Apple is rumored to be working on a game controller and it’s about time. A gamepad is one of the missing pieces from the Apple gaming experience.

Apple is rumored to be working on a first-party video game controller that’s likely to be compatible with all of its major hardware products, such as Apple TV, the iPad, and the iPhone. While a new gamepad from Apple is not something that’s essential, it is needed, and can’t come soon enough.

Apple is synonymous with the iPhone, but the company is hoping to change that and broaden its appeal. This is not just simply a matter of wanting to move beyond the iPhone, but more a case of the company understanding the real growth opportunities right now are outside the saturated smartphone market. As a result, Apple has expanded its hardware lineup to include audio and TV in recent years, as well as the services it offers, including into gaming with Apple Arcade.

Tipster, @L0vetodream recently stated that Apple is working on a new game controller and suggested that it will arrive either later this year or next year. The tipster does have a reasonable track record on these things, leading to the news becoming highly reported on within the media this week. No firm details were provided on what the controller will look like, if it will come with any notable features, or how much it might cost. Although it is likely it will be cross-platform compatible, meaning it will work with Apple’s phones, tablets, and Apple TV.

An Apple gamepad is needed, although it is not essential. For example, Apple already should have a game controller on the market, considering it has all of the rest of the setup in place. It not only provides the hardware with Apple TV, but also the ability to stream games online through Apple Arcade. This in itself makes the lack of an existing Apple games controller all the more perplexing. Regardless of whether it is a good controller or not, there will be many consumers who would prefer to have an official Apple product to marry with the rest of their setup. In fact, Apple TV is one of the more expensive set-top boxes for the living room and the remote that comes with it, is anything but useful. If the same device had been packaged with a controller, then it might suddenly be a much better and worthwhile purchase. With the hardware and the software already in place, an Apple gamepad shouldn’t be currently in development, it should already be here.
