The world is being asked to stay home right now, and for many of us, money might be tighter than usual. That creates quite a conundrum: How can we stay entertained on the cheap?

The good news is that you don’t have to do it cheaply — you can do it for free. Many streaming services are offering quality content free of charge these days, as long as you’re fine with watching an ad or two. As with paid content, some services are objectively better than others, and we’ve collected the best of the best.

Pluto TV

Supported devices: Apple TV, Roku devices, Amazon Fire TV and TV Stick, Google Chromecast, Android TV, iOS devices, Android devices.

Who it’s for: Those interested in Comedy Central content, children’s programming, food channels, nature, and travel content.

Pluto TV is a free TV streaming service that offers a couple of popular networks in addition to more specialized live and on-demand content. In all, the ad-supported platform has more than 250 channels filled with movies and TV shows. Or, in other words, it’s a hodgepodge of content you’re familiar with and content you’ve never heard of before. Since it’s free, it’s worth diving into.

Speaking of Pluto TV, if you own a Vizio SmartCast TV, you’ve already got Pluto TV, but it goes by the name WatchFree. That’s what Vizio calls its free streaming TV service, which is powered by Pluto TV. Vizio has also supplemented the 150-plus Pluto TV channels with an additional 30 free streaming channels that can be found in a new Free Channels row on the SmartCast home screen.

Crackle

Supported devices: Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Android devices, Apple TV, iOS devices, Chromecast, LG TV, Playstation 4, Roku, Samsung TV, Vizio TV, Xbox One.

Who it’s for: Those who aren’t afraid to dig through a few old and forgotten productions to find some gems.

Crackle operates in a similar fashion to Pluto TV, and to most free streaming services. You’ll get ads, but you’ll also get access to thousands of hours of free content. By browsing their library, it’s not hard to find some fun things to watch (the Ace Ventura movies are available to stream). But it’s almost more fun to find all the B-level movies featuring today’s A-list actors. Remember 1997’s The Devil’s Own? Neither do we, but it starred Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt.

Tubi TV

Supported devices: Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and TV Stick, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Chromecast, TiVo, Android TV, Xfinity X1, Cox Contour.

Who it’s for: Anyone hoping to stream episodes of Hell’s Kitchen or movies like Minority Report and Be Cool.

There isn’t any exclusive content on Tubi TV. But, since it’s free, that’s basically expected. What there is on Tubi TV is a wealth of older TV shows and movies. It’s not necessarily enough to make your primary streaming service, but it’s worth keeping it in the lineup whenever you’re…

Apple TV game developers can now force players to use a game controller if their title isn’t suitable for the Siri Remote. Until now, all titles have had to be compatible with the Siri Remote, which makes it difficult to play more complex games.

This requirement meant that games that needed various buttons for different actions had to assign them to different areas of the Siri Remote’s touchpad. Players then have to remember what each area is for, and try to ensure they hit it in the right spot.

As you can see in the photo below from TouchArcade, which shows the control system for Modern Combat 5 on tvOS, there are more than five different actions assigned to that tiny touchpad. This delivers a poor in-game experience.

As a result, tvOS games with control systems like these tend to get bad reviews, because they’re just not fun to play with the Siri Remote. But going forward, developers can force players to use a game controller with physical buttons instead.

“When designing a tvOS game, you may require the use of an MFi game controller, but where possible you should also support the Siri Remote,” Apple’s guidelines read, as highlighted in the tweet below.

That means they don’t have to make their games compatible with the Remote. If they’re just not suitable, they can eliminate it altogether for a greater experience. That means it might be time to invest in a controller if you haven’t already!

Oui oui vous l’avez bien lu, il n’est pas trop tard pour jailbreaker votre Apple TV 4 si vous avez raté le coche avec le dernier jailbreak LiberTV de tvOS 11 et 11.1 !

Mais comment on jailbreak une version plus ancienne alors qu’on a notre Apple TV à jour?

Et bien sachez que tvOS 10.2.2 est toujours signé par Apple ! Vous feriez bien de downgrader immédiatement afin de profiter du jailbreak tant qu’il est encore temps !

Pour ce qui est du jailbreak, cela n’a jamais été si simple mais certains pré-requis sont nécessaires pour mettre en place le jailbreak :

• Un ordinateur, macOS ou Windows
• Un câble USB vers USB-C
• Cydia Impactor : téléchargeable ci-dessous

Une fois tous ces pré-requis validés, rendez vous sur le site nito.tv et téléchargez l’IPA « greeng0blin » que vous devrez par la suite transférer sur l’Apple TV grâce à Cydia Impactor.

Pour vous rendre sur le site internet cliquez sur l’image ci-dessous !

Une fois l’application installée, rendez vous sur votre SpringBoard et lancez la nouvelle application apparue « greeng0blin ». Après avoir lancé l’application, cliquez sur « Jailbreak », et refaites cette étape aussi longtemps qu’il le faudra car cela ne marche pas du premier coup. Il m’a fallu plus de 15 essais pour parvenir à mes fins.

L’Apple TV redémarrera encore et encore, mais pas d’inquiétudes c’est normal. Si cela a bien fonctionné le bouton « Jailbreak » changera au profit de celui « respring », chose que vous ferez.

Après ça BOOM le jailbreak sera opérationnel et NitoTV sera alors présent sur votre SpringBoard !

NitoTV est l’alternative de Cydia mais pour l’Apple TV, vous y retrouverez les mêmes fonctionnalités. Je vous conseille d’installer tvOS Browser et MAME afin de pouvoir tirer pleinement parti de votre Apple TV.

Despite AT&T stating June 8 was the last day to snap up a free 32GB Apple TV 4K with three months of prepaid DirecTV Now service, the wireless giant has gone ahead and extended the deal. With plans as low as $35 per month, you can get the Apple TV 4K and three months of streaming content for just $105.

After multiple extensions of the best deal we’ve seen on the Apple TV 4K, AT&T has done it again by extending the promo offering new subscribers a free 32GB Apple TV 4K with three months of prepaid DirecTV Now service. According to AT&T, the minimum requirement was going to be upped to four months of prepaid service starting June 9. However, that has not come to fruition, giving shoppers a little extra time to snap up the deal. With plans starting at $35 per month, you can be out the door for as little as $105 plus tax today for both the Apple TV 4K and three months of programming.

Considering the 32 gigabyte Apple TV 4K retails for $179 alone, this deal is $75 cheaper than paying retail, without even factoring in the included programming. Back in November, DirecTV required four months of service to secure the free 32GB Apple TV 4K, making this offer $35 cheaper than the holiday deal (and the new minimum requirement starting tomorrow).

The streaming platform provides users with a variety of popular cable channels, including properties owned by AMC, Discovery, Disney, NBCUniversal and Viacom, among others. In November 2017, AT&T struck a deal with CBS to carry streaming and on-demand content from CBS News, CBS Sports Network, The CW, Pop and Showtime. AT&T also recently added a beta Cloud DVR feature to the plans, allowing users to record up to 20 hours of programming at no additional cost.

Along with the Apple TV, DirecTV Now supports a wide variety of internet-connected devices including Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, iPhone, iPad, Android hardware, Chromecast, and Google Cast-enabled LeEco ecotvs and VIZIO SmartCast Displays. Subscribers can also access programming through web browsers.

AT&T’s offer is available to new subscribers for a limited time. AT&T Unlimited Plus wireless subscribers may also be eligible for a $20 credit on DirecTV Now service after the first three months.

What is Apple TV?

It might surprise you to learn that Roku wasn’t the first mass-produced streaming device. Apple TV was. Launched in 2007, one year before Roku, the original Apple TV had 40GB, and streamed movies and shows bought off the iTunes store from your computer. In January 2008, it became a stand-alone streaming device like we use today, no longer needing a computer to stream. Over the years, Apple TV has set itself apart thanks to its deep ties to the Apple ecosystem, user-friendly design, and steep price.

How does Apple TV work?

Apple TV, like all streaming media centers, requires an internet connection to work. You connect the device to your TV through its HDMI port. When you first turn on your Apple TV, the system will automatically walk you through the setup process. You’ll enter your Apple ID, the same one you use on your iPhone or iPad, which automatically connects the device to your Apple account. (If you don’t have one, you’ll make one.)
