You can unblock geo-locked content on Apple TV with a VPN. Once a year Apple rolls out a major update to tvOS, the operating system software that runs on the 2015 and later Apple TV models. These (free) full-version updates introduce new features, as well as tweaking the interface and fixing bugs. The latest of these is tvOS 14, and it launches today!

In between the yearly updates, smaller point updates roll out, such as (in the near future) tvOS 14.1. These tend to have fewer eye-catching features but they are important too, because they often include security fixes. It’s a good idea to keep your Apple TV up to date with the latest tvOS updates.

In this article we explain how to update tvOS on your Apple TV – which, as of today, means installing tvOS 14. (If you’d like to try out forthcoming versions of the software before they launch, you need to install a tvOS beta.) We also address any issues you might encounter with the update process.

Note that tvOS is only available on Apple TV 4K (2017) and Apple TV 4th generation (2015). Older Apple TVs have their own software, called simply Apple TV Software, but this isn’t updated very often. How to update tvOS on Apple TV (2015 or 2017 model)

If you have a newer Apple TV – one launched since 2015 – this is how to update its software.

1. Go to Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software
2. Click on Download and Install to download the update
3. Click on Update Now

The Apple TV may restart during the process, and you’ll be presented with a progress bar indicating the status of the update.

Once the Apple TV update has been completed, the Apple TV will restart running the most up-to-date software.

To turn on automatic updates go to Settings > System > Software Updates and turn on Automatically Update.

How to update the software on Apple TV (2012 and older)

If your Apple TV is one of the older models that pre-dates the App Store interface, this is how to update it.

1. Go to Settings > General > Update Software
2. If there’s an update, download it
3. Install the update

To turn on automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Update Software and turn on Update Automatically.

I have a jailbroken Apple TV 4 but it’s useless since you can’t really do anything with it. The only thing you can do with it right now is, stop automatic tvOS firmware updates, which is absolutely crazy when you think about it.

Here are the top 5 reasons why an Apple TV jailbreak is as good as useless.

1. Obsolete nitoTV 

This is by far the main reason why LiberTV tvOS jailbreak is useless. As you know, jailbreaking itself doesn’t amount to anything if there are no tweaks or packages you can install on your set-top box.

nitoTV, the Cydia alternative for Apple TV, is still not functional on tvOS 10 firmware months after LiberTV’s release.

Kevin Bradley, the developer of nitoTV, confirmed that he was working on a port for iOS 10. This announcement was made back in early May, almost 6 months earlier.

He hasn’t been very active in the jailbreak scene for quite a few months now. Moreover, his Twitter account has now gone private as well. The reason being those stupid “wen eta jailbreak” trolls.

I guess it’s now safe to assume there won’t be any future updates for nitoTV.

2. Sideloading

Just like sideloading is becoming increasingly popular with iPhone users, Apple TV users are also making the switch.

Sideloading already does what the majority of users jailbreak for – installing Kodi.

You can easily install Kodi on your set-top box using Cydia Impactor without running a jailbreak. Furthermore, you can purchase a developer account from Apple, which will cover all your devices for a year.

3. Better tvOS updates

Apple’s latest offering for Apple Tv users, tvOS 11 brings a lot of new features. It adds Bluetooth keyboard support and AirPods, automatic dark mode, home screen synchronization and much more.

Ironically, the benefits of installing the new tvOS update actually outweigh the advantages that a jailbreak brings.

4. Inactive jailbreak community

The iPhone jailbreak scene is really active and has a great unofficial developer community. However, the same can’t be said for Apple’s set-top box.

Before you can install Kodi on your second generation Apple TV, it will have to be jailbroken. This process is fairly straight forward and hasn’t changed in years now. Once you’ve jailbroken your Apple TV 2, you’ll be able to install apps like Kodi and nitoTV. Step 1: Unzip the Seas0nPass.zip file you just download, then launch the Seas0nPass application.

Step 2: Click on the Create IPSW button to begin the jailbreak process.

Step 3: When prompted, connect the Apple TV 2 device to your computer using a Micro-USB cable, without connecting the power cable, then point your silver Apple TV remote at your device and hold both the MENU button and PLAY/PAUSE button at the same time for seven seconds.

Please Note: If you don’t see the front light slowly flashing when the device is connected to your computer, plug in the power cable for a few seconds, then unplug the power cable and quickly reconnect the device to your computer.
