That silver-topped, hard-drive bearing, Tiger-running, heat-emanating Apple TV from yesteryear has been replaced by today’s $99 black, 8GB-of-flash-memory, iOS-powered, cool-as-a-cucumber Apple TV (second generation) ( ). Given the new Apple TV’s lower-price, more responsive performance, and Netflix support, it’s likely that owners of the original Apple TV are unplugging the things by the score and replacing them with the current model. But, when doing so, they’ve surely wondered what to do with the old one. We have some suggestions.

1. Keep using it

Just because you have a new Apple TV doesn’t mean you can’t continue to use the old one. iTunes 10 still supports the old dear and, unlike with the new Apple TV, you needn’t have a computer running iTunes to play the media in your iTunes library. Just sync the content you wish to enjoy to your old Apple TV and then quit iTunes or shut down your computer. The content on the Apple TV’s hard drive will play just as it always has.

Additionally, the original Apple TV lets you use the device with a TV or AV receiver’s Component inputs. If your second TV (the one not plugged into the newest Apple TV) lacks an HDMI port but does have Component inputs, you’re in business.

2. Upgrade it

If you intend to keep the old Apple TV because of its internal storage, you may wish to upgrade that storage, particularly if you have an original Apple TV with its 40GB drive. To do the job you must open the Apple TV, remove its hard drive, clone the contents of the original hard drive to a new hard drive, and then reassemble the Apple TV.

Senior Editor Dan Frakes wrote a step-by-step guide on upgrading you Apple TV’s hard drive that can help you through the process. And If the wealth of Terminal commands within those instructions puts you off, take a look at DynaFlash Tech’s AtvCloner, a free utility that allows you to image the original drive from your Apple TV (including its operating system and partitions) and clone it to a higher capacity internal PATA (parallel ATA) or external eSata drive.

If you’re not a do-it-yourselfer, OWC will upgrade your Apple TV for you. It offers both 250GB and 320GB hard drive upgrades. You can choose ground pickup and delivery or FedEx overnight pickup and delivery. Prices start at $160 for the 250GB hard drive/ground service.

3. Hack it

The original Apple TV focused almost exclusively on your iTunes library and the iTunes Store. And, for many people, that scope was too limited. With the help of a USB memory stick and one of a couple of utilities, your Apple TV can stream not only media from iTunes and the iTunes Store, but also content from a host of Internet-based sources—including Pandora, PBS, BBC, CNN, Onion News Network, NPR, Vimeo, CollegeHumor, TWiT TV, G4, and Shoutcast Radio.

I’ve seen multiple people in this subreddit reporting issues with repos not working properly. If you have this problem, it’s because an OVH datacenter in Strasbourg (France) has been destroyed by fire, the whole area has been shuttled down, making services unreachable. There is no ETA on when it will come back like tweakd (impacted by the accident) tweeted today.

The recent talks and rumors have started to spread regarding what the next Apple TV might have as far as new features, specifications, and when it might be released.

The latest rumor regarding the upcoming six generation Apple TV model has to do with the possible date release, new features, and specifications. Rumor has it some of the new features that might be included are: a gaming machine, a combined digital media player with Apple’s set-top box, and a platform for apps with the ability to stream content from iOS devices as well as from Mac computers to a TV.

Talk has it Apple could release the six generation in the September event of 2018, this may happen if minor changes are incurred,  other rumors are speculating Apple may debut the newer model much later in 2019 if more major features are to be added, such as AirPod Siri support, it seems it is possible to use Bluetooth headphones with the Apple TV. Face recognition could also be a future possibility on the Apple TV, another rumor states the Apple TV could have its own game controller.

As far as rumors on the specs, talk has it the Apple TV could add options of 128GB and 256GB models, this would come in handy for streaming and storing content in iCloud. The price should be expected to be similar to the fifth generation Apple TV  if minor changes occur, but if Apple makes some major changes on the Apple TV, expect to see an adjustment in cost.

The September Apple event has been and gone, aside from a trio of new iPhones – the XS, XS Max and Xr – and a new Apple Watch Series 4 – possibly including a new Macbook Air, there was scant mention of other new hardware.

There were no new iPads launched, although there’s still time for that to change later in the year, and no new Apple TV. That’s alright, though. The Apple TV isn’t a product that often gets an annual upgrade and the latest version – the 4K-enabled fifth-generation Apple TV – was released relatively recently, at 2017’s September launch event. 

Apple did, however, announce a release date for tvOS 12, the latest version of the Apple TV’s operating system and this will bring with it a couple of major new features: Dolby Atmos and single sign-on. The former is fairly self-explanatory, adding a feature that should bring greater audio expansiveness and “height” to setups with Atmos-enabled hardware.

The second is aimed at making initial setup even easier than it is already, allowing the Apple TV to sign itself in automatically to all your streaming services as soon as it’s recognised you’ve logged on to your home Wi-Fi network. This will require support from your ISP to work, however, so don’t expect it to work straight away.

Alas, anyone waiting for next-generation hardware will, however, most probably have to wait for another year. Here’s when it’s likely to be available and what it might look like:

Apple TV 6 release date: When can we buy it?

Aside from iPhones, which are as regular as clockwork, the release dates of many other Apple products are harder to predict. The Apple TV is similarly unpredictable: previous models were released in January 2007, September 2010, January 2013, October 2015 and September 2017.

We can make an educated guess though. Going by the previous two editions, the betting money would be on the next Apple TV being released in September 2019. That fits with the recent timeline – and by then Apple may have a worthy selection of upgrades and features to cram into a new model.

Apple TV 6 price: How much will it cost?

Again, we’ll have to look to the past for some ideas on this one. But even then, without a confirmed spec list, it’s a bit tougher to home in on a specific price. We can certainly predict a price range though.

The latest Apple TV available to buy right now is the fifth-gen version, which costs £179 for the 32GB version and £199 for the 64GB box. Barring some great leap forward in set-top box tech, it’s likely that the Apple TV 6 will remain in the same price range, even if UK-US exchange rates conspire to push the price a little higher than last year’s model.

However, the App Store is only available on the Apple TV 4K or HD models. The Apple TV version 3 and earlier are limited to pre-installed apps.

How to get to the App Store on an Apple TV

On Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, the App store should appear in its standard position on the top bar of the home screen. It is a blue rectangle with three white lines in the shape of an “A.”

The App store can be moved by holding the Selection button on your remote while hovering over the App Store icon. The app will begin to vibrate, allowing you to move it to wherever you wish on your Home screen.

When the App store icon is vibrating, hitting the play/pause button on your remote will also allow you to move it to the Utilities folder.

In the ultimate sign of how the once pretty icy relationship between Apple and Amazon has thawed, it’s been announced today that the Apple TV app is being made available from today on a wide range of Amazon Fire TV devices.

This is no limited roll out of the Apple TV app, either; it’s going to appear on multiple Fire TV devices in more than 60 countries around the world. Specifically it’s available from today to owners of Fire TV Stick 2nd Gen and Fire TV Stick 4K devices in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and India, as well as owners of Fire TV Basic Edition customers in more than 50 other countries including Australia, Austria, New Zealand, Brail, Ireland and Mexico. 

The Apple App has come to Fire TV Cube devices since I first published this story, too, and is expected soon on the third-gen (pendant design) Fire TV; the Toshiba and Insignia Fire TV Edition smart TVs; and the Nebula soundbar. 

The only Fire TV devices that are not compatible with the Apple TV app are the first and second generation Fire TVs, and the first-generation Fire TV Stick.

Apple TV App is now available on many Fire TV devices in more than 60 countries.

Apple has, of course, got a very vested interest these days in spreading its Apple TV app love, with the Apple TV+ service (which can be watched through the Apple TV app) set to launch in just a week’s time. But it’s still good to see the Fire TV/Apple TV App connection now formally up and running.

Naturally the Apple TV app will provide access to all of the Apple iTunes library of films and TV shows. However, while the app supports 4K and HDR10, it will not currently support Dolby Vision HDR or Dolby Atmos sound, even on Fire TV devices such as the Fire Stick 4K that can support both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos from other apps. Amazon tells me that it’s “working with Apple to add additional support for this type of content in the future.”  

To get the Apple TV app on your Fire TV, just search for ‘Apple TV’ using text input or an Alexa Voice Remote/paired Echo device, and add the app to your collection.

Apple Watch 6 review: What I like

• Blood Oxygen app: I’m happy to report both that I received 99% blood oxygen levels readings (above 95% is considered normal, although my father, a former EMT, says he wouldn’t want to see me below 98%), and that the Blood Oxygen app is pretty thorough. It offers a brief blood oxygen synopsis and walks users through taking on-demand readings.
• Brighter always-on display: Indoors, it’s obvious that the Apple Watch 6’s display is brighter than the Apple Watch 5’s, as advertised. Outside, in direct sunlight, the difference is less noticeable. However, when I looked back at some side-by-side images it seemed the Apple Watch 6’s screen in fact shined brighter.
• New watch faces and third-party complications: Apple launched all-new watch faces that will actually make you ditch Infographic. I’m a fan of the Typograph face’s bold design, although the Stripes, Memoji and Artist options are great for showing off your personality, too. The good ‘old modular faces are better than ever thanks to added support for third-party complications, though.
