Thanks to TidBITS readers who alerted us that Apple last week updated third-generation Apple TVs with Apple TV Software Update 7.6, which advertises itself only as providing “general performance and stability improvements.” Unfortunately, the opposite seems to be true.

Earlier in the year, third-generation Apple TVs had been having problems playing YouTube videos. Those problems may have been the result of the Apple TV Software Update 7.5, or they may have been related to changes at YouTube, but regardless, Google made a change that seemed to fix them.

Third-generation Apple TV users are now experiencing crashes when pausing YouTube videos, and others are having intermittent AirPlay problems that include freezing and audio-only over a blank screen. The only workarounds are to wait 90 seconds for the Apple TV to time out and reload the Home screen, or to restart the Apple TV either by pressing the Menu and Down buttons on the remote simultaneously or by power-cycling the unit. There are also problems with loading Apple TV+ shows promoted in the What to Watch area at the top of the Home screen, though they load fine when accessed from within the Apple TV app.

It’s apparently possible to downgrade a third-generation Apple TV, but it requires some potentially iffy software downloads and connecting the Apple TV to your Mac. Regardless of whether you want to color outside the lines with an unsupported downgrade, we recommend submitting feedback to Apple and calling Apple support to make sure the support reps are aware of the problem. Otherwise, it’s unlikely Apple will learn of these concerns.

Situations like this are frustrating. On the one hand, it’s great that Apple continues to update an obsolete product like the third-generation Apple TV that hasn’t been on the market for almost four years. But on the other hand, if you’re going to release an update to old hardware, Apple, make sure you get it right and pay attention afterward!

The jailbroken Apple TV 2 was once the most popular device for Kodi. It’s now outdated, and poses a huge security threat to your entire network. Jailbreaking the Apple TV 2 preinstalls OpenSSH and leaves the default SSH password as: alpine. This huge security flaw puts millions of Kodi users at risk of having their Kodi box used to: send spam, DDoS, distribute malware or even something as disgusting as child pornography!

While everyone’s running around talking about Russia, the smaller security threats are disregarded by most. We’re here to tell you that if you own a jailbroken Apple TV 2 box, there’s a 99.99% chance that you have a huge security threat sitting in the middle of your living room. Jailbreaks are known to open additional security flaws in devices, however this flaw is far more egregious than others.

What puts Jailbroken Apple TV 2 owners at imminent risk of being hacked is the fact that this specific jailbreak comes with OpenSSH installed by default. Even worse, almost no one changes their root password on these devices from the default: alpine. This means that if you have a jalbroken Apple TV 2 device connected to electricity in your home, there’s a huge chance that you might have already had your security compromised.

Once an Apple TV 2 is jailbroken, OpenSSH is what allows the user to login using command prompt (or nito Installer) in order to install Kodi as well as other Apple TV 2 compatible apps such as nitoTV. As soon as you jailbreak the device and connect it to the internet, you’re left with a mini Linux computer that’s wide open and can be used by anyone on the internet who stumbles upon your IP address.

Under normal circumstances, most people are aware of the need to set a strong password on their computer. However, in this circumstance, most users aren’t aware that their jailbroken Apple TV 2 is a computer that can be programmed for any purpose. Anyone who gains access to your insecured jailbroken Apple TV 2 device could run code to do things like send spam, DDoS, or even infiltrate your phone and personal computer.

It’s important to understand that your overall digital security is online as good as your weakest link. It is becoming increasingly popular for hackers to use internet connected devices as part of botnets. Botnets are basically masses of infected devices used for a collective purpose like spamming, DDoS attacking, or fraud. The only way to use Kodi on an ATV3 is to airplay it from say an iPhone or iPad, the setup of this makes the iPad/iphone become a touch remote for kodi while in airplay mode and this works fine, however…..

you have to have an iPad / iPhone with kodi installed, which means jailbroken or installed via a developer account and signed, then you need a version of IOS on this device that is comparable with the ATV airplay system as apple changed the protocol used for airplay in later versions of IOS which may not be compatible with the older IOS versions running on ATV3.

A lot to think about to be honest ATV2 and ATV1 are now too old and don’t support the latest versions of kodi since 14.2 and this was flakey on ATV2 sometimes, these platforms are no longer officially supported by kodi dev team so in all honestly your best bet is to go with the ATV4 if you want to stick with apple devices.

Their are however numerous alternatives available and a quick google search will bring up a few good cheap alternatives, Fire sticks, Pi’s, Cheap PC linked to tv via cdmi or vga,

i personally use a 27″ iMac in my man cave for kodi (every bloke needs a man cave, best room in the house) haha

Apple TV Plus has plenty shows and movies coming up, a lot of them featuring big-name stars. Take the Scorsese-directed Killers of the Flower Moon, for instance, a ‘large-scale Western’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

In terms of upcoming shows that are worth knowing about, here are a few highlights. The Shrink Next Door is based on the 2019 podcast of the same name, and it’ll star Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd. Foundation is a sci-fi series based on the books by Isaac Asimov, and starring Chernobyl’s Jared Harris and Lee Pace. Severance, directed and produced by Ben Stiller, is a dark workplace thriller featuring Adam Scott from Parks and Recreation.

Apple has been coy in the past about disclosing its sales of Apple TVs. Data has come out in bits and pieces. However, to gain insight into the prospects for an Apple HDTV, it seems timely to estimate how Apple has done with the Apple TV over the years.

When the first generation Apple TV shipped on January 8, 2007, it was met with enthusiasm by early adopters. Even so, it was rather large, ran hot, and there were some difficulties for some customers getting purchases reliably synced back to a Mac. Nevertheless, so it was a great first effort.

First Generation

The early estimates for the sales were probably optimistic. In October 2008, I used two different methods for estimating the total sales as of that date. In Apple’s press announcement from June 2008, there was the revelation that Apple was selling or renting 50,000 movies per day. With an additional assumptions, and a second method based on estimated retail store sales, I backed out an aggregate estimate of about 400,000 Apple TV’s sold in the first 19 months. Other estimates were much higher, but didn’t publish a methodology.

This amounts to an average rate of about 21K units per months for 19 months. It’s reasonable to assume that the initial enthusiasm tapered off, but was offset and supported by continued Apple marketing. 21K per month amounts to about 250,000 in calendar 2007.

Apple continued to be coy about sales over the next few years. In order to hit the 400,000 mark in 19 months, Apple must have sold another 250,000 in 2008.

2009 is murky. It’s reasonable to assume that Apple picked up some momentum, and the only reasonable thing to do is figure in some growth based on what we know from 2010’s number and back that into 2009. In the fiscal fourth quarter (July-Sep) of 2010, Apple sold 250,000 units, or 83K/month. On a linear backtrack to 2009, we get 52K/mo * 12 mo = 624K. That suggests iterating to a slightly higher sales per month in 2008, but that’s a 2nd order effect, and I’ll ignore it. (in fact, the whole process has iterative aspects.)

Second Generation

2010 is easier because on Sept 1, 2010, Apple introduced the 2nd generation model with significant improvements and numbers were more forthcoming. The new model could work on its own as a streaming device, and one didn’t have to own a PC or Mac to operate it. As a result, sales took off. Between Sep 1, 2010 and April 2011, Apple sold a million units. Assuming that sales of the original Apple TV had been rising in 2010 and were averaging 50-60K units month we get 60K * 6 in first 6 months + 250K in FYQ4 + 250K/month (2nd gen) * 4 remaining months = 1.6 million total units in CY2010.

Apple is used to dominating the market when it comes to phones, tablets and smartwatches. It’s a different story for media streaming devices, where the Apple TV goes up against popular offerings from Roku, Google, and Amazon.

If you’re an Apple fan, though, you’ll love what the company has done with the latest iteration of Apple TV ($149.99 at Amazon) . A new remote adds voice control with Siri, a touchpad, and an accelerometer and gyroscope for games. And this fall, there will be even more to watch once the Apple TV+ streaming service arrives.

Turn Anything into a Remote

You’ll need the remote that comes with the Apple TV during the setup process, but you’re not stuck with it after that. Turn your iPhone into a remote with the Apple TV Remote app for iOS. (For Android users, there are some apps not made by Apple on Google Play.)

You can also use a traditional third-party remote. On your Apple TV, navigate to Settings > General > Remotes > Learn Remote, where you can map your remote to work with the device.

Check Remote Battery Levels

Is your Apple TV remote dead or just in need of new batteries? Go to Settings > Remotes and Devices to view how much charge is left. Click Remote to see the actual percentage number.

Adjust Remote Sensitivity

The newest Apple TV remote uses a touchpad instead of directional buttons, but sometimes the surface can be a little too sensitive. If you find that it’s hard to make the selections you want because you’re always overshooting the apps, adjust how quickly it scrolls by going to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Touch Surface Tracking. The default setting is medium, but you can change it to fast or slow.
