, iPod Touch ve iPad gibi cihazların yeteneklerinin arttırılması amacıyla jailbreak yapılıyor. Bunları kabaca özetlemek gerekirse;

• ücretli uygulamaların ücretsizce (yasal olmayan yollarla) yüklenmesi,
• App Store dışından da farklı uygulamaların (ücretli ve ücretsiz) yüklenebilmesi,
• cihazların unlock (SIM kilididin kırılması) edilebilmeleri
• ve daha pek çok farklı amaç için…

Apple TV’ye gelince, henüz Apple TV’ye özel bir App Store ve SIM kilidi gibi kısıtlamalar olmadığı için Apple TV’nin hala tamamen Apple kontrolünde çalıştığını söyleyebiliriz. Apple, cihazın içerisine hangi özellikleri eklerse o kullanılıyor, eklenmeyen özellikler de kullanılamıyor.

Elbette iPhone ve iPad’lerde olduğu gibi, Apple TV gibi bir ürünün de yapabilecekleri ve yetenekleri, jailbreak işleminden sonra artıyor.

Apple’ın ürettiği bir çok üründe benzeri bir sistemi görebiliyoruz. Özellikle iOS cihazlarında göreceli olarak kısıtlı bir sistem kuran, ve bu sistemi App Store ile genişleten Apple, aslında önemli ölçüde başarı sağlıyor desek yanlış olmaz.

Kurduğu sistem ile kullanıcılarına maksimum güvenlik, stabilite ve performans sunan Apple’ı pek çok kişi eleştirse de, jailbreak işleminin sancıları, güvenlik açıkları, stabilite ve performansa negatif etkileri ve problemleri sebebiyle, ciddi bir çoğunluğun jailbreak’i tercih etmediğini de belirtmemiz gerekiyor.

Kişisel olarak bu tip cihazlarla yoğun olarak haşır neşir olmama ve bilgime de güvenmeme rağmen, açıkçası iPhone’umu ve iPad’imi jailbreak etmekle uğraşmak bana çoğunlukla zaman kaybı olarak görünüyor.

Apple’ın yukarıdaki sebeplere ek olarak, bir de ekonomik yönden bu konuya önem verdiğini belirtmezsek eksik bilgi paylaşmış oluruz. Apple TV’de kullanılabilen şeylerin hemen hemen hepsi iTunes Store (henüz ülkemizde yok ne yazık ki) üzerinden satın alınmış ya da indirilmiş şeylerden oluşuyor. Dolayısıyla aslında satın alınmış pek çok içerik Mac, iPad, iPhone, iPod gibi cihazlarda kullanılabilmesinin yanında, bir de Apple TV üzerinden televizyonumuza aktarılabiliyor.
